Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run fb/f1000 in scca' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run fb/f1000 in scca' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Some people ran special wet sumps on those engines and they survived quite well, even under 2.5G loading.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I bought a 99 996 with 91,000 miles.I bought it on craigslist from Arkansas.2 shops said it had a bad IMS bearing.Well i dropped the sump today and there was no metal.I sent a sample to blackstone for inspectiong.I will do a borescope tomorrow.I am 70 and a Porsche factory trained mechanic.Actually I have a boroscope. The only stuff in the sump was plastic.
I also have a 99 996 6 speed coupe. 98k miles and had the IMS upgrade last year when the third clutch went in. What a joy to drive. Might not have needed to do it because the failures happen without a lot of miles on the engine. Good luck. Oh..... I am in my 70's too.
I will put some pics up of the plastic pieces in the sump. The guy I bought the car from in Ark.was 78 and a dentist. At 91,000 it has the original clutch, water pump, alternator and brake rotors.I measured the front rotors and they are at the minimum thickness.I bought a nice set of headers and 200 cell count cat-bypass from England to wake it up for starters.I have a set of Pankle titanium rods to aid in the rebuild with CP Pistons.Cams are fine.I will bore the liners for 3.6 and coat them with Nicasil.I think this is time for a build thread.Car has a nice wood trim pieces in the dash and shifter console. Also a Guards GT LSD WHILE ITS APART.Ciao Fred
I had the sump plate off today and tried he borescope. This motor is not a Mezger but it has Porsche design. After I saw the design I understand How it happens.Borescope did not work. This motor has its fallacies but it is still a Porsche motor. It is a wet sump but no oil is up top around the crank or the back of the pistons. My first look at one of these.I do not understand why this is badmouthed these days.Maybe a lackof knowledge.I understand it is not a 911 engine but it is well done.I look forward to make it rock & roll.300 -320 RWP pretty easy.
So Fred, I had a 40th AE... I believe it has an altered sump to help oil flow and keep it below the crank.
I ran FB/F1000 in SCCA. 1000cc sportbike engines. Some people ran special wet sumps on those engines and they survived quite well, even under 2.5G loading. And less power loss due to not running a 3 stage oil pump. Maybe something like those types of wet sumps might benefit the 996.
I pulled off the pan from my 99 and was pretty impressed. It is really well made. The x-51 pan is a no-brainer.Great potential.I have done a few thousand aircooled motors. When I am done the ad on Bat will say FOR SALE 996 GT Slim body 360-375 HP.12 month or 10,000 mile Warranty. My engine will have Ti rods and light CP Pistons.Arp headststuds and headers.I am old so only 2-3 a year for me to build.Ciao Fred
I have 2 99 cars.An Ocean Blue Cab for my wife with Tiptronic and 22k miles.A Coupe from original owner with original paint and no nicks or dents with 91k miles. My wife is 74 with vision issues so I am driving her cab 30 miles a month.I will tell you in manual mode the Tip is great. In 82 I drove a factory RX-7 at Daytona.Due to the more relaxed pace a Tip would have been perfect. We ended up finishing 3rd in class.I drove with Mark Hutchins from Mclean WVA and Pierre Honneger from Princeton NJ.A few pics out front with the 2 V10 tdi Touaregs and the Mercedes of the wife.8 more 911 cars out back.Ciao
Wow, you jumped into 996 ownership with both feet.. It is nice to see old school air cooled guys getting into the newer models. Looks like you picked 2 nice examples.
