I would lean more towards a boxster gts 4.0 or 987 Spyder manual of course to fill the gap, but if you need 4 seats my choice out of modern 911s would be 991.2 you will get a nice T for your money but I wouldn’t discount a base or an S perhaps might be lucky to find a nice GTS but I would buy the lowest miles/owners youngest car for budget

Great package that the GT4 undoubtedly is, as previously discussed by many it's biggest problem is the strangled and detuned Carrera S non GT engine.

Total different cars - different characters and different implementations
Depends on what you want.
For one car to it all out of the 2 - Carrera T Manual with rear seats.
For the focused drive, track work and harder edge - GT4.
Depends if you prefer a 911 to a Cayman. The GT4 feels a smaller car on the road despite being identical 1978mm width mirror to mirror to the T. Both cars have different but equally endearing characteristics re handling etc for rapid road use.
Depends if you need rear seats.
Also depends whether you want n.a. or
'turbine.'
Finally depends whether you want essentially a track car or road car.
Both great packages at the money.
T will be rarer in the UK. More usable as a daily too. Although the GT4 is quite usable despite no lift.
And T perhaps a more authentic package having regard to the GT4s drawbacks...lack of proper high revving GT Porsche engine and inappropriate gearing.

Have put my money where my mouth is. My T is due to be delivered next month.
As an all round package, it works for me and has been built to my spec.
GT4 is lovely though and may suit other people’s lifestyles better.
Also is it me or is there an awful lot of GT4 ‘s for sale at minute, many seem to of been up for a while? Everywhere I look a bloody GT4 is for sale, keep tripping over them!
Are these actually changing hands in the quantities that we see for sale? Or they just rusting on the classifieds.....

Just to be clear..... you’re saying the T is a MORE authentic package than the GT4?

Yes. Truer to form.
For those wanting a proper GT engine the GT4 is lacking with its strangled and detuned Carrera S engine.
Having said this it is nevertheless a great package at the money. Almost as great as the 981 Spyder.

Typical number of GT4s for sale for a 3 year old GT Porsche.
Many are the wrong spec though.
‘Wrong spec’? According to who? Surely the correct spec is the one that suits the buyer of a particular car.

The T is marketed as a driver focused backed to basics..... actually it is a more expensive base carrera.... so a marketing exercise to sell during 991 run-out, off the back of the GT3 Touring… What is authentic about that?
Now, if it was like a T or Clubsport of old and authentic and true to that historical form… it would be even more stripped down..... not just 20KG that most people spec back in anyway and it would have been cheaper than the base carrera.
It’s an interesting package if you’re looking for a new 911, maybe unlocking the best that the base car has to offer, but authentic? To what..... please. The word you are looking for is cynical.
The GT4 was developed by Weissach- with bespoke hardware for the first ever Mid-engine car to come from that department. It ushered in a return to drivers cars for Porsche.. Gearing is tall… but not vastly different than the GTS or manual GT cars before it or even the 991.2 GT3 manual after it.. it’s old school but not old-fashioned.

It's easy to miss the point of the T.
The car equates to more than just a marketing exercise by Porsche and is a stand alone product entirely different to the GT3 T. Remember how the 997 GTS was ridiculed as a run out parts bin special? How wrong were the naysayers......the market still values cars over list £ even 7 years later!
The T is not and was never intended as a stripped out special....the current market for these type 911s would not accept that. What it does offer is subtle differences over a basic Carrera which add up to quite alot as a package.......such as thinner glass less sound insulation lower sport psm mechanical diff lock shorter gear ratios pse rear seat delete optional buckets and pccbs. And the all important rarity..in fact to be as rare as a gen 2 GT3.
Can't agree with your comments claiming the GT4 'ushered in a return to drivers cars for Porsche.' Presumably you are referring to the 'Manuel' gearbox.....PDK S on the GT3 does not instantly mean less driver involvement and I enjoy both gearboxes depending on which cars are being driven and what they are used for.
Great package that the GT4 undoubtedly is, as previously discussed by many it's biggest problem is the strangled and detuned Carrera S non GT engine.
And unfortunately for a car with the promised capabilities offered by the GT3s front suspension and a GT badge on the rear, that will always be the cars main Achilles heel.

