Got in a really clean C4S with 40k miles for 42k I'll probably drive it for a year or so and then sell it for around what I bought it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im interested to know about others stories. Mine is that I bought this black 00 cabriolet in March of 18 with 88k miles for $18,000. Then I sold it in September of 21 with 99,500 miles for $26,000.
A few days later I bought this 99 coupe with 69,000 miles for $28,000.
Share any similar stories youve got.
it will be interesting to see where prices will be in the spring. Im assuming the market has softened in the last couple of months and will stay that way until March or April. But global supply chain issues are expected to continue for quite a while, so that may continue to bolster the used car market.
Buy Low, Sell high, Buy High...it sounds like a break even to me. Personally I love the direction your garage went.
Whatever the scenerio is just buy, never sell!
I went from a 99k mile 996 to a 69k 996 - one of the reasons it doesnt feel like a break even. And yeah, Im much happier with the coupe, and Im done with the hassles of having a black car.
And we are not even counting the cost of ownership. It looks like only looking to the buying price makes the deal... but in 2-3 years of ownership there is a lot of cost involved in maintaining a 996 (if done right)
There may be, a lot of maintenance costs. In my case there were not. My last 996 was rock solid, but youre on a tangent about possible maintenance costs.
I think I must have done a poor job of emphasizing in this thread that I was able to sell my 00 for 140% of what I paid for it years earlier, and get into a much lower mileage, more desirable 996. I was hoping to hear other similar stories, but so farnot so much. 😄
The guy who bought my 00 cabriolet loved it and paid my asking price. I didnt have to sell him on it. He
loved it.
The guy who sold me the 99 got his asking price. I didnt even try to get him to sell it for less. I knew it was the one I wanted, and I knew it was well sorted out.
Funny because I thought bought high back in 2017, doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Haven't sold, but if needed to, could walk away with a decent chunk of profit.
Bought a my dream (decent) 72,000 miles 1999 in Q3 of 2021 for 23.9...
I've wondered if I could get more than I paid, but I'd rather be buried in it now. (which I will be one day financially
)
Bought my car in 2015 for $24 CDN, which at the time was probably 18k USD. I overpaid at the time, but I've enjoyed the car very much, even after IMS failure and replacement with a built 3.8 motor. I'd rather sell my other cars than see this one go.
Its high mileage (150mi) and needed a few things here and there, but yes, I got an incredible deal. Clean title, accident free. Brand new motor installed in 09 at the dealership under warranty.
I keep throwing the idea around myself, similar to you I bought my 99 in 2018 for 18k with 55k miles on it. I've replaced the top, imsb, clutch, aos, rms and some other odds and ends. The problem is I am not going to find any deals the way the market it is right now so I am not sure its even worth it.
i think this is a better time to buy than it is to sell. If you can hang on to your cabriolet until the spring, maybe.
Mine had the IMS, RMS and clutch done, but your mileage was way lower. You did well.
Every year going forward will be a better time to sell. Of course there's more optimal times of year to sell (spring, summer, early fall), but most that bought a few years ago will break even or net some profit.
I got mine for 27 in April
but its my favorite in years Im also updating it to stock and UAOS and solution is being done as we speak because I just hit 100k!!!
Since we're havin a pissin contest!
I've had negative cost of ownership on my daily every month since January 2015, thanks to VAG buying back my mk7 TDI at full value as part of dieselgate.
Flipped an S3 in between and then I bought a new '19 Audi RS3 in July 2020 for $51.3k+tax(~57k) drove it for 12k miles and sold it August for 62k even. The pandemic special.
Got in a really clean C4S with 40k miles for 42k I'll probably drive it for a year or so and then sell it for around what I bought it.
Have you all met my friend and fellow rennlist member SKM? He took the time to send me this charming message.
Should I have to explain to someone why this topic is interesting to me? I dont think so.
Yes! I think its great to be able to enjoy a car like this for a while, and then sell it to someone else so they can enjoy it, and potentially break even in the end.
Your car looks super clean! Gorgeous ride. I think all the guys with '99 Carreras in arctic silver metallic should get together for a car meet because we would make one hell of a crowd.
I am thinking I could have profited from my car if I hadn't contacted Jake Raby in '19 for an upgraded engine. I did it more as a proactive thing and the internals ended up looking really good pre-rebuild. I bought for $21k CAD in 2016 with 60k miles on the clock. No regrets though, this '99 is a long-term keeper.
INSECURE!? ME!? I'M SECURE YOU'RE INSECURE.
Anyway I bought my car for what I thought was a good deal in 2016 after E46 M3's got priced out of my comfort zone and I kinda stopped looking at receipts around 2017 so that when my wife asks about a purchase on the credit card I can act like it's the first one.
I kick myself everyday for selling my early build 99 C2 for so cheap after putting so much wrench time on it...
