Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

OK - here's a guy whose BMW's accelerator got jammed and, well, you can read it for yourself! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/mai...?xml=/news/2006/03/11/ntrapped11.xml&sSheet=/portal/2006/03/11/ixportaltop.html ==RedEye

POST 2Original post

I dunno...the whole 'couldn't turn it off because the steering wheel would lock up' seems odd. Just point it in a straight line, turn it off....then turn the key....most of the time the wheel is fine till the key actuall comes out. But in that situation, I don't know if I would know for sure.

POST 3Original post

Yes I read that and decided hoax or stupid. And since it was a BMW driver...just kidding.

POST 4Original post

I would have turned off the ignition and taken my chances, but I would have done it immediately upon discovering the pedal being stuck. This just happened to me in my wifes car and that is exactly what i did. The steering got heavy and locked butI was able to stop in a fairly short distance. I had floored it and the pedal got stuck under the edge of heavy rubber floor mat. Russ

POST 5Original post

I could imagine that being a very scary moment...expecially around a windy road, etc.

POST 6Original post

Scary around a windy road? Not if you're driving a Cayman! /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/wink_smile.gif

POST 7Original post

Then just as you were about to take your foot off the gas, it goes full throttle. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/cry_smile.gif Pieces of Cayman to hang in the garage. /fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/end.gif

POST 8Original post

If it was a manual rather than an auto which is likely as it was a UK car,why not press the clutch and take it out of gear.Or if an auto put it in neutral.I think the whole story is bs. J

POST 9Original post

Way too many holes in this one........you can always turn off the ignition but notlock the steering column......and losing the power steering is no big deal at those speeds.......certainly something a 25 year old man could handle. Either hoax or the guy isa dumb-A$$ IMO.

POST 10Original post

I remember seeing this in the national press, apparently the chap had wedged the hand brake on and put his foot on the brake and eventually the brakes wore out and the car went faster again! He must have panicked, as there are so many other things you could do.... Switching the engine off comes to mind first...

POST 11Original post

Hoax at best, moron at worst. Steering doesn't lock up if the key is in any position other than '0'. Engine can be shut off leaving steering (and electrics) enable on virtually any car built anywhere. Car can be steered even without power 'assist' steering.

POST 12Original post

I suspect this is total bs, I hope somone tested his urine. Also, I am a BMW driver so stop with the BMW wisecracks, lol. The part where you know he's fos is when he says he's gonna buy another one. Umm, yeah right. I have a car do that to me, there' s no way I'm thinking about buying another one.

POST 13Original post

I once had a 73 BMW 3.0 CS I was driving very fast at night and my linkage somehow locked down in the full throttle position. My natural reaction was to turn off the key. The only problem with that is the headlights goOFF with the key in the 'off' positon. Now what do you do?

POST 14Original post

yeah right. That time I maxed the M3, that was a stuck throttle. oh, and that time I maxed the bike, that was definitely a stuck throttle. I plan to 'stick' the throttle to the floor regularly when the CS turns up!

POST 15Original post

As someone else stated, put the car in neutral, possibly blow the motor and then use the brakes to stop the car. Gotta be a hoax or some pretty stupid people.

POST 16Original post

Panic Assuming it's not a hoax, I suspect a case of panic. As others have said, turn off the ignition. I also suspect the engine cannot overpower the brakes. Jam them on and when the car stops, turn off the key. And if a manual, when you lock the wheels, the engine will die. Remember the runaway Audis.... Operator error. So's this.

POST 17Original post

I have an '06 330 (in the states), and it has keyless entry. I'm not sure if any of the "standard" tricks would work, since both the brakes and throttle are electronically controlled. If you press the START button while in Drive, nothing happens (tried it in my driveway), so I can see how this might have happened if the euro 325 is similarly equipped. Electronic brakes & throttle on the new Bimmers are terrible, by the way. I liked the setup on my '02 3-series much better.

POST 18Original post

Most likely is that he had been blazing along at some huge speed, realised he had triggered a speed camera and was in deep trouble, so concocted the whole thing as a cover story.

POST 19Original post

It can be real I had a 1970 Datsun 240Z and just before I sold it, it started to do exactly that. For some reason, if you floored it, they pedal stayed down. First time it happens its scary because it can be a two lane windy road. Brakes wont stop the car. Had to reach down and pull the pedal up by hand while trying to steer

POST 20Original post

The guy sounds like a nob to me. Telling the recuse not to cut the car up to save his life?!?! He could have used neutral and just risked his engine but decided to destroy the whole car. But on the other hand maybe he just panicked and lost his mind. Safer for everyone now that he's off the road.

POST 21Original post

Recently, when test driving the new Audi S4, I had a similar incidnent. The car had cardboard delivery mats and the drivers side one stuck throttle open full tilt when I hammered the car to check out the 1-2 punch. When shifting from 1st to 2nd I put the clutch in the the RPS's shot to about 7K. I grabbed the key and shut the car off (while keeping the clutch in).Whole deal took about a second. No harm done to me or the car, only the salesman's boxers. I say Hoax all the way.
