The back looks like any other run-of-the-mill estate/hatch-back so if that's what turns you on fine, I think it's so diappointing that the design team (if they used one) should be shot!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Oh, god I really is quite ugly is it not.
My first reaction to these pics was 'japanese people carrier'.
Maybe at a blurry 165mph it will look better.....
WOOF.
Almost pointless commenting on this - just what ...... what is the point of this car? A case of the Emperor's clothes I reckon - no one had the balls to say anything!
Sorry guys. It may look sh**e. (It does) but they'll flog a truckload. I don't know why people buy these things (X5, Rangey are a mystery to me) but all 4x4s look positively awful so whats the difference?
The 4x4 buying crowd now have yet another top-of-the-range type 4x4 to choose from. The Porsche badge carries some kudos so they *will* sell some.
How many, mind you, is anyone's guess. My bet is enough to make money.
No-one on a sports car site is going to get excited by one of these - least of all me.
This has now turned me right off the 996 turbo, as they now look the same from the front. I don't want a super car that looks like some housewifes school run van. I would now only ever consider a 993tt or 996 GT3 from the Porsche stable, as they don't share the new family 'face'. A supercar should stand alone, not blend into a range. What next? Maybe a seven seater people carrier with a 996 turbo front 'face'. Why oh why oh why..........
I wasn't going to rise to this but couldn't help myself
I really think it’s all quite clever. You need to develop a new engine. Do you do a TVR and use you loyal followers as a test bed. No! You build a completely new car that definitely won't appeal to the Porsche faithful. Then use this less appealing side of society (read into that what you will, but we all have a picture of the type of people who will end up buying these things and there place of residence) to carry out your volume testing.
They can be the guinipig, who cares if their 4*4 grinds to a halt, not bloody me! Once we have the all clear, shoehorn it into a proper car.
Oh yes, it looks f'ing awful.
Mind you, with all that ducting at the front, you'd hope the thing would stop !! Christ, I hope there's grills of sorts - you could catch small furry mammals in them !
Oh, and and if it turns you off a 996 Turbo then I guess it's your loss. Corporate identification does have its downsides I suppose.
It does nothing for me, but then I'm classed as a DINK - why the hell would I want one ? To sit in and look down at the chattering classes ?!!!
It'll sell bucketloads in the US, and make a shedpile of money for Porsche, which in turn they can use to develop new cars.
C'mon guys, they're not abandoning sportscar production.
Sure is a bit of a boring looker - most closely resmbles a Hyundai. Oh dear, oh dear. And whats with the Mercedes SLK type power bulges in the bonnet?? Still it is bound to be a cracking drive as this is one thing Porsche do not get wrong and if you need something with four proper seats then this might be just the ticket. Heres hopng they sell lots of them in the good ol US of A so that Porsche can concentrate on some new sportscars/racecars!!
One other thing. It doesn't look very "Utility" does it. Where is the ground clearance?
HeHeHe - I'd love to be there when the first Cayenne Turbo turns up at a TVR track day....... will you be "sporting" enough to allow it to join in......????
Welcome back Leithen - not seen you in a while. Were you hiding under the same rock as Mr Stewart Snr ?
Greg
PS - SUV on a trackday ? Now there's a thought.
As far as looks go I think the X5 sport looks much better. I reserve judgment until I've seen on in the flesh though - things always look different. I imagin one will be around here very soon (Monico,Nice,Cannes).
Oh my God that is awfull, what on earth do Porsche think they are doing! I hate the BMW lorry with avengance because of what it stands for but at least as lorries go it looks ok'ish, but this is absolute crap! Looks like the tail end of an Astra estate with an'ickle wing grafted onto the front of a Nissan Micra. Porsche deserve to be slaughtered for this one chaps!
RichB I can only agree...it looks absolutely bloody awful...like a 911 body stuck onto a Toyota Hi-lux and botched with fibreglass were the bits didn't meet. What a stunningly awful execution...and a horridly contrived bit of marketing
to top it all. Yeah I loathe the X5
too.
Checking calendar.... mmm another 3 weeks to go..
