The EPS bearing doesn't used a snap ring so I have to source one and the center stud isn't standard.

I'd check with your supplier to make sure they send you the right ones.

I was considering doing this as I didnt see any other reason to replace perfectly serviceable blots/screws.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I FINALLY repaired my W124 E320 Wagon to make room for the 911 engine rebuild. All the parts necessary to start are in hand and ready. But first, I must blueprint the big ends on the rods, crank and carrier. Numbers, numbers, numbers, math, math, maths. BUT necessary to sleep well knowing everything is within spec. Enjoy!
P.S. I'm changing up my video format to more of a Vlog style and have decided to make Yogi-mama a permanent member of my crew. She's awesome, she help make a new dipstick handle out of Sugru moldable glue and cut out a throttle body gasket. I'm just the eye candy, she's the brains of the operation. Let me know what you think.

Seems you are in your way. Following as I am, literally, a few weeks behind you.
LN told me the JE pistons were out of stock with a 3month lead time when I sent in my cases so were going to send Mahle instead. Same for K1 rods. We will see.
What numbers are you getting on the crank clearances? I did not see anything in the assembly video on what those clearances should be. Did you? What are you referencing?
Nice video. Respect for having TWO cars apart in parallel!
Thanks!
K1s were 6 weeks behind the case and pistons. Its seems, although still a long time, I was fortunate as K1s are way behind and will be for some time. I feel like I have to lock them up until Im ready for them. 😎
Now if I can only find fuel injectors for a realistic price. 🤔
Actually, because of you, I reached out to LNE and got their assurance that aftermarket FIs they sell would be covered and not void any warranty to my case. So.. I bought them. Thanks!
OK, 996 fans, it's time I pop this cork and get to assembly. I'm also trying out a new time-lapse technique and am interested in hearing your feedback. It's still pretty rough but I can see this really looking cool once I "dial it in". Let me know what you think and enjoy the show! Premiers 10/7 6:30 pm CST

Let me know what you all think of the bullet-time feature. Yogi-mama has a few new ideas we're going to try out today.
for those of you who don't have 33 minutes to burn, here's a YT short of it in action. Note I had to cut it down to a minute so it's not as cool as the full version.

The assembly video series is just that. The focus of it is assembly procedure and detail.
Mr. Raby will release his own clearances and internal specifications in a publication to be available in March of 2023. Until then if you have the DVD series and workbook you can message The Knowledge Gruppe for some important clarifications about the clearances that you are seeing with your parts. I know that Mr. raby has been giving Yogi some assistance with these figures as he has progressed.
Factory specifications were never released and are not available, so the clearances have had to be acquired using empirical data.
While I left most of the measuring I did on the "cutting room floor" I did take intricate measurements of the crank(main and conrods), and the rods themselves. Take it from me, w/o the DVD and book I'd be hard pressed to not F this up worse than when I hot tanked my crank case.
What people get wrong is the assembly order. The DVD and workbook eliminate that as long as they are followed verbatim.
When you reach piston installation you'll be blown away at how detailed the process is, and how the video gives you certain milestones to reach. Once you hit them and check the work, you are instructed to take a break.
I am so glad that the specification book is being prepared. About 1/4 of my tech support goes to people asking for these specs, and wondering if their measurements are ok.
Coming together nicely. Agree on the piston phase his method is going to really save my bacon also what he does with the front console is most impressive.
Thanks for the reply BRS-LN. I will send in a ticket with my measurements once I get the bearings and rods.
Yogi I have subd and will be watching your progress. We will have nearly the same engines when done.
Well heres a sneak peek then.
@lnengineering
Jake may hit you up to rent me a ring filer because Ive spent all my money on all the the parts youre making me buy. AOS hoses are NOT cheap. MAF, caps and filler tubes. 💸 This engine is going to be literally new.
What's up everyone?? New video time! Things are going smoothly and am honored to have Jake Raby take a special interest in this project. He has provided invaluable advice above and beyond what I got from his AWESOME video series. If you're on the fence, hopefully this video series convinces you of how manageable this can be with the right instructions. Enjoy!!

Oh isnt that pretty? Wonder what the difference between the JE and Mahle pistons are (weight, design, coatings)? Last I heard was the JE are out till December or something crazy so I would be getting Mahle.
BTW is still do not have my block as the coating vendor is taking longer than expected. I am now at 14 weeks.
Making progress! Putting the front console on before you install the crankcase half is GENIUS! Also setting your thermostat to 72 degrees also slows the clock on the RTV curing. No 911 video this week but I am rescuing a 2015 Chevy Sonic LTZ after a couple of Gen-Z'ers took over my garage and made me fix it. Hope you'll watch it and get a good chuckle watching the next generation work on an internal combustion engine.
OMFG it really is dude! Thank you again for the hook up! Because of the savings I was able to buy the "IMS Solution" from FSI. Otherwise I would have had to go back, hat in hand, to The Bank of Yogi-Mama for more money and that would have been bad.
Happy Halloween!! I got rid of the Gen-Z kids who took over my garage last week and am back on the engine assembly. Again, thanks to the Jake video series things have been going very well. The existing IMS is another story. The EPS bearing doesn't used a snap ring so I have to source one and the center stud isn't standard. It's almost like they intentionally made it difficult for us to remove it. Next week will be the bank 2 pistons so good times! Enjoy.
REMOVED VIDEO. It contains TMI. I'll re-drop once I sterilize it more. I need to be more careful on presenting this information w/o giving away the secrets that make this series so valuable. Apologies.
Thanks for the link to vwalley. I have reached out to him.
In the video I see that you coated the case permittee bolts with blue Loctite. Is this to refresh the factory encapsulation? I was considering doing this as I didnt see any other reason to replace perfectly serviceable blots/screws.
Dan
Well, TBH, the bolts SHOULD have come micro-encapsulated but they were not. I'd check with your supplier to make sure they send you the right ones. However, IF they (FCP) would have sent me the right ones they would have been overpriced. Considering thread locker is the same stuff more or less, DIY is your friend here.

