Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have recently acquired a 2001 996. Very difficult time starting when cold after warms up runs great no check engine light? Any thoughts ???

POST 2Original post

Has the IMS been replaced? The timing chains run off the intermediate shaft and that may affect it.

POST 4Original post

I'm not saying it IS that, but it could contribute if there is play in the bearing, the chains will have play. That aside for a minute, you should study the LN Engineering site. The 2001 model year had a higher than average failure rate for the IMS. The 3.4 engine from 99-01 also were very susceptible to oil/coolant intermix from overheating and cracking cylinders or heads. I acquired a 99 with the same engine as yours with an intermix from a cracked head. After finding a new engine and installing the IMS, I added a 3rd radiator for cooling system capacity and never looked back. Take whatever preventative measures you can before the engine replacement or rebuild costs more than the purchase price of the car. I saw another thread that talked about the 996 increase in value, so preserve your investment.

POST 6Original post

there are numerous sensors involved in the cold start process that control air and fuel enrichment as well as high idle. You'll need to start there... with the proper equip.
