Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The level of dimming is constantly adjusted depending on light conditions.

They didn’t have the part at the time and fitted a replacement last week.

More fool me but I didn’t check what they were replacing it with, and they have fitted a very basic irregular shaped mirror that I think is from an early 996 /Boxster.

Seems that shape of mriros with self dimming functioanlity was used on a number of cars from that era.

I sometimes change the country to Germany and use a local address to search the German eBay.

Personally I'd ask the garage to fit the dimming mirror they told you that they would replace rather than a non dimming one from another model of car, they won't want to do this as they cost over £600 new and most old ones will have started failing however this second hand one is £150 and looks okay.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When I purchased my 996 C4S, the interior self dimming mirror was clouding. Half the mirror was dark and half normal. The garage offered to swap it. They didn’t have the part at the time and fitted a replacement last week. More fool me but I didn’t check what they were replacing it with, and they have fitted a very basic irregular shaped mirror that I think is from an early 996 /Boxster. Not self dimming (I don’t mind that) but it’s an off shape compared to the rectangular one.
Quite fed up I have ordered a replacement rectangular one to fit myself. Not self dimming but that’s ok.
It’s arrived from eBay and is perfect however the ball socket on the back is bigger that the ball I have left attached to my windscreen (this was from the self dimming one)
Now driving myself crazy but has anyone any suggestions please?
I just need a rectangular mirror with the small ball socket opening.
This is the eBay version..
What I am left with attached to my windscreen is a very small ball joint and the rain sensing bracket etc
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
they need to fit what was on the car, as that would have been an option
and yes they not cheap to replace
why would they replace a part from ebay, that is the issue
Yeah the irregular mirrors are from Boxsters, the more rectangular ones are from 911s.
The 996 factory self dimming mirror is an odd part.
I discovered that retrofitting self dimming to my C4S. The Porsche Tequipment one to add post production is actually and Audi part and completely different to the factory one for this reason. The ball joint for the factory self dimming and manual dimming are not the same.

Pardon our interruption...
instead they replaced it with the cheapest mirror they figured would fit which is a £15 Boxster one.
There is an alternative compromise however assuming they didn't throw away the original when they chucked the Boxster one on. Replace the glass for new, all the benefit of a new mirror for less than a second hand one.

It works just like a normal mirror should, reflecting all light. This effectively reduces the amount of light that hits the mirror coating and eliminates glare. The level of dimming is constantly adjusted depending on light conditions.

Very helpful- thank you. Unfortunately the garage is 2 hours + away and I can’t be bothered to have to take another day off etc for a 5 hour round trip. I will keep investigating! Such a faff but there will be a rectanglular one with a small rear socket!
I am delighted to have fixed my problem! When you remove the auto dimming rear view mirror, it leaves a 17mm ball. Replacement non dimming mirrors (from eBay for £30) that look identical have a 22mm hole on the rear. After some research
I can confirm that this part from Amazon fixes the issue perfectly!
Niche I know but hopefully helps someone in the future!
The 22mm ball fits the non dimming mirror perfectly and the other end attaches to the 17mm ball!
In a few years time someone will be posting about their new porsche with the wrong mirror.
I sometimes change the country to Germany and use a local address to search the German eBay. If they don't want to send to the uk, I just ask them to wrap it and send them a label.
In my old C4S, I had found a replacement by Peugeot i think, and i removed the actaul mirror from the casing and replaced mine with it. Seems that shape of mriros with self dimming functioanlity was used on a number of cars from that era. Some Audi as well, Peugeot and Honda. Cannot remember the model.
