Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
- Control arms (Don't need to be done as preventative maintenance, but likely the rubber bushes will be well on their way out)
Leading evidence: 'rubber bushes will be well' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rubber bushes will be well' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean water drains in the car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Oh and in case it wasn't obvious - clean all the water drains in the car!

Honestly, the cars are at an age where anything that has not been replaced could go at any moment.

Not expensive to replace bad ones either, but could avoid you dumping your coolant everywhere.

Bonnet gas struts - it might sound trivial, but I'm a big proponent of replacing these if they're worn.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Having my clutch pipe fail due to corrosion on my 98 C2 996, and having seen Uncle Monty's excellent preventative steps on his, I was thinking what the most likely weak points are going to be on a 25-ish year old car that I should also be looking at?
Once you get to that age, with who knows what work done in that time, it can be difficult to say. However, I'd be looking at the following (in no particular order):
Brake lines - these are often rusted badly at this age. Obviously safety critical!
Coolant hoses - easy to check if you can get the car up. Not expensive to replace bad ones either, but could avoid you dumping your coolant everywhere.
Suspension - lots that can be done here, and potentially expensive, but can transform the handling of your car if it's never been done.
Bonnet gas struts - it might sound trivial, but I'm a big proponent of replacing these if they're worn. They're not expensive, they're an easy DIY and it can make using the bonnet/engine cover much more pleasant, and crucially, safer. Having the bonnet fall on your head hurts!
This is interesting, when you look at air cooled cars there’s tons of info and support out there because owners / specialists have been maintaining them for decades.
It feels to me like the 996 has started down that path, as more people get into them, like us, the more knowledge and resources will build for keeping this generation of 911 alive.
There’s some really great people on this forum who’ve already started doing exactly that.
Honestly, the cars are at an age where anything that has not been replaced could go at any moment. I just had to garage mine for 2 weeks for a failed window regulator waiting on the new part to arrive.
You could always take the car to a specialist for an assessment to check what they think will be needed to be done in the future, but common points will be:
- Brake lines
- Coolant hoses
- Radiators / AC Condensers
- Gearbox and diff seals
- Control arms (Don't need to be done as preventative maintenance, but likely the rubber bushes will be well on their way out)
- CV-boots
