I'd check with your dealer to see what they put into the cars when they service them.

There is nothing wrong with running the car at the "full" level, and if you want to do some "spirited" driving, it would be much better to have the oil supply topped up.

At the recent Croctoberfest in Kansas City, I was running my car at probably 8/10ths and holding my own in a run group with other Porsches, Vipers and Corvettes with the oil showing full and had no problems with the car, including the "blowing oil smoke" problem.

The distance between the top bar and bottom bar is one liter, you dont need to add till it gets to the bottom bar.Porsche says 1 litre every 2k is normal some are using more some are using less.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/dance.gifI have almost 1000 miles on myCS now and the car has added oil to itself. I noticed that it has registered one notch below full consistently until around 900 hundred miles. It now shows FULL!(BTW, measuredin the same place and level)
Is this a great car or what?
3300 miles not a drop needed yet. I plan on changing my oil at 5000 miles. I have not tracked mycar, but I plan at some point. My guess is it will use someoil when tracked.
I have tracked my car quite a bit, and added .4 litre to top it up about 4 times so far. Its done 7,000 kms. Apparently this is normal consumption as the Cayman uses oil more than most new cars. I also had the oil changed at about 3,000 kms. It was dirty as hell.
I also have noticed mine one notch below full and then when checked again the next day full. There seems to be some fluctuation in the measurements, but I don't know why. Maybe its temperature related.
Anyway, I haven't had to add yet either
Up till I ran it pretty hard last weekend (1500 miles with attempted top speed runs and many treks down the Dragon) I am seeing a full reading now.
Before last weekend it said one notch below full. 3,059 miles in under a month and no extra oil needed.
Same here. And I check mine at roughly the same temperature every day (morning), so I'm a little bewildered as to the changes.
It makes me reluctant to add oil though, for fear of overfilling.
Can you folks let me know what oil you use?
I've always used Mobil One or a fully synthetic Silkolene in my Porsches, usually the Motorsport variety which I think is 15w 40. I think there's a thinner 5w 40 available too.
I'm about to bulk order some for the SS fleet (Mrs SS's old smoker BMW has an appetite) and if there was a chance of it being compatible it would help.
cheers.
SS7
SS7 - Over here in the States, Porsche recommends Mobil 1 0-40 in all their cars. My guess would be that would be the same across the Pond. One of the reasons for the 0-40 is the valve tappets are oil-fed through tiny passageways, and the oil needs to be able to in there to make them work properly. If it's too thick, even when hot, it won't work properly. I'd check with your dealer to see what they put into the cars when they service them.

I only have 136 miles on my car and it's down 1 bar already. Seems like a lot, but I have been taking mostly short trips and a couple uphill journies...
Ned,
One bar down is the level which is considered "optimal". I believe this is the level that is shipped from the factory. It has been suggested that you do not want to have your oil at the "full" level.
Have fun!
Tracy - Whoever suggested that running with the oil down 1 bar is "optimal" is competely off base. While running at that level will not hurt the car per se, calling that level "optimal" is wrong. There is nothing wrong with running the car at the "full" level, and if you want to do some "spirited" driving, it would be much better to have the oil supply topped up.

As for when to fill, you should wait until your level shows 1 bar down a few times in a row, so you're sure that's where the level is, and then add the proper amount to bring it to full.

Each segment in the oil level indicator is equivelant to about 0.35 quarts.
In a vehicle that holds 8 quarts of oil, one segment down represents 96% full.
To me, I would be more worried about over filling it than being down 4%. There are lots of posts on this board about engines sucking up oil and destroying their catalytic converters. Being over full could be a factor.
I have also heard that oil should be added only when it has gone down quite a bit lower. Meaning you should fill up the oil when you say have lower than half... Is this true or you always want to keep at at the top? I know for sure they recommend this in the BMWs manuals....

OK, newbie oil questions ...
I think the manual says to add a quart when its at the bottom level ... So ...
Do you wait until its all the way down and then add a quart? Or ... when say its half way down, add 1/2 quart? What is the consensus on what ppl do? I would think it a pain to keep adding 1/2 quarts. I can see it if they car took 4 - 5 quarts but two gallons of oil ... whats the best thing to do?
When I first got the car, it was ALWAYS one level down. Dealer said thats normal ... not level, etc. But, I check in the driveway when cold. Now, after 1K miles, I check and its full
WTH happened? Did the thing like create some oil in there?
