Hey y’all, I came into possession of a
987.1
2.7
Cayman
with the 5 speed that I have become very fond of over the last 9 months. She’s got 65k miles and seems to be healthy across the board. I haven’t had any major issues other than the
AOS
showing early signs of failure and being replaced about 10k miles ago.
I was performing a routine oil change when I noticed some black contaminants in the filter. Upon closer inspection, these appear to be plastic flakes/shards. The oil that came out of the car seemed clean (no glitter or shards there) and was only in there for 4500 miles.
I’ve verified that they are plastic and sent off an oil sample to Blackstone. In the mean time, I’m hoping to get an idea as to what
next
steps could be in order to identify where this is coming from and if it is worth the time/money to fix. I plan to pull the oil pan this weekend to check for any larger bits and inspect the oil pickup screen.
Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Part of the
AOS
diaphragm?
Maybe? It’s a very hard material (to the point I had thought it was metal initially) but the
AOS
diaphragm is a softer rubber material if I understand correctly.
I plan to pull the pan on Friday to peak at any larger bits that may be present.
I’ve not had this issue, but early suggestions for plastic in the oil filter are often timing chain guides wearing. There are numerous threads on what to look into/how to diagnose.
Are the guides really plastic on these cars? Ive not heard that before.
I think I figured it out, one cam had a deviation of -3.5 degrees but the other was neutral. I think it is one of the variocam pad things.
My 987 2.7 5 speed had that most of its life and now has 250,000 miles. Don’t worry about it. I cut open almost every filter and remember finding those. I think it’s chain guides. I bit on them to diagnose 😌.
Btw, I sold that car to a friend at 225k and still keep up with it. It has the original clutch! The engine has never been apart, just some expected stuff; water pump,
AOS
, one set of coils, one set of
spark plugs
(maybe he has put in another, not sure). I quit worrying about the
IMS
about 10-15 years ago. By far the best car I’ve ever had. Drove it every day summer and winter in northern NY. Great snow car! Hope my
981
2.7
PDK
is as good 🤞