I live in the US and that's SO bad I don't think they'll even buy one over here !!!
Designed on a 'Take your kids to work' day obviously..
Makes the Pontiac Aztek look like a triumph of automotive design, and you really need to see that !
y an SUV?? what's next for porsche? a porsche bus n truck??
Porsche should stick to producing pure sports car (like the 911) and not dilute it's brand by doing a cayenne..
And what about having one of those natty little towable trailers in the options catalougue. Maybe you could spec it in the matching car colour, have turbo style alloys. Obviously it will come with the 996 turbo front airdam as standard.
Thanks Greg - still here, although keeping a lowish profile recently - a few threads have gone a bit far in my humble opinion over the last few weeks - and I decided I'd rather not wade in....
A question of bricks being thrown in glass houses if you understand my meaning.
Big Porsche engine, low cost car (should depreciate like a bomb, once everybody realises how bad it looks).....very nice, big, cheap Porsche engine for kit car use!!!
I think we can all agree that Porsche's designers have created something a lot less than devastatingly attractive.
If you've already seen the spy shots and artist's impressions, the new pics merely confirm the essential wrongness of the shape, while providing the kind of detail that make it not work. Flush-mounted, twin letterbox pipes? Big butt rear lamps? GT3 front scoop X10?
Religious fundamentalists will be forced to admit that mutation is a key to evolution.
Many of you are already forgiving this transgression on the basis that it will fund development of "proper" sports cars. Well, Porsche says it will sell 75,000 $60,000+ Cayennes. I say no.
What if I'm right? What will happen to Porkers industry leading profitability? Is this a car too far? Nope. It's a truck.
Now I have a reputation for liking (some) ugly cars so long as they have style ( Multipla, Alfa SZ )but that just looks DRAB DRAB DRAB , "designed by committee" styling . the bast*rd child of a Picasso and a VW Transporter , with 911 eyes . Horrid , even the VW version looks better
Of all the SUVs I have seen, I think this new one is the first to NOT look like a typical SUV. It is more like a cross between a car and SUV than any others before it. What's more, from what I've read and watched of the testing, it is going to kick some major butt all over the other SUVs. *chuckle*
Way to go Porsche!
People choose SUVs on 2 criteria alone: Badge and Appearance (ability on or off road are incidental). This car will score on only one count whereas the X5, Range Rover score on both (as possibly does the Merc MLthingy).
As to the cross-over - Subaru Forrester, Volvo XC90, Audi Allroad all got there 1st.
Unusually for a Pistonheads thread there has been almost unanimous agreement over the Cayenne's appearance. I'll add my vote to the majority: it makes the arse end of the Tamora look positively pretty
Found this while trolling through Geneva Show reports. This from an interview with Porsche Chief Executive Wendelin Wiedeking.
The Cayenne's designers had been briefed to come up with a 'timeless' design, he said.
"A Porsche should never be hip or trendy and only interesting for one season," he said. "Like the aroma of a fine wine, the design of a Porsche must ripen over time."
High comedy.
Well, they managed a timeless design. It's the ugliest thing EVER !!! Congratulations.... back slaps all round.
The sad thing is, all they have to do is roll it out on the US dealer forecourts, and start counting the checks !!!
WHY OH WHY OH WHY OHWHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
NO PORSCHE, WHAT THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU DOING, DO YOU NOT WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY ANYMORE?
KIA 911 TURBO ANYONE?
jesus h christ.
This is gut wrenching.
If they want to produce a big high car with four seats, why pander to this preverse urge to pretend its an off roader? How f*cking "timeless" is it to jump on that stupid trend? Why carry over major styling cues from their sports cars? They don't work on a bigger car, and they reflect badly on the original.
This thing looks like a cross between a Chrysler Predator and a Land Rover Freelander.
It looks shite from the three quarter views they've used, which are usually the most flattering angle. I can only imagine how awful it must be from the side and square on.
Why on earth should porsche know anything about making a people carrier? Why on earth should they know anything about making an off roader? How would we react if LandRover started knocking out sports cars?
They will sell these things because consumers are shallow. But it is a dismal way to make a living.
