Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
Otherwise, it needs to go to a repair shop that has a PST-2 or PST-3

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Actually, I'm a Porsche n00b as I have had nothing but BMWs for the past 18 years. Bought a 85 Carrera cab a few months ago and just bought a 99 996.
For some reason, I can't get my remote locking to work. I push the button on both keys and nothing. I have to lock the car with the key. Is there a way to program it yourself, or do I have to take it to the dealer?
As with all n00bs, one must post a pic, so here she is.
One thing I've heard of is the car going into some sort of sleep mode if there has been a long period of inactivity in order to conserve the battery (five days). The key-less entry system disables itself. Apparently you need to unlock the doors manually and then try the key fobs again. I've heard that usually works. It happened to me once after a vacation, so I unlocked the car manually. Afterward, the key fobs worked normally.
Another thing is that these cars are infamous for not being to arm or disarm the alarm from greater than about four feet away. I'm not kidding. There is a fix that you can do at home that basically removes some unnecessary shielding from around the antennae wire in the drivers side A-pillar. Do a search on the Rennlist 996 forum and you should find a link to an article that shows you how to fix that problem. I bookmarked it but haven't actually taken care of the issue yet. Here's a link to a thread that should lead you to the article.

The fob might also just need a reset. Here's a link to a Renntech thread that detailed how to reset the key fob. You may need to register first.