REMOVED VIDEO. It contains TMI. I'll re-drop once I sterilize it more. I need to be more careful on presenting this information w/o giving away the secrets that make this series so valuable. Apologies but, at the end of the day, this is a business and I cannot and WILL NOT give information for free if it costs someone money to produce it.
I'll just stick to purple power.
Wow, thank god we have Skip around for help.... guess it is all about the dinero
Don't blame you Yogi, you take whatever info you can get to put this together.
I'm just a chump leveraging what these folks have put together. It needs to be presented in a way that
promotes
what they offer, NOT supplement it. No one asked me to take it down, but out of respect I chose to do just that. I'm uploading an updated, sterilized version right now. Along with a monologue discussing why. I may post that separately as well. My head hurts.
Not to further this unnecessarily, the light trick is an old hot rodding trick that my Dad taught while building Corvair motors. Its not proprietary.
No ding against Mr Raby and I certainly understand why
@Yogibara
wold honor him and take it down.
Sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought that you were installing the EPS bearing. Since you already have the Solution, I would stick with that. I was referring to the larger bearing from Porsche that is a single row used in the second generation M997 engine. My understanding is that IMSB bore in the case can be milled-out to accommodate the larger bearing.
Well it's completely out of the video now. I know it's not proprietary information but I was in a hacking mood yesterday so it ended up "on the cutting room floor".
It's Monday so it must be new video time! This is the everyone wanted to see, the dreaded bank 2 piston installation. So since today is my birthday, 11/7, I figured ya'll could watch my video, like it, create another account, subscribe and like it again! I mean it's the least you can do, right? 🤣

Good video once again
@Yogibara
Bank two will have my full attention. Someday. Still waiting on my block(should be shipping this week from LN).
Also, VWAlley did a nice job on the yoke. Thanks for the tip.
Happy Monday! It's new video time. Short but sweet. Oh and let me know what you guys think of my new branding. It's a work in progress but it's starting to come together.

@Yogi Bear
Well done on the Helicoil!
I just got my block back but still waiting on the second package of pistons IMS etc.
Hiw did you get your block so clean?
Thanks! I've learned my lesson and always keep a box of them on hand. Timeserts too for the larger bolts.
It came back from LNE that way. It looked like trash after I hot-tanked it.
I'm back! I dropped a holiday video last week but am now back on the 996. Lots of stuff going on and at the end I show off the cylinder heads I got back from Len Hoffman. Let's just say they look marvelous. Enjoy!

Hi
@Yogibara
I am curious why you didnt assemble the IMS on the bench instead of when it was installed into the engine?
BTW, did you weigh your JE pistons? I went with the Mahle pistons since that is what they had in stock. Curios what the weight difference is.
Because the engine was already on my bench. The IMS was a While Im In There moment. That and Mr. Raby talked me into it.
As far as the pistons, I weighed them a few episodes back.
Nice job on the IMS Solution install. For future visits to this thread, thought I'd share an alternative to tightening/torquing the IMS Solution nut. Not my idea, BTW. I think member Ahsai crafted this "solution" many years ago.
Nevermind the top screw. Was temporary.
socket to fit IMS Solution nut
Awesome idea!
I'm going to have to make one of these for my IMS toolset.
What size Crowsfoot is that?
I'll grab a spare to also put in my toolset.
Edited to add link to socket on Lowes website:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-Stan...Socket/3387322
Sorry, I don't recall, and did not find it in my toolbox (it's been a few years since the rebuild). Oh, and in case it's not obvious to any newbies that come along and read this, the sides of the socket will need to be ground flat to accommodate the crowfoot wrench.
On a different subject, here's my
head installation video
@Yogibara
are you going to reuse the factory head bolts?
No problem, I'll just see which size will work once I receive the socket and perhaps I'll already have a spare crowsfoot.
Thanks again for (re)sharing the tip!
Early Merry Christmas everyone! I've got one more video before the holiday and one more before the end of the year. Here's the first of the last two. Enjoy!!

We're reaching the end folks. Engine timing is finally happening on my 4.0! New video. Let me know your thoughts. Yogi-mama makes everything better.