A base model turbo 911 or a top of the range NA Cayman GT car.
GT4 no contest.
I would look at the GTS or the 911S before a T also, I don't get the T and the manual is the 7 speed, the brakes are small etc etc.

you cannot put the T up vs the 997 GTS
the GTS was the best non GT 911 could be at the time ie. the top model in the line up
GT4 is the best Cayman in the line up
etc etc
the T is a base model 911 with S sus ! it's a bit like the black ed run outs they did last time on the base models.
the T will not follow GTS prices of the 997 , as the S and GTS in the range are better cars, they will be like the black ed prices.

.
Haha 'bit' being the operative word.
The black edition runouts were purely cosmetic marketing exercises giving turbo wheels auto dim mirrors rain sensor cruise different steering wheel dynamic lights Bose heated seats and park!
Oh yes, and black paint lol!
Hardly ground breaking improved 911 driving involvement.
GT4 for me.
Henry Catchpole's review of the T - posted on Carfection's YT channel yesterday - seemed to summarise the car accurately.
He makes what I think is a very fair point at the end, saying that what Porsche should have done is not to have allowed the removed components to be added again and as a result kept the price of the car at £75k - the theory being that they couldn't offer the car at £75k whilst allowing the removed parts to be added as "no cost options" as they're worth about £10k as options over a base Carrera.
In my opinion, anyone who decides to add the removed components back into the car are clearly more interested in residuals than anything else, which is of course fine as a) it's a Porsche and b) it's their money, however it does seem a bit perverse.

How is a T any different ? it just has the S sus standard Hardly ground breaking improved 911 driving involvement and still that stupid 7 speed box.
if it has the S brakes and the GT3 6 speed , then yes it would be like a Cayman R sort of thing , but it's a base model 911 with S sus !!!
let me guess you have bought one, you must have to be quoting how rare they will be over s GT4 lol

My basic 'manuel' car with T pack as the only option (pcm too) arrives in a couple of weeks. As you know I have a GT4 too so no bias here.
When your GT3 arrives you will be able to appreciate the benefits of 4ws(which you previously derided btw)...an option available on the T for those who may want it.....unavailable on the S. Ditto ceramics. Ditto buckets and various other options.
As for residuals, it's all about the production numbers.

I am not sure a drivers car needs RWS, I have been in a RWS car but too long ago to remember it, do we need it in a drivers car ? and you can spec it on the S if you wish. I do deride it, but in the GT3 you have to have it and it's just another aid to help one drive it faster.
I have decided to keep my R and mod it a bit, it has plenty of power, the best steering on any Porsche in the last 10 years imo and it's mid engine and 2 seats, for me it's the perfect driving tool. any thing newer is less driver focused, I was hoping for more out of the GT4 and the gearing ruined it, the Spyder is the same, the gearing saps the car of any life, the brakes are over servoed and the steering is average. The R and the org Spyder win hands down as drivers cars over the GT4 and 981 Spyder. The GT4 comes into it's own as a track GT entry level Porsche and for that it's great but then one needs to mod it to track it and people don't like to touch them. My 981 Spyders up for sale this week, it's good to tick a box to own it, but it's not good enough to keep, or change any of my other cars for it at the price it is. I did like it, I would want to mod it, a 435 HOT rod Spyder would be cool, and over come the gearing a bit, it also would work well on 19" wheels to drop the ratio a bit also. Be a nice project. the biggest thing I dislike about the 981 was the exhaust, which is what people like the most, it's farty thing, the cars too quite PSE off and it just farts PSE on, the GT4 had the sounds nailed imo.
Also as you like rare there are only 100 R's in manual and 100 987.2 Spyder in manual in the UK so a rare thing, owners have a secret handshake you know ;-)
Again we come back to the 997 GTS which really is the last of the true interactive cars in the 911 range and hence the price as they are sort after.
Been looking for one my self but I am fussy on spec, it has to be an Alcantara, manual car in white and none ever come up.
My GT3 will be a lifestyle car, I guess it's way too fast for the road, time will tell, I'll give a honest review of it next month.

