Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Full disclosure I ended up replacing my cats with Soul Performance sports cats several months later.
Leading evidence: 'Replace cats' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean things out' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion · Original poster
I probably should have replaced all 4 at the same time.

Suggestion
The MAF was a constant that I had to replace anyways so I did.

CEL never returned but my mechanic recommended replacing the cats due to a rattle sound.

I've been told by the people at "Tech Notes" in Excellence Magazine that in their experience, the only reliable way to keep the CEL light off is to use only Porsche Cats.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After an all day drive last Saturday, 250 miles or so, the CEL came back on.
I purchased my 2002 Carrera Cabriolet back in August from a private party. I think the car was a little maintenance neglected and I am busy bringing it back to my **** standards. It has 47k miles. I like to do all the work I can do on the car because I like to same some money and more importantly, I know the job is done right (usually). Shortly after I bought the car, the CEL came on and I had an indy scope the OBDII. It was the post CAT O2 sensor(s). Easy fix I figured. After a couple busted knuckles and burnt fingers, the new sensors are fitted and the CEL light is out. After an all day drive last Saturday, 250 miles or so, the CEL came back on. Ugh. In the meantime I purchased a iCarsoft POR V1.0 code reader. Plugged it in when I got home, and once again, it is the post CAT O2 sensors. Says they are "aging". WTF? They have less than 500 likes on them. Could there be something else making the DME think it's the O2 sensor? Anybody else have this issue? Unfortunately, I did not write down the codes before I cleared them. Now, I'm just waiting for the CEL to shine again...
Full disclosure I ended up replacing my cats with Soul Performance sports cats several months later. Now get a glorious sound at low rpm and even more glorious once the factory sports exhaust kicks in. CEL never returned but my mechanic recommended replacing the cats due to a rattle sound.
Ever think the sensors are doing their job and in fact you have an emissions related fault... probably the cats going bad?
I've been there, done that. Started firing the parts canon at the car and tried my best to talk my mind out of it being a bad cat... in the end... it was a dead cat.
Meow!
Ooh, I don't want to hear that! I'm sure it's a very real possibility, though. I'll put the upstream sensors in first. See what happens. If it comes to needing new cats, at least I'll have fresh O2 sensors to go along with them. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I cleared the CEL before I recorded the codes. I think it is likely that the MAF has never been replaced. I did spray it down with MAF cleaner not long ago. At the same time, I cleaned out the throttle body with throttle body cleaner as well. It wasn't very dirty, just a little black residue on the butterfly edges.
Good move with cleaning things out. I know nobody wants to throw money at things, but consider a new MAF as well as air filter change if neither have been replaced as of late or ever. You are going to have to do it anyways, you can look for holiday sales and probably get both for under 225 dollars.
I was recently going thru a similar exercise with P1109, 0420, 0172 codes that were suggesting I either needed new cats, new oxygen sensors or a new MAF. The MAF was a constant that I had to replace anyways so I did. Also threw out my KN oiled air filter because it was a PITA to clean and instead went with an OEM air filter that I'll change every year. My oxy sensors were 3-4 years old and probably weren't the problem. My FVD 200 cell cats were 15 years old, but we're durable as he'll and I wasn't ready to replace them until I figured out my next exhaust and cooling set-up. Bottom line is that a new MAF solved my cell problem. The MAF seems to have far reaching tentacles.
Good luck with narrowing it down.
Okay, I'm going to revive this thread a bit. I have been getting the CEL at about every 100-200 mile intervals (after clearing the codes). The codes are P0159:State: Current
02 sensor ageing behind catalyst converter, BANK 2
and P0136:
State: Current
02 sensor ageing behind catalyst converter, BANK 1
A couple weeks ago, I put new O2 sensors in along with those little bung extenders. Supposedly, they help to keep the CEL light off when using aftermarket Cats. I have always been under the assumption that my cats are factory originals. While I was installing the sensors and extenders, I found a number plate on the cat only to find out that these are not factory originals, but a Phoenix Exhaust product. No idea why the originals were swapped out for these units. Anybody have any experience with this manufacturer?
Aftermarket Cat
Quality or crappy? Are these the root cause of my O2 sensor CEL? I was hoping it could be the MAF sensor as suggested above, but this new discovery has me thinking it is truly a set of bad cats causing my problems. Searching online for replacement cats, RockAuto has a brand, Davico. Reasonably priced at $314 & $371. Am I asking for trouble? I've been told by the people at "Tech Notes" in Excellence Magazine that in their experience, the only reliable way to keep the CEL light off is to use only Porsche Cats. For that kind of money, I'll just keep clearing the codes. Magnaflow cats are double the price, but if they actually work, probably worth it?
