It had to be non-aero (just personal preference, I love the clean lines of the original 996 design and find it to be the prettiest 911).

To put it into perspective, I could have chosen from what must have been 20+ examples of the limited production run 40 Jahre, several examples of the limited run Millennium Edition and dozens of aero-kitted cars during time that I was on the lookout for a single base spec red, turquoise or yellow C2 coming to market.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

TLDR – I bought a red car and love it. Picked up my new-to-me 98 996 C2 at the weekend. I’d been on the lookout for a couple of years for a 996 that would be replacing my E46 M3 CS as my fun weekend car. Unfortunately for me I wanted a spec that doesn’t come up often. Must haves: Colour had to be Guards Red, Ocean Jade or Speed Yellow, in that order of preference. Having these as the only three colours I would consider already meant that the car I was looking for was extremely rare – it appears all the dentists and doctors of the late 90’s wanted silver/black/blue etc when ordering their 911. It had to be non-aero (just personal preference, I love the clean lines of the original 996 design and find it to be the prettiest 911). Further must-haves were: early cable throttle, manual, coupe. My nice-to-have’s list included non-sunroof, 014 sport’s package, and ULEZ/CAZ compliance… To put it into perspective, I could have chosen from what must have been 20+ examples of the limited production run 40 Jahre, several examples of the limited run Millennium Edition and dozens of aero-kitted cars during time that I was on the lookout for a single base spec red, turquoise or yellow C2 coming to market. Finally this one popped up at Philip Raby https://philipraby.co.uk/product/porsche-996-carrera-13 it had all of my must haves so I was willing to give some leeway in terms of things that might need addressing, but I was proceeding with caution as Phil had deemed it one they could not offer with warranty and so was facilitating a private sale on the seller’s behalf. It had done 119K miles, had 8 previous owners and then there was the missing service book and history prior to 2015... But the rocking horse poop rarity of its spec meant I had to go and at least view it. Upon viewing, my concern at the missing history was eased when I saw all the paperwork from 2015 onwards, with circa £22K worth of servicing and maintenance from well-regarded marque specialists with all major areas of concern being addressed. Additionally the seller had addressed some corrosion on the underside and had subjected the car to a full respray – it wasn’t an open cheque book restoration but was a huge amount of work and expenditure to bring the car to a really good standard. With hindsight, Phil said he may have been overly cautious with the listing, but I was happy with the way the car had been described and its overall condition. There are some nice roads around Bosham so the test drive was an enjoyable one. The engine was smooth when idling and pulled hard right through the rev range, the car felt tight with a recent M030 suspension renewal and geo being obvious. It was exactly the drive I’d hoped that a well-sorted early C2 would provide. I was sold on the car but wanted a more critical appraisal so I had Nick Giles carry out a PPI. Nick comes with a great reputation, he’s been recommended on this forum several times and the dealer selling my M3 also recommended him. I asked Nick to pay particular attention to the corrosion repairs and paint, he went through the car in detail and gave me a detailed report. It was warts-and-all, but all the minor points raised were exactly that. Nick tests good ones and bad ones, but this specific example he said was one of the very best in terms of how it drives, ultimately he said he’d happily own it. Boom – sold! So here I am, happy to have finally found the 911 I wanted. There are a few things I’ll address over time, the first of which are the wheels. It’s been fitted with BBS Sport Designs which I really do like the look of against the guards red body, but they need a refurb. I’m undecided whether to keep those or source a set of the car’s original hollow spokes to bring it back to its factory original look. Once I’ve got the new log-book I’ll set about trying to get the car registered as ULEZ compliant. I’m just outside the ULEZ zone so I’m hopeful the CoC will come through with a favourable NOx figure. There’s some really helpful guidance on this forum regarding the ULEZ/CAZ process. Are there any other non-aero GR 996.1 C2 owners on here? Searching forums, Google, YouTube etc makes me wonder exactly how rare this spec is, because I can’t find any others in the UK. A couple in the US/Canada, but that’s it. Anyway, happy to finally be in the club and will share my 996 experiences on this forum.

POST 3Original post

Congrats, i was only looking at this very car this morning . Phil Raby sold my C4 twice many years ago and he seems a good guy to deal with. Enjoy and get some pics up asap. If you are looking to sort the wheels, check out PXWheels in Blackpool and take a look at some of my pics for his work. All the best. Si.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

8 days in and and managed to get along to a couple of meets already. Went to Fairmile on Wednesday thinking I was going to get lot's of pics but ended up just chatting with lots of fellow owners instead, a really nice mix of people and Porches. Heard a gundo hacked 996 in the metal for the first time - wonderful sound for the pounds so think I'll put that on my list of things to do... And went along to the Petrol Heads monthly cars and coffee at Runneymede this morning. A real eclectic mix of cars there including some air cooled 911's and lovely 986. Again, too much chatting and not enough snapping by me. Lot's of love for the 996 received from owners of everyrhing from fast ford's and mk1 Golf's to Astons and American muscle - and rightly so!
