The discs need to be checked for additional criteria though, not just thickness.
Leading evidence: 'Check additional criteria though, not just thickness' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check additional criteria though, not just thickness' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So I asked for specific measurements on thickness as I wanted to check the thickness myself (they wanted to charge nearly $800 to change them all round, and yes I do own and use a mirometer on a daily basis), and they got all cagey and said off the record they should last at least until my next pad change.

I would really like to know what the maximum (as new) and minimum (need replacing) thicknesses are for the Cayman S brake rotors/disks.

Of more importance, heat dissipation through the pad greatly decreases below the 50% point so it's wise (& sometimes required) to run pads with at least 50% material for the track or for seriously aggressive street driving.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

OK, so I have asked before, and asked my local dealer and still do not have a definative answer.
I would really like to know what the maximum (as new) and minimum (need replacing) thicknesses are for the Cayman S brake rotors/disks.
I don't trust the dealers to tell me the truth about when the disks are ready to be replaced, and would like to make the measurements myself.
Thanks in advance.
Jack
The answer will be found in the shop manual (wish I had one). The dealer should be able & willing to show it to you in black & white.
FWIW, on my 993 the specs were:
New front rotor
= 32mm. Minimum = 30mm
New rear rotor = 24mm. Minimum = 22mm
i.e. replace after 2mm of wear.
I'm sure you also know to replace rotors if there are cracks extending between 2 holes or to the edge of the rotor.
Jack - I took a quick jaunt over to the Tech Q&A forums at pca.org and found this:
From Scott Slauson:
All Porsche rotors have the Min. thickness written on them. The part number and thickness is written in a dot matrix on the hub. They do this on each rotor so there is no question as to what it is. The Boxster S front rotors have a min. thickness of 26mm and the rears are 13mm.
Scott Slauson - PCA WebSite - 1/17/2005
From Joel Reiser:
The spec for new 996 Carrera discs is 28mm front, 24mm rear.
The wear limit is 26.0mm front, 22.0mm rear.
If the discs are machined, Porsche wants them to be 26.6 or 22.6mm minimum after machining.
The discs need to be checked for additional criteria though, not just thickness. Cracks that connect the holes or reach the edge of the disc require replacement for example, or grooves or warping, etc.
The pads come new at about 12mm front, 10.5m rear.
The wear limit is 2mm for the pads.
Joel Reiser - PCA WebSite - 5/24/2006
So, using this information - look on the hubs for the minimum thickness spec, then measure the rotor and see if it needs to be replaced. Easy...

Thank you all very much.
Beez, the reason I posted in chat is that I have tried before to get these figures and go nowhere in another forum, so decided to throw it out to the "big" audiance in Chat.
As for the local shop!!! Well they said that they would recommend that I change them, after just one set of pads!! So I asked for specific measurements on thickness as I wanted to check the thickness myself (they wanted to charge nearly $800 to change them all round, and yes I do own and use a mirometer on a daily basis), and they got all cagey and said off the record they should last at least until my next pad change. Mmmm, don't trust them as far as I could throw them...........
As for PCA, I don't think we have a tech Q/A equivelent in the UK. Easy.......when you know how
When I find out the exact deal on the discs (I am guessing they will be the same as the Boxster S) the info should be added to our technical FAQ, right?
Jack
I'm sorry I thought the question was answered before:
One thread said the limit was stamped in the rotors themselves and another said 2mm off original thickness (28mm) = 26mm...as posted above.

That's what I figured - I left it there until you started to get some good answers...
You don't have to be a member of PCA to read the tech forums - but you have to be a member to post a question. There's a ton of great tech info there like what I quoted, that the rest of the world seems to just ignore. Oh well... makes me look like more of a smartypants, I guess.

KS I wasn't reminding Mr Wood to do a search with my post. Both of the previous threads I posted were actually started by him in November asking the same question to which he referenced in his original question that started this thread when he said:
"OK, so I have asked before, and asked my local dealer and still do not have a definative answer.."
I actually thought that he had had an answer then and now...so I was double checking. There was not a single smart remark or any "'tude" offered in any way.
But to answer your question the reason people have asked others to do a search after they ask about something that has been discussed multiple times already and relates to some static information that hasn't changed since the last time it was discussed is that it both wastes bandwith and overly burdens the database and search index slowing the whole site down for everyone.

To add to the data:
Although Porsche's rec for
pad
(not rotor) replacement is when there's just 2mm of material left, the sensor begins to get ground away at 2.5mm. Of more importance, heat dissipation through the pad greatly decreases below the 50% point so it's wise (& sometimes required) to run pads with at least 50% material for the track or for seriously aggressive street driving.
Porsche's rec for
rotor
replacement seems to be consistent at 2mm of wear across the models. Now are the new CS rotor thicknesses confirmed as posted above?
OK, very sorry people for causing this ruckus. My fault completely.
I honestly never saw the previous reply about the stamping on the rotor. And if I did I forgot. Sorry. I havent' had the wheels off since then anyway, not that it would have been hard to do.
As far as definative answers to the rotor widths........
Well, I went out with the micrometer and came up with:
Front Rotor = 27.7mm
Rear Rotor = 23.6mm
So my guess is;
1) yes the dealer was trying to scam me.
2) Front rotors look like they started at 28mm and the rears at 24mm
Thanks again guys and sorry for being such a moron. Not good form for a so called Mod, heh?
