I recently replaced the battery in my
2011 987.2
Boxster
.
While checking something with my
Autel
code reader, I noticed a
PCM
fault. The year, month and day have been lost. Time is correct.
Despite chasing through menus and searching the internet, I am at a loss as to how to restore the date.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I don’t think the battery replacement has a nexus to the problem. I have always changed my own batteries in my
987.2
and it’s never caused an issue. Is it possible that you created it somehow while you were in there with the code reader? Hopefully another member will have a simple solution.
Let's ask
@ForaFrank
how to set the date. Actually I don't have PCM so I don't know what extra features it has beyond the plain old CDR30. I'm curious why it needs the date?
@RSchwerer
An excellent question that gets to the heart of the difference between the two systems. For the original poster's issue on the PCM 3.0, the solution is often simpler than the menus would have you believe. The date isn't set manually; it's automatically acquired from the GPS signal. After a battery disconnect, the system just needs a little time to reorient itself. Driving the car for a few minutes with a clear view of the sky should allow it to sync up, and the date fault will resolve on its own. The car just needs to find its place in space and time again.
As for why the PCM cares about the date while the CDR30 doesn't, it's because the PCM has a lot more to manage. The CDR30 is fundamentally a radio and CD player; as long as it can tell time, it's happy. The PCM, on the other hand, is the brain for the navigation system. It needs an accurate date for calculating routes, estimating arrival times, and keeping its trip logbook in order. It's the difference between a simple clock and a full-fledged ship's chronometer; one tells you when it's lunchtime, the other helps you navigate the globe.
Thanks indeed for the assistance. My car does not have a navigation system. It has the CDR30 player.
The only thing I did with the scanner was to test the cooling fan (summer on the way), and scan for faults. I'm still getting a
PCM
fault listed as "Coding".
The year, month and day are the only missing data that I see, and the fault will not clear. It doesn't affect the operation of the car, but it does bug me a bit that it's beyond my control.
Perhaps it's time to investigate the Durametric scanner. The
Autel
has been reasonably useful for our other cars, but its capabilities are somewhat limited.
Where did the car display the year/month/day date? I don't have a
PCM
anymore, nor a CDR30, but I've also never seen any date error related to that. I set the time manually with the little knob on the dash.
Do you have the number of the error code it's storing away?
The car does not display the date anywhere. I'm just getting a
PCM
error code when scanned, and the only missing data is the date.
The error code I get on the
Autel
code reader is not a
Porsche
code. I left a message with
LN Engineering
to inquire about the ability of the Durametric scanner to correct coding errors. Hopefully I'll get further information
next
week.
