Hello All,
I just purchased an '06 S that I plan to use for DEs. My friend has an '06 base, and he has several sets of extra wheels. He uses 18 inch wheels and
tires
on the street, and he switches to 17 inch wheels and
tires
for the track. He wants to give me a set of 17 inch stock 5-spoke
Cayman
wheels to use on my car.
My question is will that set-up work for my S model? I have the 19 inch optional wheels on it now.
Thanks much,
Steve
The key factor is to make sure the 17" wheels fit over the brake calipers. I'm not 100% sure of the answer, but this would be the limiting factor.
My 09 originally used 17, 18, or 19. Research if 17 was an original option on
987.1
to be sure. Talk to
Porsche
or maybe
Tire Rack
to confirm.
Indeed, brake clearance should be the limiting factor. A test fit and inspection will reveal the compatibility.
Please correct me if I’m wrong but I’ve heard
987.2
Base has
987.1
S brakes, and if those cars could be had with 17s as standard we can extrapolate here?
987.2
base has
987.2
S brakes....only the rear
rotor
is slightly thinner in the rear.
Not sure if you have a
Boxster
or
Cayman
, but it's probably the same... The
987.1
Cayman S
has a "winter wheels" setting for when you're running 17-inch winter wheels — presumably with snow
tires
. So it seems to me that at least some set of 17-inch wheels would fit over the brakes. Also, the setting is so that the electronics can properly calibrate to the slightly different ratio of front/back tire diameter. Without the setting, the slightly-larger front
tires
on the 17s will make the electronics think the rears are slipping.
Thank you for that advice.
Steve
I bought these spacers to do that exact thing, then went another way. Give me a holler if these will help you out.

I just bought these early 986 s boxster wheels for a set of 17s.
They fit over 987.2 calipers.
Needs spacers.
Tires on the old boxster are skinny!
new tires will be taller.
Thanks for the offer Maddydaddy. However, I came across a set of very inexpensive 18 inch wheels that will work well. So now my thoughts of 17 inch wheels is not so strong.
Thanks again,
Steve
I didn't notice anyone commenting on the overall height of your wheel/tire combo. The front and rear need to be close in height and both need to be near the original height of the car otherwise the ABS and traction control functions are going to be messed up.
Clearing the brakes and the offset in the wheel well is a concern both don't ignore overall height.
As you can see from the above photo old
boxster
aspect ratios are not appropriate.
the correct tire is much taller.
willtheyfit.com is a great resource for playing with tire / wheel / spacers.
