This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause

When I started to investigate the whistling on my former 987 Boxster, the first thing they had me do was a visual confirmation that the hood was slightly recessed (it turned out to be a mirror whistle, after all.) So, I don't know about the paint chip avoidance, but I accept as true the notion of wind whistle avoidance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Many, if not all, of the Caymans show the leading edge of the hood dipping just a hair below the trailing edge of the front bumper cowling. The lateral fit and overall gapping appear nominal to my eye. I've also seen this feature with other Porsches. My body man suggested that this might be deliberate, in order to reduce the possibility of whistling from the air stream. Alternatively, is it systematic defect? Does anyone have any clue about this?

POST 3Original post

Yes it has been discussed here at least once before and the consensus was that it is normal.

POST 4Original post

Hood Gapping Question Porsche's panel to panel clearance is one of the industries best. The hood's leading edge is designed to be slightly lower than the bumper cover to eliminate the paint chipping that would otherwise take place.

POST 5Original post

Yes, discussed before. But since then I was given a copy of "Cayman-Thrill of the Chase". The cars pictured therein do not exhibit this condition. Therefore it is possible to conclude that the recessed hood was purposely created for production cars. I like the "no whistle" theory better than the "hood lifting theory", but actually don't like either when combined with the color mismatch in speed yellow bumpers.

Thanks again for another answer that is provided before the question can be posed to the dealer. Is this a great site or what? 70 mile round trip now available for flogging.
