I heard a rumor saying that porsche's tiptronic s sucks. Is that true? What's so bad about it?
I suspect you heard from a manual tranny fanatic. I use my Tip for both road & track. It works fjust ine on the track although you lose a few horsepower to the wheels and have one less gear to play with. I would prefer a manual or DSG on the track but much prefer the Tip for in town driving.
I bought auto trans cars some years ago after an accident that screwed up my back, but I would never go back to a manual for street driving. When the DSG finally arrives I'll be able to have the best of both worlds. To you manual guys, I grew up driving old MG's, etc. & not only can heel & toe but also had to double clutch for smooth down shifts in those days. :burnout:
You heard wrong, it does not suck.
I second to that. I used to race production cars back (many many ...moons ago) Porsche tip is the closest thing to stick in auto trans.(without the jerkiness of others etc SMG). When you ran into stop and go traffic, you wish U have a tip car.

Would I prefer it to be a 6-speed Tip - YES... But does it suck - By no means... I have to have both my knees replaced so pressing in a clutch is not an option for me as it's just too painful... I was hesitant to get the Tip... I was pleasantly surprised... I autocross my CS and post excellent times with my Tip... There's a Boxster S that races and consistantly wins his class and it's a Tip...
This CS owner is pleased with his Tip...
While I think the tip is a great automatic transmission, it shifts quickly, holds gears through curves very intuitively, gives you full control upto redline on every gear and actually feels like the throttle is blipped on downshifts to match revs; I'd prefer an SMG for its shift speed. The tip feels a little disconnected because you give it the input and the car responds a split second later, or when it feels the engine is ready; and power is lost to the torque converter.
That said, I'd much rather have the tiptronic S than any other autoshift system in any car, but the technology is getting dated and Porsche is responding to that by adopting the DSG.
Picked up my 2007 CS Tiptronic Auto on Thursday ...... driven manual when younger .... absolutely sweet ... no probs ...... great in traffic ...... i think the Auto is much better than my 330i Steptronic ...
I don't track .......so for me this car is more about subtleties and handling in everyday highway and city driving .....
....would have liked a 6-spd auto? maybe, but not a biggie ..... I have a 39 mth lease .... if they have DSG by then (I'm sure they will) ..... that will be sweet ....
Seems that everyone enjoys driving w/ the tip...
I tested both before buying. I loved the manual-like some of the other guys have sd, it has a little more power but the Tip was solid-despite some responsiveness lag vs manual. I chose manual but after I got into city driving, the manual started to be a pain - parking it, stop and go, steep hills. I'm not a manual expert but soon will be. For my next car, I would have to strongly consider some type of automatic but it'll depend on how it feels. I like the precise control over the gears with the manual but honestly did not get a chance to get used to the Tip. The DSG sounds promising.
My only complaint, so far, with my Tip+Sport Chrono is when SC is on, the Tip is "twitchy." Other than that, it's very smooth and the car is fast enough for me.