the T is a base 911 with -20kg on a 1500kg car, or 5kg if you spec the seats and nav. the perception of it being special or more than it's sum of parts is an illusion, the reality is that a well specced base 911 is a decent car in itself, things like the door handles, badging etc all contribute to this illusion imo
the gt4 is a much more special car and with a high spec 't' being ~£110k, the gt4 will hold its value better too
I've sold a GT4 to buy a T. Ultimately for the rear seats and usability - the front height or overhang of the 4 can be problematic as a daily.
I'm under no illusions that the GT car in extreme is the better driving car, for road driving most of the time I can't see there being alot in it.
If image matters, I much prefer that of the T, I like the pure classic narrow bodied clean look of the T, the boy racer GT4 look didn't sit that well with me.
Agreed a GT4 touring would be the job- again only two seats though!
911's are always over priced compared to a Cayman, we pay for the name. On either model the GT car at list is always a relative bargain.
IMHO GT4 no question. It is proper motorsport product. Just puhsed a Clubsport again for two days in sunny Ascari (have driven it in VLN races at the Ring too) and it is just an amazing piece of kit.
I know, the race version is very different from the roadgoing car but if the race car is anything to go by, I would not spend a second thought about a T if I had the option (and I quite like the idea of the T).
The Clubsport It's a proper race car with the full fat GT3 front-end (and lovely unservoed brakes), The enginge works well on track too - did around 550 km the first day alone and even on a rather tight and technical circuit like Ascari it never missed a beat.
A Cayman might not be to everybody's taste and some people may just prefer a 911 full stop. As a sports car the GT4 is just spectacular though

Keep talking up Manual 997 GTS prices please! When the T was launched I did compare it to my 997 GTS...1425kg (not 100% sure that's accurate but that's the number I found) and 408 BHP vs 365 BHP and 1425 kg for the T.
So it is a decent comparison but I think the manual 997 GTS is sort after for a reason. Mine's Silver with the manual box (factory fitted SSK) and the alcantara and full leather. And no I am not selling but I think at £70k to £75k for a manual it's pretty fully priced.

Never ceases to amaze me what people pay for these. Great car though especially with the hydraulic steering and 2wd but way overpriced imo.
Mines PDK with full leather...no Alcantara in sight.
£95k new, £63k in 2012 and £75k in 2018.
You need to try and drive both as there are T’s in dealers.... They are a different car but both have lots of positives .... And depends what you want.....
As a T owner I can tell you that the lack of sound deadening, and all the changes makes a massive difference and the whole package is more than the sum of its parts.... I love it and it’s a 911....whatever you think of the 911 it is Porsche and Porsche is 911.

my view on the T: lose 3/4 of a stone in weight & buy a bogo 991.2 Carrera, save £8k!!
you cannot buy a base 911 atm, the 911T was an end of run to sell the base engine they have left, but then the S is still the better car imo as you get the extra BHP, but really you still go for the GTS.
In fact, why stop at the GTS?
Try the turbo, but then, many say the turbo S is better still.
Then there is the GT3 with or without wing but others will have to hold out for the GT3RS. In fact, that's a bit soft too these days, what you really want is a GT2RS.
I've heard that they are a bit overrated though, the smart money goes on a Cup car now.
Then again, after I win the Carrera Cup, I am going into Formula 1 and the Mercedes-Benz F1 W07 seems to be the weapon of choice there...
Sorry David, couldn't resist.

Not sure they're over priced with the manual gearbox because it sits so well as an overall package with the hydraulic steering, 2wd and naturally aspirated engine.

lol I said GTS due to the 2WD option over the 4WD turbo :-) every thing else is PDK so not for the same buyer.
Mine is up to 10500 miles now and is 19 months old.
Still very happy.
It’s a fabulous modern all rounder but still has a manual gearbox and is a bit noisy so you can’t help but interact with it.
I spent a couple of hours in a 991.2 Carrera at the PEC a couple of months ago and on a back to back comparison, the subtle changes to the T certainly add up to sharpen the driving experience.
Last ever narrow bodied 911? I suspect time will be kind to the T.

