Suggestion

The ignition lock isn’t too hard to replace, a bit fiddly but various YT videos show you how.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I had a similar failure mode with a Saab 9-5, a bunch of functions didn't work, although it was just intermittent rather than related to the engine running or not.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I have a Porsche 911 996 Targa 2001 Tiptronic with an odd electrical fault. Hoping someone knowledgable can point me in the right direction. With the engine running, the front and rear wipers do not activate, nor the dipped beam or the rear window heater. With the engine off, ignition on, everything working as normal. Anyone help ?? Thanks Bob.

POST 2Original post

Any water ingress below the LHS seat? My usual 1st check is earth points as a bit of resistance can cause odd effects.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No water ingress. Decided I couldn’t fix this, so went to JAZ Porsche at St Albans. It was the ignition lock. Replaced and now working fine.

POST 4Original post

Good to know, thanks for updating. The ignition lock isn’t too hard to replace, a bit fiddly but various YT videos show you how.

POST 5Original post

Interesting. I had a similar failure mode with a Saab 9-5, a bunch of functions didn't work, although it was just intermittent rather than related to the engine running or not. It was also the switch electrical side, also easy to change out, and independent of the lock. I changed my 996 one early this year when trying to diagnose what turned out to be bad dme. As above, easy but fiddly, not too bad with the rh air vent removed. Weirdest thing about that job was cross shopping dealers (needed it quickly) since it is shared with vw and audi. Porsche dealer was like half the price of the same part number for a polo or some such from the vw dealer! It wasn't my problem but at least I have a minty new one...
