Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Before it cured it looked much too shiny, but I'm very happy now that it's dried completely.
I'm in the process of refurbing my gear knob, I've dismantled it successfully but now trying to figure out where to source some silver paint for it that will match the rest of the car.
It should be a glossy one, ideally one with UV protection that does not require a clearcoat on top of it. The car had the extended leather option, meaning the interior is colour coded as "all black" which does not help at all in finding the proper shade of grey.
Any ideas?
Thanks, but what I'm looking for is a colour that's a "Standard Colour" in the paint trade, so I can get a can mixed. This would mean a British Standard, RAL, Pantone, etc. colour code. I might have to resort to putting together some sort of setup that would allow me to accurately scan the colour from a photo...
I bought a small sample pot of Porsche Arctic silver not that long ago. When i get home i'll check the colour codes and post them up for you later.
Looks very much like the colour you have there.
Thanks gents, arctic silver brings up touch up paints for the exterior of well, Arctic Silver cars...
Could it be that it is literally the same colour on the outside and the inside?
Because if so I can get something like this

. The reason I'm so interested in a perfect colour match is it would allow me to touch up my handbrake and door handle as well.
Not sure of this will help, or if they will ship to you, but I've had very good results with the Color Bond products.

In the end I went with Porsche Arctic Silver mixed/matched from Scooby's Paint (
https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/giftplaquesuk
). Plastic primer + paint set me back £22. I picked them because they do a direct shine aerosol so you don't need an extra coat of clear.
Did 2 coats each of plastic primer and paint. Before it cured it looked much too shiny, but I'm very happy now that it's dried completely.
I probably won't bother to hold it next to the door handles to see the colour match, because a) in my cab those might be faded compared to new b) if there's a difference I don't want to really know about it
But here's a picture of where I taped the shift trim base to support it while painting. Above horizontal line Scooby's Paint, below OEM. With the caveat that's a only a thin layer of OEM paint with no clear as it's a non visible part.
Just to close this chapter, I can confirm the match is not good. It might not be visible in the photos above but the arctic silver has metallic flakes in it, which the original silver paint on the interior trim does not have. The shade is also lighter than the OEM colour.
Having said that, I very much like it on the shifter, and I'll take freshly-painted-and-a-shade-off over faded/scratched but OEM any day.
I'd fancy the gear lever is Arctic Silver, 92U. All gear knobs are just listed as leather colour/silver in the parts manual and unless your console is a different silver (details below) then a repaint in that original colour will not look at all out of place. Easy to get an aerosol of any of these colour for about £15 and some gloss clear lacquer is required too. From 2003 the silver on the gear knob is listed as Sport Silver V03.
Silver interiors for the console etc are Arctic Silver (IXJB build code) up to to 2001, GT Silver (IXME) up to 2002 and Polar Silver (a standard pallet option to match body colour), as well as from 2003 Sport Silver. Arctic Silver is paint code 92U, GT Silver is M7Z, Polar Silver 92M.
I'm happy with the result I achieved and I didn't need extra clear on top, but my car is 2002 and not arctic silver. Perhaps it's Polar like you say.
At the end of the day no can matched to these colours will be 100%, as they are exterior
metallic
colours so cans will come with shiny flakes (which the interior does not have). Maybe if one wants it to be spot on a seller could accommodate and not put the flakes in the mixture but I'm not sure of the feasibility (technical or financial) of this.
I found this if it helps.. My car is a November 2002 in Polar silver.. I have the small Alu look pack so the dial surround is in silver not the exterior colour.
4 characters, yes on vehicle identification labels relating to exterior paint, however they all start with L and the last three characters are the common shorthand that is used in Porsche part numbers suffixes in the part catalogue for painted parts.
Technically possible to eliminate the flakes, as for cost premium, who knows.
