Hello everyone ,
I need some advice regarding an intermittent "Reduced Engine Power" warning I've been experiencing with my
2011 Porsche 987.2
.
Here is a timeline of the issue:
About a year ago, the error first appeared. The car went into limp mode immediately, speed was limited, and the accelerator pedal was unresponsive. Luckily, I was near home and coasted into my driveway. Later that evening, I checked the car and the warning had disappeared; the car ran normally.
A few days later (I hadn't driven it since), I took it to my mechanic. The scanner pulled a P-code:
P0048 - Solenoid Valve for Camshaft Adjustment, Bank 2 (Implausible Signal)
. On the drive
to
the garage, the car behaved perfectly fine, and the warning didn't show up.
I held off on the repair while searching for the correct replacement part, which was difficult to source due to the car's age.
Since then, the fault has appeared very occasionally, maybe once every few months. It usually disappears on its own after 5–10 minutes, and the car returns to normal operation.
However, this past week, the situation changed slightly. The fault appeared immediately upon ignition/startup. I took the car for a short, high-rev test drive, and once the engine reached its normal operating temperature (around 80°C), the error vanished.
I have already ordered the replacement part (the SVV solenoid for the valve lift system) from Design911, and it should arrive in the next couple of days.
My main question is this:
The car is currently running normally again, and the error code is not active. Based on the fact that it only appeared briefly and disappeared quickly over the past year, can I still drive the car
until
the new part arrives and is installed?
The recent behavior—the error appearing immediately on startup—is a bit concerning and makes me hesitant, even though it seems fine now.
What are your thoughts? Is it safe to drive short distances while the system isn't actively reporting a fault?
Thanks in advance!
I'm not a mod, but this is generally an English language board.
Hello

Hello everyone,
I need some advice regarding the intermittent "reduced engine power" warning I'm experiencing on my 2011 Porsche 987.2.
Here's a timeline of the problem:
About a year ago, the error first appeared. The car immediately went into boost mode, the speed was limited, and the accelerator pedal was unresponsive. Luckily, I was close to home and driving in my driveway. Later that evening, I checked the car and the warning was gone; the car drove normally.
A few days later (I haven't driven it since), I took it to my mechanic. The scanner pulled up a P code: P0048 - Camshaft Timing Solenoid Valve, Bank 2 (Signal Implausible). On the drive to the garage, the car was behaving perfectly, and the warning did not appear.
I delayed the repair while I searched for the right replacement part, which was difficult to find due to the age of the car.
Since then, the fault appears very rarely, maybe once every few months. Usually it disappears by itself after 5-10 minutes, and the car returns to normal operation.
However, last week, the situation changed a little. The fault appeared immediately upon ignition/start. I took the car for a short test drive at high RPM, and once the engine reached its normal operating temperature (around 80 degrees Celsius), the error went away.
I have already ordered the replacement part (SVV solenoid for the valve lift system) from Design911, and it should arrive in two days.
My main question is this:
The car is currently running normally again, and the error code is inactive. Based on the fact that it only appeared briefly and disappeared quickly over the past year, can I still drive the car until the new part arrives and is installed?
The latest behavior - the error appearing immediately upon startup - is a bit concerning and makes me hesitate, although it seems fine now.
What do you think? Is it safe to drive short distances while the system is not actively reporting a fault?
Thanks in advance!
As for the problem itself, I don't know for sure, but I believe you can continue to drive with the error. Per the manual, this error is driveable, but you should get it fixed:
Check YOUR manual, because these warnings can be different in other countries... the above is the USA manual.
That being said, if the error is disappearing after some time, it may be a sticking valve. I believe these are oil-controlled, so I have to ask, has the oil been regularly maintained? Are you using the correct oil as well?
I tend to agree with
@schwinn
that the car is generally drivable while the error is not actively degrading performance. However driving while the valve timing is not correctly functioning for more than a short time could cause damage. So be prepared to pull over and wait if/when it happens again. I hope this car is not needed for daily transportation.
I recently came across a write-up on a "
board that shall not be named
" where the owner fixed this by pulling the solenoid valve and cleaning the oil sludge off the valve then manually activated/bench tested it with a 12VDC power supply. Seemed to at least temporarily fix the problem. I'm not sure if it will be a good long term fix.
Hi I had a similar problem eith my 2009 s once.
Check your
pdk
and gear oil level.
Mine
pdk
level needed topping off.
Mechanic told me that if it’s missing a little oil it could affect the oil pressure!
Good luck
Thanks, I didn't think about that, I'll check.
Hi everyone, does anyone have a video showing the location of this solenoid and how to access it? I couldn’t find anything online. Thanks a lot!