The back looks like any other run-of-the-mill estate/hatch-back so if that's what turns you on fine, I think it's so diappointing that the design team (if they used one) should be shot! R...
As you are obviously insane to consider buying such a dull looking bus , I would see a doctor if I were you , what possible work could you do to justify a Pork offroadsportutilitymultipurposevehicle , get a 110 defender and slap an Overfinch v8 in it if you want a cool work vehicle that goes fast and drinks petrol or get a Forester turbo and take it to Scoobysport or the like , and save yourself a fortune
Just thought I'd add my 2 cents (US) in to this discussion. Especially as many have said this should do well in the US. Well, I have to say this is truly, amazingly, one of the stupidest, ugliest, incomprehensible products I've seen in a while.
What on earth were the folks at Porsche smoking? My brain hurts just thinking about what must have been going on in the marketing and design meetings.
I just hope that none of those people have anything to do with future car development efforts at Porsche. Maybe they just borrowed some people from GM's Cadillac division.
Now on the other hand, give me one of those new HiPork trucks any day...
.....then you'll search hers in return ?!!!
Why the Union Flag, McNab ? Surely closeted patriotism such as this would allow a Scottish standard ? You are devolved after all, you know (although obviously not devoid !)
Well, win-win then, Don. We've both achieved an ambition in 2002.
tell you what Don - rather than hire an Omega, why not borrow my Merc ? I'll swap you for the TVR for the weekend. Think about it - no more paying hard earned brass to faceless corporates ?
Greg,
I was just pulling your leg
; I know the merc is a supremely practical car (my Mum has a E230 coupé and my stepfahter a E250 TD!).
You shoudn't feel the need to justify yourself as to why you bought it: I may be one of the youngest PHers, but it doesn't mean I'm completely dumb
(even though I'm French
).
I hate mercs because IMO they are state of the art post nazi "art"; every time I have watched a movie regarding WW2 the SS ALWAYS have been driving a Merc.
I know it's not (completely ?) Mercedes fault but still it conveys not quite a good image...which should (?) be even worse in the UK.
No problem Thom, it generated a fair bit of debate from other persons anyway. (loved Don's comments - his response to my prolonged justification ? "Tosh"
)
You're right about the "Nazi staff car" analogy though - I've got to say though that the Mercedes 500K convertible from around that time is one of the most wonderful pieces of automotive art there is. Hmm, apart from maybe an Auburn Speedster from the 1930's, or perhaps a Cord 812 convertible. Proof that even back then the Americans could do big and beautiful. But I digress.
We'll have to see if Don falls, sorry takes me up on my kind offer of a staff car for the dreaded parents' visit.
PS - no problem with French here - been fluent since I was 12...gave up German though - not a pretty language to speak or write.
>> Edited by GregE240 on Monday 11th March 09:02
Ah well. Worth a try.
Actually, a local car dealer has a Chim for sale at the moment - think it's on an S and a lovely dark blue with light grey interior
. Not much more than I paid for the Merc...hey Don, I could be like you then !
(Note to self: I MUST stop thinking like this)
Greg, sorry, British first, Scottish second. Don't start me on politics - only permissible here in the context of how and what we drive.
Farmer - it's been fun, but I guess we're wandering off the topic. Cayenne a figment of my imagination, Turbo probably an unattainable dream.
Cars so far: 18 Italian, 13 British, 13 German, 3 Japanese, 1 French. Nationality getting hard to define these days, but heart rules head, always.
Wish you well with your new Pug - you must have been pleased with the Corsican Rally result. Great relief to see Richard Burns do so well.
Not a problem McNab - after all this isn't PoliticalHeads.com. Just as long as I can fly or drive into your magnificent country at my leisure, that's fine by me.
Hope the Turbo works out - and even if you don't find an insurer I doubt you'd have trouble shifting it. Or you could sell your place in the queue - a colleague here did this when he ordered a Boxster S. He ended up with an SLK, poor chap, so there's a moral there.
Greg
PS - must ask that nice Mr Cowan when he proposes using their 2002 car. They're still running last year's car at present - wonder why ?