I originally acquired my first Guards red 99 C2 in spring of 2017. Got it in a trade for a Corvette, with some cash on top. I was in it for $9500 at this point. Car had 137k miles, a remanufactured engine, and almost zero service records, so I really took a risk. After driving it about a year and putting several thousand dollars worth of preventative maintenance, I got in a minor accident with a fixed object (because I'm a child behind the wheel of anything fun), insurance totaled it because the body shop I took it to wanted $12k to repaint the whole car and I only had a claimed value of $15k. Used the insurance money to put all new suspension under it and a numeric shifter. I left the scratches/dent as-is (See below) Fast forward to fall 2020, I decided to sell the car to a co-worker for $13K with a salvage title and roughly 155k miles to fund another project.
Majority of the damage seen above: Yeah... they totaled this car from this, and two popped tires.
Lot of regrets here. I should have NEVER let the insurance company salvage the car. That in itself was a long story. Major lack of communication from both the shop, and insurance company (Hagerty) caused the car to rack up thousands of dollars of storage fees at the shop just sitting there while the two squabbled about cost and scope of work. After months of no work getting done to my car, I just wanted it back. The only route was to salvage the car to get it out of hock.
I digress. Missed the driving experience of the 996, so this past August I bought another 1999 996 C4 for $18,500 with 137k miles, and good, but not great service records. Now feeling like I'm starting all over with doing all the preventative maintenance I did to my last car. I plan on driving this thing until 1 of the 30-something failure modes of the engine stops me on the side of the road, then assess my bank account/marital status if I should cut my losses or put in a ticket at FSI.
I enjoy talking about 996 ownership experiences and hearing about other peoples experiences. I thought it was something this website was perfect for. Simple, like-minded interest in the Porsche 996.
Im surprised some people perceive this as braggadocio and insecurity, but then again the older I get, the more people I encounter, and the less I seem understand human behavior.
I recently had an opportunity to make $20k over purchase price for my 996 (bought in 2007) . The wife didn't want me to sell it (
shocker
, I know), because of it's unique color and setup. I decided to keep it and pass it to my son at some point. And to be honest, I love the car, it's a 99 with 44k miles, runs strong, have had ZERO problems. All I've done is changed oil and put gas in it. And for a car that's more than 20 years old, looks pretty damn cool.
That being said, good choice on the upgrade. I prefer the coupes over convertibles. I'm also from SF, so convertibles are kind of useless out here lol.
Wow. Impressive. Perhaps you should consider quitting your day job and become a Porsche flipper. No one you see is smarter than he

I was being discreet sending you a PM about bragging about your profits, but since you broadcast it.
Most people save such stories for their grandchildren, not the general public.
I really have no desire to clash with you, or anyone. If you didnt like my topic, maybe ask yourself why you felt compelled to send me a critical personal message. You would surely benefit from figuring out why you made that choice.
After over 20 years on Porsche forums, Ive never seen someone post to brag about their profit on a car sale. Thats all. Just not the sort of thing most people broadcast publicly. If thats enjoyable for you, go for it.
Bought my 2003 C4S back in 2013 for 32.5K and 50K miles. Is now 100K and have already upgraded the IMS with an EPS Solution, C&PP and new shocks and a few suspension bushings. I do my own maintenance so cost was nominal. I know I can sell it where I live for 40k+ tomorrow, not that I ever will as I just absolutely love my ride
. Used car prices are substantially higher here being an island and older, 60-70k miles and non AWD 99-03 996 Carreras are in the mid $30-35Ks.
@SKM
If you've read the 996 forum recently, all people do is talk about prices?
People are looking at them now as investments. It only seems logical people are checking in...
I see. Im not a long-standing forum user so I guess I dont know whats considered off-putting. Ill defer to you as someone with 20 years experience and in the future Ill give extra consideration to what might come across as bragging.
What about you? Any self-reflection or insights gained from our exchange?
It's gauche to be petty and whiney about what people want to share on the internet. You PM'd the dude, and he shared your butt-hurtness, which I find quite humorous.
Same as I stated in the other thread, some people bought at a dip (or even recently), and now are enjoying the fact that should they sell, breaking even or making some extra is a pretty nice perk and are just sharing their experience.
You’re the guy selling wheels on PCA.org.
I have some rude and off putting responses from you regarding your wheels, which in FACT reveal your your true colors.
I’m glad we don’t have many Trolls like you in our community.
Get lost pal. Everyone sees through you.
It was nice to wake up and find that two other rennlist members commented on your rudeness as well. I appreciate that.
You used the word gauche. Clearly you dont know what the word means.
It seems like you could use some emotional support in your life. I hope you get it, because trolling and insulting people who you dont know is really just a cry for help.

yes a hard but valuable lesson learned here. Others can benefit from your experienve
after an accident TAKE YOUR CAR HOME. Dont let it be wjth the insurance company or the salvage Yard or a body shop.
its your car take it home. Its impossible for them to charge your bogus storage fees now. And everyone needs to come to your home to inspect and figure it out until before leaving your possession.
My personally?
I like to buy high and sell low. That;s been pretty much my motto.
