First time here and looking for some help, please.
After many challenges of upgrading my head unit to a android head unit (Atoto A6) on my 2007
Boxster
987 with Sound Package Plus (ASK), I also decided to upgrade the woofer (Boss CH6530) and midrange (Boss CH3220) speakers as the woofer on the driver side was blown and midrange on the passenger side.
After replace all 4 speakers with Boss speakers I found the woofers do not work. The midranges do not produce the same sound as the original. What am I doing wrong? Is it the ASK amp that needs to be upgraded?
I have tried just about everything and can’t seem to figure it out. A quick project which was only supposed to take a few hours has now cost me 2 weeks.
I have read that the ASK amp maybe the problem. Could this be the same case here? If so, then why did the old woofer (the good one) work well.
Thank you in advance for your help and support
Hi,
There were actually two different SPP systems, and two different ASK amps. Pre-2009, the amp primarily powers the door woofers. The midrange and dash speakers are powered from the actual radio.
You might find this thread useful:

I'm not familiar with the Atoto A6 - any info on it might be helpful. The ASK amp has to be turned on. On the stock system the amp always has a 12V power feed.. it also has a 12V trigger wire that must see 12V to turn the amp on. Without that trigger signal - no woofer output, which is what it sounds like is happening with your installation.
Here is the early ASK/PPS functional diagram:
As you can see - the ASK amp only feeds the two woofers in the doors and the center speaker in the dash.
You need to make sure the ASK amp has it's trigger signal to turn on when the new headunit turns on.
Here is an actual diagram - the trigger wire is labeled "Plus Switched" - red/black wire.
Your new headunit probably has a switched 12V output for a power antenna (or antenna amplifier) - that would work as a trigger signal for the ASK amp.
Thank you for your response and the diagram, very helpful.
I connected the amp on but still could not get any power to the woofers. I also tried to connect it to the power antenna, no luck.
I am stuck.
Without being there - with a voltmeter and a 1.5V battery.. it's hard to diagnose.
I would first remove the speaker connector for the two speakers from the ASK amp. Then power off the amp. and with a few small wires hooked to the 1.5V battery, flick the 1.5v battery across the + and - of each speaker's pins at that connector.
Do you hear a "click" from the speaker?
If not - there is an issue with wiring between that connector and the speakers. Measure the resistance of the speaker at the loudspeaker. Measure the resistance of the speaker at the connector (don't count on the marked "Ohms" on the speaker - that's impedance at a certain frequency, the resistance may be close, but not the same). Is there a difference? Measure the resistance of each wire from end to end (from the connector on the door to the connector to the amp - it should read very close to 0.
If you do hear a click from the speaker then the wiring is intact from the amp to the speaker.
Next
you want to know if the amp is working.
Turn the ignition and head unit back on. At the amp connector measure the voltage from the RED/BRN wire (pin-1) to the BRN wire (pin #2) - it should read battery voltage. Measure the voltage from the trigger wire connection Pin 11 (BLK/RED) to Pin 2. It should also read battery voltage. If either is missing - find out why. The amp won't work without power on both of them.
If you read voltage above on both the power and trigger wire to the amp - plug the connector back in and repeat the measurements. If either is missing - find out why. The amp won't work without power on both of them.
Finally - if you got voltage in all the tests above, let us know and I'll work up a way to test if the amp is working..
Good luck, I'm moving this to the electronics/audio section of the 987 forums.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I will try that and get back to you. Greatly appreciate your help 🙏🏼
