The tips look kind of weird with the flair, but that's what allows them to be able to be adjusted so much (for things like replacing motor mounts where the engine moves a lot).

If you get one loose, I'd recommend making sure you can also get the other loose before you adjust the tip so they'll match.

Also, it was primarily the length that needed adjustingabout an inch.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I did have to loosen my clamps about 3 years after installing the tips to readjust tip height when I replaced the motor mounts, and they came loose easily, so maybe the anti-seize helped.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After installing new engine mounts I went to adjust one of the exhaust tips and broke the carriage bolt that attaches the tip to the exhaust square pipe. The diagram shows a different tip then I have (mine are the standard oval tips) and a clamp attachment. Mine has a carriage bolt that comes through the bottom, back of the tip through a longitudinal slot for length adjustment and points directly down with a thick washer and nut clamping the tip to the pipe. In order to get the carriage bolt, washer, and nut from Porsche you have to purchase a new tip and, in characteristic Porsche generosity, they throw them in. Otherwise, it appears you can't buy them separately.
I went to my local hardware store, they didn't have metric carriage bolts, which may not matter, but the square fixing portion of the bolt is much deeper then the bolt from Porsche and I'm concerned about interference with the nut and it not clamping properly. Has anyone else had this problem and found a source for a carriage bolt that works? First the carriage bolt to show how shallow the square section is that locks into the slot, and second, how it fits through the exhaust tip..
My 996.1 with oval tips didn't have that bolt that I recall. In any case, I don't think that's where the angle of the tips is typically adjusted, it is usually with the "donut" shaped clamp further up the pipe (in the center of the picture below). Once those clamps are loose, you can move the tip around to wherever you want. Those clamps tend to get baked over years at exhaust temperatures, so mine were quite difficult to get loose. New clamps are only about $20, so it might be worth replacing them.
I replaced my clamps and used anti-seize on the threads, so that should help make them easier to loosen later on. I did have to loosen my clamps about 3 years after installing the tips to readjust tip height when I replaced the motor mounts, and they came loose easily, so maybe the anti-seize helped.
I'm not sure where to get the carriage bolt for your exhaust tip.
Of course, you could always use this as an excuse to get eBay stainless "quad" tips
Well if you really want to find a perfect bolt that will work, the you need to go to the best source for hardware, McMasterCarr.comThey have drawing diagrams and dimensions for everything, even bolts, so you could definitely verify what might work. They might even have what you need in a corrosion resistant alloy, if you're really particular.
I just checked my '99 996 cans (they're in the garage) and they don't have anything like that either. Maybe it's a 996.2 thing, although I wouldn't be be surprised if it was some weird hack by the PO and the threads on the carriage bolts aren't even metric.
Thanks everyone. When I saw the bolt I just figured that that was it and didnt look any further. Also, it was primarily the length that needed adjustingabout an inch. I was being very careful trying to remove it and it simply twisted in half. After reading your replies I went out and took a looksure enough, the exhaust is as described and turns up to a clamp attachment. Its kind of tucked away. I only need a bit less then 1/4 of upward adjustment.
I think I have what I need from Fastenal in stainless for the carriage bolt, washer, and nut. Ill see if I need to loosen the clamp enough to get the movement I need.
Those are the ones. Here's the thread that discussed it previously (kind of hard to find because of the thread name doesn't say anything about exhaust tips ->

). They just clamp on exactly like the OEM tips, that flare fits over a male end on the exhaust outlet and the OEM donut clamp fits around them. The tips look kind of weird with the flair, but that's what allows them to be able to be adjusted so much (for things like replacing motor mounts where the engine moves a lot).
You'll love them -- the quality is very, very good, they fit identical to OEM, and they look great.
Peter—Thanks for searching those out. I got my tips sorted out now and we’ll stick with the ovals. I like the the twin-tips and that’s a great deal if the quality is good. The ovals MSRP is $435. Each. Sunset offers them for $345/each. But $5 to Fastenal and 30 minutes later and the tips were back on. They could use a little adjustment upwards, but the clamp nut doesn’t look fun to get to and loosen.
Glad you were able to get your tips refastened. The eBay tips are super high quality. I haven't seen the factory quad tips, so I can't comment on those, but the eBay tips are much higher quality (in my opinion at least) than the factory oval tips. I could never get the factory ovals completely clean, but eBay tips till look absolutely brand new 5 years later.
For adjusting your tips, I would recommend giving it a shot. It isn't that difficult to get a wrench or socket on (can't remember which) on the nut and It seems like in some instances people have had them come loose easily and others have found it difficult. If you get one loose, I'd recommend making sure you can also get the other loose before you adjust the tip so they'll match. You shouldn't need new clamps if you're just cracking them loose to adjust. If you are able to crack them loose to adjust them now to free them, then it will be likely much easier to replace tips if you choose to later.
You shouldn't need them, but as an FYI, these are the clamps I used:

I found stainless allen cap screws at my local Ace Hardware. They also had carriage bolts but the square section didn't look the same size to me. I tightened them using an allen wrench on the screw, easy.
Peter—Thanks. I’m going to give the clamp nuts a try here soon. The tips are a little low but pretty close to the same amount. Having the tips off I was able to apply polish and fine steel wool and got them pretty clean. They weren’t too bad to begin with.
wdb—Allen cap bolts was a great idea, I didn’t think of that. I ended up having to stack some washers that fit around the square of the carriage bolts.
Hi, Im having the same issue with finding the correct carriage bolts. Do you remember what size exactly you ordered? Thank you.
