Just checked the options list under the bonnet and there is a list of cryptic codes - had look on the web and the only one relating to audio is 440 which is "Manual antenna, 4 speakers".

My PCM is running version 3.0 software so assume that this is nothing to do with anything really?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just wanted to check something on this audio problem I have with my new 996. If the door speakers say Bose on them I assume it has the Bose amp installed?
Secondly, does anybody know what the Bose amp in a 996 actually looks like? Does it actually say Bose on it becuase I just had a look at mine and it's pretty non-descript - just a basic black box. Also, it appears that it should be bolted in four places; two at the top and two tucked behind the spare wheel - only two of the bolts where there.
Maybe I'm being a little paranoid but is there a possibility somebody could have changed it for the non-Bose amp?

Fold your back seats down, and there should be a small sub behind each seat back,
They look like small trumpets in behind the seats, in plastic

Hmmm, ok. This is odd then. Yes, the amp is a black box, didn't see a part number on it but then I didn't actually remove it from the bracket to look underneath.
However, there are no bass ports behind the back seats at all, just carpet. Does this mean that I don't have Bose? If so, why would I have Bose branded door speakers (or at least the covers)?
When I asked the OPC sales guy about Bose he assured me that it had it installed...?

Ok, just been doing some more reading on this. I have read a website which suggests that the 996 only has a 10-Speaker Bose system, rather than the 13 which is in the 997.
If this is the case, then I have 10 (4 in the dash, 4 in the rear and 2 in the door).
This may all sound a little paranoid but I don't want to find myself in the position as having spent a big wedge of cash on a 911 only to find that I haven't got exactly what I was sold.

Very Odd, Kirk,
I know the cabs have the sub, in the middle of the front footwelds, behind the passenger side tunnel.
Maybe only the 4wd models have the subs, behind the seats?
It is a long time ago, however I am sure that you could order all the bits independantly of each other,
eg, bose speaker upgrade,
bose sub & amp,
not sure though.
Check the front for the amp

You could try contacting Porsche customer service and ask them to verify which options were supplied with the car when it was new.

Have you checked the options list on the lable underneath bonnet. That will tell you if it was supplied with the bose upgrade - I think.

Hey folks, appreciate the responses.
There is definately an amp in the luggage compartment next to the CD multi-changer. Although this could just be the 'regular' Hi-Fi amp upgrade rather than the Bose.
Just checked the options list under the bonnet and there is a list of cryptic codes - had look on the web and the only one relating to audio is 440 which is "Manual antenna, 4 speakers". I have two options which don't appear in the lists I have found, 665 and 670. According to another site I just looked at, the bose system is option 680, which isn't listed, but then neither is 490 which is the Hi-Fi sound system :?
Strange. I think a call to Porsche might help shed some light on this one....

Another thought. Being new to all this, does the PCM software affect the audio system? I think I have PCM2 running v3.0 software. When I look at the Sound options I don't have anything listed for AudioPilot.
Migration info. Legacy thread was 73684
Hmmm, guess its not Bose then
If the wrong software was loaded into PCM would this affect Bose?
I was supplied with the Navi disks along with a disk titled "PCM 2.0 Multimedia Update CD Europe 911 Boxter". My PCM is running version 3.0 software so assume that this is nothing to do with anything really?
Migration info. Legacy thread was 73689
havent a clue about the software,
however if you havent got Audio Pilot, and the subs in the rear then I guess it is not Bose, however why have you bose on the speakers?
Also the 40th Anniversary I believe came with everything as standard, and Bose was part of the package from what I remember, check it out.
Migration info. Legacy thread was 73697
Thanks for that. This is my thought as well - it all seems quite strange - tempted to pull the amp out of the front and see if it has any Porsche part code listed. Either way, it's odd that it has the door speakers with Bose on if it doesn't have the system fitted - very odd indeed.
Not sure about the 40th Anniversary spec. There is a an option (C16) which is the UK LUX Spec - no real details on what that includes though.
Waiting on a call back from the Porsche dealer now....

So, had a call back from the sales guy who agrees with the comments on here - if it doesn't say Bose on the amp and there are no bass ports for the subs behind the seats then it ain't Bose
Pretty dissapointing and to be honest I'm not sure if I can try and twist their arm in to a free upgrade - given that they did assure me it had the Bose system installed. Since it has an external amp I can only assume it must be the intermediate option - but then I don't have GAL on PCM which I would have expected to have. All very, very odd - and annoying, especially for my first Porsche
