I kept to the higher octane fuels (mainly Shell) for the first year but have been running on normal unleaded for the last 2.

Suggestion

I've seen over 30mpg on a long run though I do best when traffic is restricted eg M42 or M25 (or just damned busy).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A friend with a C4S (996) claims to have achieved 32.4 mpg on a run from the Midlands down to London at around 80mph this morning. This doesn't sound right to me, but any inside information from you guys could determine the outcome of any possible wager that emerges! Surely there is some fault in the fuel guage/computer system, possibly linked to the fuel tank arrangement in 4 wheel drive variants or even RHD cars?

POST 2Original post

No way Jose!! I couldn't get much more than that on my old 2.7 Boxster driving it like Miss Daisy. Anyway, why is he so proud about what he's done? When I first got a car with a computer (early 90's Golf GTI) I was on a never ending quest to max out the average speed and reduce the fuel consumption. All very entertaining when you're trying to maintain your "59.8 mph" average in a multi story....

POST 3Original post

i went up to yorkshire last weekend and got about 26 ish

POST 4Original post

[ ] But be careful..you will be upsetting people with such reckless behaviour.

POST 5Original post

Is it all down hill from the Midlands to London?[ ]

POST 6Original post

I'd say that possible with a following wind. I've seen over 30mpg on a long run though I do best when traffic is restricted eg M42 or M25 (or just damned busy).

POST 7Original post

I don't think I've ever seen better than 22.x MPG...mostly I struggle to get my C4S to return better than 18.x MPG...that's a mix of dual carridgeway and backroad stuff.

POST 8Original post

With my C2 (so a bit less weight) I get about 18 round town and 28-30 on a long steady run. I did a day out with Bernard Aubry the other week and the whole trip was about 500 miles. I averaged 27.6 mpg (including a stint at Chobham).

POST 9Original post

I managed 32 once in my old C4S. Due to heavy traffic and dodgy weather, I just cruised at 70 on the motorway for 100 miles or so and got to 32. Similar sort of approach will get 27 out of the TT. Mostly you get quite a bit less than that though.

POST 10Original post

I actually find mine more economical doing 80/85 as opposed to 70/75 I've notice this on a few runs

POST 11Original post

Bizarrely, I find mine more economical lapping the Nurburgring, that in everyday driving... 18.9 MPG flat out round the 'ring vs 18.6 MPG average everyday at the moment... Guess which is the more enjoyable?

POST 12Original post

My last 996 (C2 Man) averaged 25.6 mpg during its life with me (according to the computer). This would suggest that it would be possible to squeeze 30mpg+ out of it under the right conditions.

POST 13Original post

I got a 2003 C4S and average 31.4mpg door-to-door Shropshire to West London with mix of fast country roads, single carriageways, motorway and a suburban bit at the London end. 127.5 miles one way takes about 2hrs 20 mins. If I don't reset for a number of weeks average is 26.7mpg on a good mix of urban and extra urban mileage. I've kept the aircon off for the last 12 months and reckon this improves the consumption by 3mpg!! Having done 95,000 miles since I bougt the car in July 2003, I hate to think how many gallons of fuel I've been through. I kept to the higher octane fuels (mainly Shell) for the first year but have been running on normal unleaded for the last 2. Seems happy enough on this. Might be interesting to compar the map on standard and higher octane fuels

POST 14Original post

Hmm...all this talk of 25MPG+...perhaps I need to source some lighter shoes..
