POST 1Original post

The MSRP of the Z06 I priced was about 4-5K more than the Cayman S I spec'd, so relatively close from that standpoint, but man try finding a dealership that will sell it to you for that price. Looking around I found people paying from 6K to 25K OVER MSRP for this new Z06. Yeah, it is a good car and all, but it is mass produced, that's just INSANE if you ask me. Imagine someone paying close to $90K for a Z06, they'll never get that back out of it. Seems ridiculous just to be first kid on the block to have one, and I can only wonder how many yahoos will buy the car and not be able to handle that kind of power and wreck it within the first few months...

POST 2Original post

Obviously I have not driven the 06, but historically the Corvettes will beat the Porsche in a straight line, but the comparison ends there. Also the interior is cheap and mostly plastic that looks plastic. I have owned Corvettes in the past and in my opinion (and I am not a mechanic and do not race) there is no comparison to the Porsche. Also, I live right in the middle of GM country and Corvettes are a dime a dozen. On the other hand there may be 3 Porsches in the whole town. Easy choice for me.

POST 3Original post

If I had a garage for 6-7 cars I'd add a Z06 to the collection. I think the car has come a long long way over the decades and has a lot to offer. If I lived in Europe and had the bucks I'd drive one just to be different!! Since I don't have that garage and the wherewithal to acquire and maintain it, the Cayman gets my pick.

POST 4Original post

Looks like Adam Smith's invisible hand to me. MSRP is clearly too low right now for a car of the Z06's caliber, and the market is reflecting that.

POST 5Original post

I feel the same way about the Cayman S ........... MSRP is well below the value of this product. However Porsche has not done the promo that GM has. Once the general public finds out about this car, and the limited production ........ my Cayman S is going to be selling for $5 grand above what I am going to pay /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thumbs_up.gif Plus I am so tired of seeing Vettes come out to the track and just do doughnuts, it's just not the car for me even if it was cheaper. I raced NCCC for 4 years and they were great as long as all they had to compete against was themselves. Yes I know the Z06 is going to be different but I have heard that song and dance for the past decade.

POST 6Original post

Well, I wouldn't go that far. The Cayman, a revelation in vehicle dynamics as it may be, is still pricey for its power/weight ratio. We can try to rationalize it by thinking that for low to mid 60k's, an enthusiast can get fast car with sublime handling and composure, but as usual, the majority of buyers will load this baby up to near 70K. The Z06 will only command a premium for a few months (if that) given how many they are prepared to build. I wont be in the market for a 60K+ sports car for a couple of years, and I fully expect that by then both cars will be easily obtainable for MSRP or less and the Cayman S will have another 15-30 hp. The cars are still very different. I am partial to the Cayman because it is a more refined car that will make for a great daily driver. But short of tremendous skill difference in drivers, a Z06 will embarras a Cayman S (or any sub $100K Porsche for that matter) anytime, anywhere.

POST 7Original post

?????? not sure what venue you are talking about ..autoX or drag strip .... yes to straights but don't think so on the curves ..... IMHO

POST 8Original post

Given that my 2005 Boxster S is equal to a C5-Z06 on a 2.5 mile road course, I suspect the C6 Z06 will be faster than the Cayman S on any track where HP really plays a part, otherwise the Cayman S should hold its own.

POST 10Original post

K-Man S and C My S, I am not putting down the Cayman S at all. Again, I'd pick it over a Z06 myself. But the Z06 is in a different league. Its competition is Porsche TT's, GT's, and Ferraris. The car weighs maybe 3% more than the Cayman S yet offers 100% more torque andmore lateral grip (on ****ty run-flats mind you, not the Cayman 's awesome PS2's). That car simply offers silly levels of performance. Now, the Z06car is in all likelyhood horribly unrefined, loud, with poor composure, and with inferior build quality compared to a Cayman , but as far as performance goes, please, it's not even worth arguing. POST 11Original post

Have been looking around for a dealer close (within 50-60 miles) that may have a Z-06 just to go take a look. My best bud is a Corvette guy all the way and has tried to sell me on the new Z-06 (I think it is the car HE wants..) by touting the horsepower/torque issue. My only response is that I have always wanted to own a Porsche and everything I have read about the Cayman -S says this is the car to own. But would still like to see the car and check the asking price as it is so new.

POST 12Original post

I haven't driven either, but I don't know about anytime, anywhere. I bet the Cayman would win on a tight autocross course. I used to autocross in my 1990 300Z and I could go almost as fast in my mom'sHyundai Excel. Light matters a lot when it gets tight. But yeah, FC is right. In my measure, Cayman 's are the bomb though! I could get a used 996 turbo for less thanCayman, but the engine is in the wrong place and I don't need 2todler seats...

POST 13Original post

This is pretty much why I don't care for the Vette in any form. I'm all past the 'my car is faster than your car' time in my life. I'll take quality, style, and finesse over brute power any day now. I do respect the Z06 for its performance, and it should be awesomeon the track, but I still don't want tospend money on one.

It is a limited production vehicle by GM/Chevrolet and dealer allocations are based on past calendar year sales of Vettes. There will be markups for this car for at least 2 product cycles, I'd imagine. And even at at 25K premium over MSRP, I still think it's a bargain vis-a-vis some of its competitors, F430, Lambo, Porsche GT, etc. Edited by - ipse dixit on 09/09/2005 8:07:06 PM

POST 16Original post

Ferrari is really in a class by itself, not really comparable totherest of the 'pack'. The Corvette, Porsche, Lambo, allhave a lot to offer, to be sure, but none have the allureand mystique of Ferrari. I don't believe in paying over MSRP for any car. If there had been a premium on the Cayman I would have passed. The Ferrari guys who are paying way over MSRP for their 430s, as beautiful as they are, should be prepared to lose all of that cash when they get bored and want the next model. There are plenty of deals on 360s and F355s, the F430 will be no different. The Z06, 987, Cayman , 997s, Continental GTs ,etc.all end up on used car lots eventually.Particularly in the US (and perhaps less so in other parts of the world), cars of any level at some point become disposable commodities. Sports cars are fun, but they are not investment instruments. I've noticed that there are a lot of guys out there who think they are going to drive for free, but they're fooling themselves into thinking they can afford something that maybe they can't. When a guy asks about the cost of maintenance on a Ferrari, I'm reminded of the old saying, 'If you have to ask, you can't afford it'. Just my 02 cents.

