Reported cause
I fit the powerflex inserts on my tired gearbox mount as it was the cheapest easiest best option.
Leading evidence: 'cheapest easiest best option' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cheapest easiest best option' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 2' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

With regards to all the mounts - if you had 3 bald tyres, would you only change 2?

Suggestion
I'm guessing the OP didn't know about the 3rd mount and the difference it can make changing that too (and also how much easier it is than changing the other 2).
Replace rear engine mounts as they have supported the engine

So I thought I would replace the rear engine mounts as they have supported the engine for over 100k miles.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I thought I would replace the rear engine mounts as they have supported the engine for over 100k miles.
Watched the videos, simple. Nervous about jacking the engine under the sump as there are plenty of warnings about NOT jacking up the car on the sump.
All good with the first one, needed to jack the engine some more to get the new bolt to show through.
As I do that a steady drip of oil shows on the floor, I'm horrified thinking that I've damaged the engine - how much is that going to cost etc etc.
Turns out it was the remaining old engine mount giving up and dropping it's oil filling. Relief doesnt really cover the emotion.
Anyway, well worth doing (just standard replacements) feels tighter to drive and the exhaust trims are now 7mm higher than before.
Happy Days
Good job. Definitely worth doing. It is alarming when you see that dreaded black stuff coming out of what was responsible for holding your engine in place!
Was that really needed? Guy successfully does a job on his car that is pushing his boundaries and rightfully posts on here.
Your only comment is to order him to do more and chastise him for not having done more?
Anyway to OP - great job, doing anything around the engine on these is nerve wracking - one mistake can cost big money, so I know exactly how you feel.
The more you work on them though the more confidence (and knowledge) you build.
I wasn't chastising him at all, just giving him some friendly advice. If you wanted to read it that way, then that's up to you.

I'm guessing the OP didn't know about the 3rd mount and the difference it can make changing that too (and also how much easier it is than changing the other 2). Maybe I should keep that secret to myself so he and anyone reading the post misses it. Is that what this forum is all about?
Read the room, the guy was clearly blowing off steam after a stressful event.
He wasn't asking to be told off.
And if your only options are to either chastise an enthusiastic member or keep silent, then I for one would prefer you keep silent.
Alex, I took it in the nature it was intended........everyone else, I appreciate you leaping to my defence
Gearbox mount- that's the next job ,but slightly more complicated than the rear mounts. The car is a bit of a Tiggers Broom, I'm intending to have a completely new car within the next 10 years ..... I'll then have to start from the beginning again
It's currently at an Indie rebuilding the handbrake so that it can pass the next MOT
Is this the gearbox mount in question? Design 911 seemed to list this and also a single bush last time I looked:
Doesn’t look easier than the engine mounts…for starters Id have to jack it!
That's for the tiptronic gearbox and I have no experience in fitting that.
I fit the powerflex inserts on my tired gearbox mount as it was the cheapest easiest best option. There's a few guides how to do it, I did this, but there's probably better ones:
Powerflex gearbox mounting bush insert kit - WOW!
I ordered myself some of the Powerflex gearbox mounting bush inserts the other day afterfinally deciding to have a go at them once seeing infrasilver had took the plunge. There's always felt like something is a bit slack or wear with the drivetrain on my 996. Nothing bad but I've had the...

I also did a follow up as the original design of them gave too much NVH:
Powerflex gearbox mount bush insert - 996 Review & Mod.
After I fit the Powerflex gearbox mount inserts I posted about the transformation it made to the car with regards to handling and NVH and stated that after I'd been on my lads holiday I'd review them and take appropriate action. I'm back off in less than 3 week on another 2.5k trip with my good...

In theory the engine mounts are easier to change than the gearbox mount. In reality for me, the engine mounts were much harder, just because they were so tight. I seriously thought I was going to snap the engine bracket.
When I put the inserts in the gearbox mount, everything came apart really easy and the job was done in under 2 hours.
Looking at that, this is the gearbox mount for a manual? Looks like a pita to fit, but you just saved me spending £300 on the wrong mount and then having to send it back!
I wouldn't buy the mount. Gearbox off job. Just get the inserts and pop them in your original mount. More rigid, easier to fit and a fraction of the cost.
I had the powerflex inserts fitted by my local indy, they were awful, made the car noiser and the vibration at a round 75mph was horrendous, I took it straight back and had them removed,
.
I still have the set if anyone wants them.
Were they the original large ones they did or the modified smaller ones?
As posted above, I had the original ones and they were horrendous, so I cropped them down a la
infrasilver
and they're perfect.