McNab and Farmer, anyone ever seen them in the same room?
McNab, If I remember you have some farming interests, and Farmer, you're name is Ian S?
Hmmm...
Thom, not meant to be acid! Did I say something wrong?
JSG, long arm of coincidence at work again - Farmer is an entirely separate person, as I am sure he will confirm PDQ!
no no, it just makes me laugh that after all these years of motoring at the wheel of very fine cars you can say something like "good luck with you Pug"...Obviously you're not biased; I would be!
Thom, some of the most enjoyable cars I've driven have been small and not very powerful.
Renault Dauphine, Fiat 850 and 1300 coupes, plus a Golf Gti four-speed and a five-speed. The little Fiat was superb on twisty roads, and totally destroyed lots of egos in faster cars.
Peugeots looked very impressive in Corsica. Fords too featherweight and Imprezas too heavyweight.
Perhaps Porsche intend to win the World Rally Championship with the Cayenne...
McNab . Youre right it was fun, no offence intended or taken , with so many cars in your list , you're either very restless or 103 ( or somewhere in between)
but very definately you aint me
I didn't sell the Scoob and order a Pug to follow Burns (met his mother and aunt at the Silverstone Superspecial a few years back )He's a good driver, but comes well behind Colin, Marcus, Gilles , Francoise, and Tommi in my top ten current drivers .
Gotta say the 206 is the horniest weapon out there at the moment .
just gotta save some cash right now thats all
Farmer, bit shy about this, but can't be helped:
(((3.5*2)*7)*2)-((4.5*2)*2)-(((1.5*2)*1.5)+3.5) hence so many cars - always two at once.
Honestly didn't think R. Burns would show well after moving to Peugeot, but have to eat my words. Tommi M's crunch was a real sickener, ditto Colin McR. Sometimes think it's more pain than pleasure watching these things - too much heart in mouth on final day.
Well, it works out. Bravo that man
That would make me ((((3.5*2)*7)*2)-((4.5*2)*2)-(((1.5*2)*1.5)+3.5))-41
So can we assume that from this statement that Mrs MacNab on occasion had to go do the shopping in a Daytona ? Fantastic !
>> Edited by GregE240 on Tuesday 12th March 09:36
I don't think she'd mind me telling tales out of school!! Alex (Alexandra) has always been an enthusiast. Lost a kneecap after a head-oner with a lorry on icy A74 before we met, but that made her an even more determined driver!
I think our scores are fairly even - perhaps more major misdemeanours on my slate, but we're about equal on sillies. To mention just a couple, she achieved an interesting E-Type modification with the help of our garage end-wall. E-Types look different with square noses....
A while later we had to bring a pair of Dinos to the frozen north for the Scottish Motor Show, and decided on Motorail. No problem getting through London, and arrived at Perth around 6 am next morning. I said I would drive the first one off - she said she'd do the second one. I said no don't be silly I'll do both. She said OK. No problem with the first one, so I fired up the second. Shot off the ramp, turned steering wheel, drove straight into back of first one. An interesting alteration....
Then the garage doors - plate glass sliding doors. Remembered to tell Alex something just as she was about to leave. Must have been important, because she took the glass door with her - what a mess....
Never mind - got my own back a few months ago. U-turn from driveway to garage front. Door open. Me driving her two-day-old RAV4. Sailed in with panache - took the right-hand wheel arch almost clean off....
Never a dull moment.
Pranged two! Only superficial damage though. Both sold within four days (damage disclosed).
Daytona as a shopping car? No. Maximum effort device. Many's the time I stepped out of it with back of shirt black with sweat.
Daytona and Miura two heaviest clutches I ever met - not fair on fair ladies! Alex's all-time favourite was the Quattro. Least favourite the Integrale. Agreed with her 100% about the Integrale.
Great admiration for its ability as a Rally Car, but it felt too restless (engine and suspension) for a road car. I think you have to look at the Quattro here. A very hard act to follow, and that probably coloured our judgement of the Integrale.
