Porsche Brooklands quoted me around £3800 fitted last year.

Had the exhaust fitted on Friday and since then have had a job not to drive the car at every given opportunity, it sounds amazing, i am pleased that i went for it and thanks for your comments to make me spend the extra ammount of money to make it sound like it now does.

My friend was driving his brand new C4S back from Zuffenhausen (fitted with PSE).

We dyno'd my C4S with only 900 miles or so, on the clock...ran it up to steady speed in 4th to warm it up, then one run with PSE 'on'...then let the car run at steady state to cool off...then straight into another run with PSE 'off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Does anyone have any idea on the value of a used PSE for a 996 in reasonable condition? This would be for a unit without the
switch option
I know they are approx £1200 new.
Guidance appreciated
I had a PSE fitted by my OPC for £1360. There has been talk on this forum about other specialists being able to supply the systems quite a bit cheaper. However, the chances of finding a used one are fairly remote as they are one of the most desirable 996 upgrades.
It's a good question, they are available new from Jasmine for £700 + vat, secondhand although rare seem to be silly money at the breakers if you can find one ie anything from 350 I once read to 500 / 600 + vat
I am currently working on offering a moded std system that sounds similar to the sports one which may be of interest to you, do you have the ability to remove your rear boxes to try them out on an exchange basis ?
Paul
Porsche PSE is, IMO, a 'must have' on the 996.
It is a very clever system. It really enhances the engine tone, but never seems intrusive.
1. No, not that I have noticed.
2. Not really. Default position is 'on'. You would only need the switch if you wanted to pass a strict noise test on a track day. When starting from cold, the PSE is noisier for the first 60 seconds or so.
3. No, the same unless you specify otherwise.
4.You should be able to negotiate a price of c.£1300 fitted from an OPC. Independents may be cheaper. There is a second hand one in this month's 911 World, but it is probably sold by now.
5. Porsche don't claim any performance benefit. There may be a slight advantage, and, subjectively, it feels a bit quicker.
There are other options but they may compromise your warranty.
My friend was driving his brand new C4S back from Zuffenhausen (fitted with PSE). On the way thru' France was pulled twice by the flics because of excess noise....
Certainly a head-turner. Beware OPC prices for the wiring up of the vacuum controlled switch!
Just driven through France and no problem with les flics
1. No not at all - a bit of a growl when you accelerate.
2. Expensive but I'd get it if money is no object - nice to have the option (I don't!)
3. Nope
4. I paid 1300 at PCT.
5. Feels faster to me - someone else did a dyno and reckoned 10-15 bhp extra.
Was at Le Mans and the people loved the sound - everyone was revving their engines (childish but fun). Would have felt embarassed with the standard exhaust.
Thanks for your replies.
I had a call from my local OPC who have so far looked after me well. They quoted £1600 + VAT which i think is a lot a standard system is half that.
The switch they told me would make no diffrence in cost may be £20 which to me seamed a little funny as i thought this was an expensive option? They said it wasn't as all the wiring is there.
I am going to shop about to see what sort of pricing diffrence i can get.
Phil
P.S Just spoke to J Z Machtech and they recomend a stainless system made by a German company called MANTIEY this system is meant to be like the PSE but half the cost no switch etc fitting time 1.5hours. does anyone have experince of this system??
Don't forget to quote your PCGB membership number for a discount.
I purchased my 996 last September and in October I had the sports exhaust fitted. I haven't regreted it one bit and I always get asked about it at meets. I also have the switch fitted so I don't anoy the neighbours in the early hours of the morning.
The final price was:
Labour (6.5 hours @ 84.95): £496.96
Exhaust System: £1020.37 less 5% discount £969.35
Wiring harness: £94.36 less 5% discount £89.64
Tip Switch: £19.13 less 5% discount £18.17
Net: £1574.12
Vat: £275.47
Total: £1849.59
Some would say it is a bit price but I just love it

Steve
Thanks for the detailed costings. I am awaiting for one more quote to come in then i am going to get booked in for the system with the switch also so that i keep piece with my neighbours on those early mornings. Prices do compare to yours with discounts included.
Looking forward to it.
Phil
Many are fitted after delivery, so won't necessarily show on the code list. However, I think you would know if you have one or not. The standard system sounds neat and purposeful. The PSE sounds like a slightly muted Ferrari V8.

That could've been me.
We dyno'd my C4S with only 900 miles or so, on the clock...ran it up to steady speed in 4th to warm it up, then one run with PSE 'on'...then let the car run at steady state to cool off...then straight into another run with PSE 'off.
The 'off' results showed 10-15BHP less (peak loss being 16BHP) over the 'on' position.
Same car, same dyno...only 5 minutes apart...take from that what you will.
We came back from the Nurburgring recently giggling and laughing as we passed under every bridge and through every tunnel, PSE blaring, windows down, sunroof open. Childish, as you say...but fun.
Video footage of a few 'fly pasts' between the grandstands at Reims would also suggest the PSE to be a fantastic addition - a truly spine tingling soundtrack.
The only downside is the need to get that final edge to the sound that happens above 5200RPM - so don't expect your fuel economy to get any better!
On the PSE there is an automatic overide which operates roughly between 30-45/50MPH even if the PSE is on, this is to allow the car to pass some drive by noise testing. It is possible to bypass this by disabling the relay, I did it and it sounds as it should at low speed. The details are on renntech if anyone is interested.
You mention under bridges, the sound is brilliant, i had a noisy Caterham before my 996 and the sound did not compare, people are shocked when they hear the roar and see it is a 911. The boy racers in there Saxos are so put to shame with there halfords exhausts with bin tial pipes it makes it so worth it. I must say i feel a bit childish too but who cares.
Phil
There sure is...and how annoying is that?
..and it works so well!
It should be standard like that.
Anyway, anyone who isn't sure about the mod, I bought a spare relay to mod...so I'm left with the standard relay.
I will happily mod my spare relay and send it to any other club member who wants a pre-modded relay and isn't comfortable doing theirs themselves.
All I'd ask is that they send me their standard relay back after they've proved it works.
It's a 30 second job to swap out relays...job done.
The PSE remains switchable, but when 'noisy' it's always noisy...none of that annoying going quiet nonsense.
Too right Phil,
My little European trip involved my C4S with PSE and a 964 C4 with the infamous 'G pipe'.
The PSE drowned the 964 out at idle, through the gears and on fly-pasts, as the video footabe illustrates!
What an incredible sound...although not especially 911 like in the accepted sense.
Yeah...but doesn't it make you smile? [
]
It almost makes you rev it to 7000 just to be able to lift off and hear all that popping and banging. Or is that just me?
I'll get my coat...
Porsche Brooklands quoted me around £3800 fitted last year. It was £2000 alone for the standard mufflers...
Carnewal in Belgium can fit a PSE for you - priced in euros; used to be a bit cheaper than Porsche but then Brexit happened!! There are other switchable options also.
If your mufflers are in reasonable shape a 'Gundo Hack' is worth considering. Much improved noise and character, just no switch. You arguably don't need the switch either as it's only noisy when you rev it.