POST 17Original post

Really? Then why can't I buy an Austin Healey BN2 in nice shape for less than $30,000?

POST 18Original post

It is a race between the CAYMAN CS I have a deposit on and the Z06 that my father ( a Chevy dealer) has ordered for me.... at cost. Now that is a bargain. S.

POST 19Original post

ScottS, The Z06 will be in long before any potential Cayman CS, which Porsche denies will be made. Sounds like a great deal on the Z06, let me know if you can get more at that price! /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/thumbs_up.gif

POST 20Original post

This thread caused me to register just to reply. First off, I love my 987, and planned on buying 997S next year but after reading the MT article on the C6 Z06, I stopped by the local Chevy dealer to inquire about buying one. Chevy Sales manager told me they just got an allocation and did not have a deposit on it so I told him I would take it for MSRP, $65800 delivered, andhe agreed. We discussed the greedy dealers and morons who pay over MSRP for any car and he acknowledged that they are making plenty of profit at MSRP, invoice is$7K under MSRP plus 3% holdback. I ordered Victory Red / Ebony interior, ZL1 (standard options) andQL9, polished wheels, for a total of $67095 OTD. Signed paperwork is in my billfold. Owned a vette for 5 years so I am aware of theirquality but the new Z06 is likeNOTHING in its price range, dragstrip or circle track. The reported Nring time for the Z06 is in the CGT league. Whether it is Chevy plastic or Porsche plastic, plastic is plastic. No it doesn't have the refinement of a Porsche, but I am sick and tired of Porsche playing games with horsepower. This is completely unnecessary as Porsche knows how to make horsepower butis afraid of hurting 911 sales. Have driven many 911s from standard 996, to 997S, to 996TT and my Boxster handles better than any of them. I would buy a Cayman if it had the 997S motor in it, or even the 3.4 with forced induction, but Porsche knows such a superior handling midengine car would kill their cash cow 911 so they won't build it. If you pay over MSRP for a Cayman you are throwing away $$$. I can get one anyday of the week for just under MSRP from the dealer I bought my Boxster from. If power wasn't important, why does Porsche build an S, TT, GT3 and people mod them at great expense for every HP they can get. All Z06s (even the ones that are completely built) are on hold, so you won't be able to drive one for a while. Do a google Z06 C6 forum search to find out the info. When the Z06 blows off your doors on the street and on the track, you can be in denial but it will still hurt your ego. Bang for the buck, the Z06 wins by a landslide.

POST 21Original post

ITR ....... is an Acura Integra Type R ......... total cost with all mods $25K ........ produces 500 fwhp on pump gas and over 600 on race fuel weights less then 2500 pounds and was designed to road coarse with the best of them. It can carry 4 passengers with comfort and still has ample luggage space. It gets 26mpg if you keep your foot out of it. Edited by - C My S on 09/14/2005 12:58:04 AM

I'm sure you will have fun with your Z06 until you wrap it around a tree orwipe out a group of kids in a minivan street racing........seen it somany times. In fact one of my neighbors just managed to slide his previous generation Z06 down a nearby construction embankment.......totaling it. He was stupid enough to admit he was showing off in front of some kids, making asliding turn, hit some construction mud and went right off the road. Gotta love it.......laughed my a$$ off, typical Vette driver at least around these parts. At least the only thing he hurt was his wallet. POST 25Original post

While I think the Z06 rocks, I can't imagine someone else's car hurting your ego. What the f&**? If you love your car, why would another good car be bad? Besides, it's not like the Cayman is exactly slow. The Z06 will run away from it in a straight line, true. No doubt, tests of the Cayman S will come in at the high 4's (probably 4.8) from 0 to 60 (given that the 987S is consistently tested at 5.0). That's pretty darn quick. Plus that beautiful sound behind your ears, the brilliant road feel and handling, and the sweet shifter will make the thought of some dude in a Z06 not very interesting. I remeber reading an article where the author said he came to a realization while driving the new Boxster S that this is finally a fast car, period. The Cayman S will be even a little more so. Like I have said before, please let me borrow your Z06, but I would rather own a Cayman S . Won't bother my ego to have a big grin across my face as I slog through the gears in the rocket with wheels for a couple of days.

POST 26Original post

I am on the list for the Z06. I am paying MSRP for the car. Some dealerships are charging more then MSRP up to about 15k but you can still find those that will give you a fair deal. The price of the 06 Z06 with the 2LZ package was 68,000. The price for the Cayman S that I looked at specing out was 76,000. I would want the cocoa interior which adds a little money but there still pretty significant difference. It would take a book to show all the specs since nothing from Porsche comes standard, but I did not have nav or larger wheels or ... My bitch about Porsche has always been more items need to be standard for the price. On a boxterthe power top needs to be standard. The Z06 comes with most items standard unlike the regular Corvette. Personally I like both cars but, I can't believe I have to pay extra for body colored or interior colored floormats with the porsche. Give me a break. Make the floormats one price not a variety of pricing depending if you want colored trim. Is there really that much diffence in the manufacturing.
