Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've checked the connections that originally went to the lightbulb (and now connect to the ballast) and they seem to be wired to the two pins circled on pictures.

They're not corroded or bent, they seem ok, checked continuity and checked that there's 12V across the two pins when light switch is on...but it flickers and goes out.

I've swapped ballasts around and that didn't make a difference.

Suggestion
If you can, remove your wheel liner and you can then access that area and use both hands to push the headlight whilst pushing the socket at the back to ensure you get a proper mating connection.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've finally installed the retrofitlab Xenon upgrade kit to my halogen headlamps but i've hit some electrical issue.
When turning the headlamps (dipped beam) on, one lights up OK, one flickers and goes out. HIgh beam, fog lights, indicators are all fine.
I've swapped ballasts around and that didn't make a difference. Also swapped bulbs around, same outcome.
So the logically the issue is in the wiring of the headlight, somewhere. The other side lights up fine each time..
What other things to check? Headlight switch inside the car?? fuses? How can I check the connection between those two blocks when the lamp is in?
Are you sure the plug is properly pushed in and seated in the socket. Sounds like it's not making a proper connection and the housing the socket is in are rubbish with that yellow clip on the back that holds it in place. If you can, remove your wheel liner and you can then access that area and use both hands to push the headlight whilst pushing the socket at the back to ensure you get a proper mating connection.
I've had the exact same problem with my 996 and my lads 986 and both times it's the plug not firmly in the socket.
Thanks Alex, I will have a go at removing the wheel liner and checking the connection.
Coincidentally, this is the side in which the factory light removal tool doesn't work because the rod end is rounded, so i have to do it with a 5mm socket.
You can buy replacement ‘bows’ and when you have the light out you can replace it, or both.
From memory they’re really easy to swap, just open a locking circling and it will slide out.
Just for the sake of it, it was actually one of the crimps in the connectors from the ballast to the headlight. I redid the connections and it's all fine now.
