Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Water pumps are much cheaper than a head repair/replacement and the possible collateral damage.

Suggestion

There is a reason why 996 and 997.1 water pumps should be changed preemptively at every 60,000 miles.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking for some guidance on what may be causing the irregular tapping or rattle-like sound come from the left side of the engine. You can hear it in the clip below. Car is a 2003 Carrera 4. (Its not my car and so Im not used to its noises.) Thanks (not sure if video upload is working)

POST 2Original post

Sounds like an accessory. Remove the serpentine belt, spin the alternator, water pump and idler/tensioner pullies by hand. You can also start the engine briefly w/o the belt to confirm no noise.

POST 3Original post

Im guessing a broken water pump impeller is rattling around in the pump housing.

Or sooner depending upon time in service. I follow a 4 year change interval. Is that too soon? Maybe, but I'd rather replace it myself every 4 years than experience a cracked head and intermix. Water pumps are much cheaper than a head repair/replacement and the possible collateral damage. I currently have enough Rein water pumps, LN t-stats, and gaskets in stock that I'm good through 2039.

POST 6Original post

I'm less fatalistic than my comrades. While they can break off plastic impellers and metal ones can scuff the block, they can make plenty of noise without doing either. You won't know until you get it out, if that turns out to the problem. GLWS!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the feedback. The water pump was most recently replaced at 93,550 miles (10k miles ago) and 7 years ago.