I wasn’t talking about values - time will be
kind to the T on the basis of it being an end of an era type car.
Owners that I know still seem very happy with them.
Sold mine over the summer as new car arriving.
Mine was 'manuel' basic spec comfort seats T pack nav lightweight glass DAB.
Great car and very reminiscent of 997.2 C2S in most respects. Good daily weakest point probably vague gearbox action in upper ratios.
As predicted held its value relatively well mine sold in a week for just under list (OPC) 2k miles 18 plate, lots of interest. Appears the higher specced higher priced particularly PDK cars struggle and these show the greatest depreciation as a result. RWS cars probably not worth the extra.
Guaranteed future classic imo especially as last of the narrow bodied Carreras and low build numbers. Makes the 997 GTS look ridiculously overpriced.
But keep the spec simple and don't bother with needless weight like PDK and sunroof. The ethos of the car is lightweight so the 'manuel' fairly basic spec (incl T pack) cars will be the unicorns in years to come.
Ceramic braked cars weren't worth the huge cost extra cost new relative to basic price of the car imo and it appears like the GT4/Spyder the market doesn't attach much value to ceramics on the T either so if you want them for less unsprung weight benefits they are a bargain but bear in mind bigger future maintenance costs if the cars a keeper.

Thread resurrection - wondered how the guys who were buying Carrera Ts had got on and what the cars like to live with as a daily please?
Perfect daily car despite mine having the LWB's which for me are the most comfortable seats ever. I couldn't care less about values as I bought mine new to keep. It's such a shame Porsche ditched the narrow body as it's the perfect size for B roads and parking etc. T really comes to life on a twisty road and there lies the downside as journey's do tend to take longer now!
Good road car. Shorter gearing than the GT4 make it more driveable = more fun.
As usual depreciation was mentioned, most cars do, particularly at the minute. I think it'll find a level and stay around it soon.
There's actually very few manuals for sale.
The only car that'd tempt me, would be the as yet hypothetical 992 T with the NA 4 litre!
Agree the gearbox ratios are better than the GT4 and 7th on the T is great for cruising and economy which is dire on the 6 speed GT4.
But gear ratios aside, the GT4 gearbox is a delight to use unlike the T and probably even beats the 991.2 GT3 as one of Porsches best imo.
Clutch on the T is too light as is the current trend whereas the 981 GT4 is perfectly weighted.
Agreed the GT4 gearbox is best.
I was commenting on the jist of the poster posing their question regards daily driving.
For daily traffic etc the GT4 clutch is a tad heavy, weekend use it's fine.

5kg lighter in the majority of cases, it's daft
the T ethos isn't actually lightweight, look at the cayman t and boxster t - they are around 500grams lighter than a standard car

Im thinking of getting my first Porsche..
I have around 70k
Boxster GTS 4.0
Cayman GTS 4.0
981 GT4
991.1/.2 GTS
991.2 Carrera T
Most taken with the T as I have small kids, fancy a manual, and they seem to be getting appreciated more and more.
Interesting looking back at this thread, seems values have held well. A 991 GTS is pretty much same price as a Carrera T as far as I can see.
What do you all reckon?

An extra 5k should get you into a 991.1 turbo S, but that is a PDK.
I looked at a few of those, having come from a 981GT4. Top picks for me of them were a 991.1GTS and a Cayman 4.0 GTS. The latter fell off as too similar to what I was coming from, and I don’t like the front end that much. The former I was very keen on esp with an aerokit but couldn’t find one I liked. Then I stumbled across a 991.1 turbo S; thought it’d be boring and a bit rattly (had a 996TT years ago) but have found it to be the most complete sports car imaginable.

can you not get a 992.1 T for 70K?
Cheapest one in the Porsche network is £93,500.
I don’t think there’s a bad car on that list at that budget, all bring something good to the table.