Even in the quieter parts of Scotland you don't want to drive against the stopwatch every time you go anywhere. But that's what it felt like. It insisted on being driven hard, and you found yourself doing just that, irrespective.
Performance and handling were superb, although behaviour not as good as the Quattro on snow and ice. Lighter weight and shorter wheelbase??
I hate criticising a car, particularly a good one, but the build quality was only moderate, and the interior a bit crude. On the other hand it was reliable and strong as a horse.
Perhaps the most accurate sum-up, for me, would be to say it was a good Fiat, but never a Lancia.
Co incidentaly I owned an 8v Integrale with Rhd conversion , not sure which version you owned, but I always thought it very refined in Engine and suspension ( there again it was preceeded by a CRX , and suceeded by a Primera GT
)but pre-servo clutch very heavy.
Mine was also fairly reliable , though I never realy felt at ease while I owned it , after the first service in my hands (24K) beeing a scandalous £800plus I always feared BIG bills if sumit went wrong .
Agree about strength as well, I rammed a Sierra with mine, the Ford was about 2 feet shorter but Grale hardly sqashed at all ! sold it to a guy from Bonnybridge
as for your equasion it means absolutely nothing to me sorry . "Just a bit thick I spose"
One of the saddest sights I ever saw near us was an Integrale by the side of the road with both oil and water pouring out of the front of the car. There were a lot of large stones (rocks, indeed) and I think this poor car had an unfortunate meeting with one. Grown man in tears. Very sad.
Farmer, for your peace of mind McNab's equation works out.
He is 1,348 years old.
Thanks Thom, kind words.
Perhaps when you come over, if you're on your way up to Blackpool to visit the Sportscar mecca, then you're more than welcome to stop in for tea and buns at Chateau Thomas. Be good to meet you.
Yes, my dream is a 246GT or GTS. It's not the most powerful, its not the best, but it sure is one of the most beautiful.
Well, THAT wasn't on the agenda, but if you insist.....
Seriously, an offer of a pitstop on the way up if you want. A chance to sample the idyllic countryside of Middle England.
Up to you. I won't be able to make Folembray as I'll be in Florida for a couple of weeks.
>> Edited by GregE240 on Wednesday 13th March 11:35
Thank you very much indeed, mate!
You will be very welcome to visit me as well (but not with the merc please
)
If ever the TVR thing works, I will have to go to Blackpool to find somewhere to live and a garage to leave the four-wheeled dishwasher in during the week. Obviously I'll be doing this in the summer.
If it doesn't work I don't think I'll come to Blighty unless my old man asks me to accompany him...but that will be with the AC Le Mans then!
>> Edited by thom on Wednesday 13th March 12:08
I doubt it would be with anything Thom - the times I've been to Gay Paree the drivers have scared the life out of me. It's like Marble Arch with knobs on. Plus, the Eurostar has its own peculiar charm (i.e., you can get the drink flowing on the way over). Added to that, Paris is quite condusive to walking around.
If we're that way, I'll let you know.
Porsche has been my favourite manufacturer for many years. I have loved their ability to find that delicate balance between emotion and technology...until now. The bean counters have quite obviously substituted any Porsche employee who would have spoken out against this peppery atrocity. Porsche has been, and should remain, a producer of sports and GT cars. This foray into the SUV market is contrary to their reputation, and it diminishes them as a marque. I anticipate, with dread, the release of an upcoming minivan to be named...Jalapeno?

What is this world made off???
Porsche presented the new SUV, OK THEY HAVE A LOT EXPERIENCE IN THIS KIND OF VEHICLES...
Soonner then we expect Land Rover and Jeep, and who knows and the Land Cruiser will have a SUPER SPORT version with more than 160 mph of top speed and less then 10 s to make 100 mph.
I heard that Porsche is preparing a new vehicle, to compete with MERCEDES, VOLVO, SCANIA, DAF, MAN and IVECO. A TRUCK
and more is vehicle is very expensive and even worst is UGLY
I'm waiting to see the next Ferrari....
( Italians always had good taste for women and cars, for that reason I'm hopping that the new Ferrari will try once more to imitate a single seater )