If you're
actually
going to put your children in it, then the Box/Cay get put aside.
After that I'd want N/A, and pre-exhaust filter stuff... is that up to 2016?
Any 911 pre-2016 then. If the colour, wheels and interior spec aligned I wouldn't mind what gearbox it had, or what letters came after "911"
If pushed... a 991.1 GTS with the wheels re-painted to not be black.

Yeh I agree, it’s like picking something from an excellent ramen, really depends what you fancy!
I’ve never owned a Porsche and I’d really like to do the 911 thing and something really appeals about the T.

Yeh thought about a Turbo S, would make a lot of sense and the all year running would be handy. I have access to boring cars so I was leaning to more purist stuff, but something special about Turbo S! I have a GR Yaris and now I’m used to the 4x4 it’s a fantastic experience, just different from RWD cars. I’m sure I’d enjoy the Turbo

Yeh that would be top drawer, touch out of budget I’d ideally like to keep under 70 but there is a man maths argument that it would hold very strong so actually save me money (!!)

I suspect the £93,500 T is my old car.

I have a GR Yaris too... It's a bonkers little thing. I'm hoping to add a 911 alongside it but budget creep is making me consider the possibility of moving it on to facilitate the purchase - a decision I am sure I would come to regret..!!

Look at the 981 alternative... less money
but
limited production numbers so potentially less affected by depreciation... and its only available as the manual....
I'm not ever selling mine...
Porsche really do offer a sports car for everyone...
hard top, soft top, RWD/AWD, auto/man, NA/Fi, 2 seats or more, low ride height or high, road and/or track...
I was going to suggest something you could use all the time but the fact you have boring cars to use as daily s then it needs to be more special.
I also have a GR Yaris which I use daily which I would have suggested as a one car does all.
So you need something else fun well if you don t do track days then I would discount a GT product a 718 cayman gts 4.0 ticks the coupe box.

Should also add if going down the GT route then a 981Gt4 is a cracking car and long term will hold its value better than 718 version, lower build numbers and no GPF

But they don t, I really wanted to buy another Porsche and I considered all the options, a 911 and a Cayman , which are very practical in many ways but not in others so I considered a Macan but too big for my purposes so decided only a GR Yaris ticked the boxes for me as a daily. I didn t want a second or third car I wanted something I could use every day and was fun. Those who buy cars to do less than a couple of K a year in don t ever really get to know and enjoy the car. When I first got the GR I didn t like it and couldn t see what all the fuss was about but has I have been putting on the mileage the car is loosening up as the engine was really tight up to 600 miles and now having done nearly 2k in 2 months am I really getting to know and enjoy the car and for me I am getting all the fun of anything costing 2/3x as much with the practicality and it s a bit stealth in grey and most of the public think it s only a Yaris so therefore doesn t attract the wrong type of attention.
So if only Porsche would build some kind of hot hatch like say the LBX Morizo ..

You are pretty bang on I think - the 4.0 with the Spanish waiter feels like a sweet package.
I have a Caterham and with small kiddies im not doing big euro drives, I just want something I can enjoy locally. 4.0GTS - may as well have Boxster, if coupe, may as well get a Carrera T. I think a 911 will feel special regardless of how fast you drive it.

Interesting you say that you didn’t like it initially, I was exactly the same, I couldn’t understand all the plaudits and accolades, it took me 2k miles to get it sussed and a proper drive on a scabby B road to click with the car. I’m 5k miles in and I love it - I’d have to sell it to make way for the Porsche - but it’s going to be hard to part with. Incredible cars!

My last Porsche was a 981 GT4 owing the GR doesn’t make me miss a Porsche when I have a car I can use all the time but if I was to run a Porsche along side it would have to be a 987 Spyder which I owned before the Gt4.
Going back to the GR I think most Porsches would have a hard time down a back road against the GR the chassis is insane, still don’t like the engine noise after a flat 6 that’s why you need a pre 2018 Porsche without the exhaust note strangled GPF
