everywhere online all I can read is "if you have a 996 and unsure if the IMS was replaced, do it!" why shouldn't I?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello,
First of all I'm Portuguese and although my English is good, I apologise if I use any incorrect word.
I'm about to buy my First Porsche, a 996.1 Carrera 2, from 1998 with 80.000km in great shape.
Today I took it to a garage I trust (but not used to Porsches since I live on an island with no Porsche dealer) and he said it all looks great with two exceptions:
1. There's as oil leak on both sides of the engine, where he thinks it's only both valves cover gasket, does that makes sense?
2. The gearshift was making a clicking noise on idling, but he said the shifts look good when driving, any idea of what can it be?
3. I'm unsure if the IMS was replaced but it doesn't look like the screws were ever touched. If I buy it should I replace it anyway?
Please check the attached photos and video.
I'm thinking on using it as my daily driver and, to me, it's a dream but also a big investment, so what are your advises?
Also, since UK us out of EU it's very expensive to order from UK, so anyone knows an online store in the EU where I can order parts without customs ?
Thank you all!
1. gaskets age and leak with age, but any oil leaks on a 911 engine should be treated with care
2. gearbox clikc might be a gear that is loose or a failure with the TCM solenoid
3. get the IMS replaced as a precaution

top right, set the country to Portugal
Thanks but:
1. what do you mean with care? it's the gasket in your opinion?
2. but the noise is on idling without any gear on, and when driving feels good. what do you think it is?
3. will do.
For the parts, that site is based on UK and I will pay customs... lots of them.
In my opinion the need to replace the IMS bearing seems a little hasty. 98 carreras have the early dual row version and at 80k its either been replaced already or is not in need of changing unless the clutch needs changing...?
Leave the IMS alone - it is the best bearing on that variant (dual row bearing).
That leak needs more investigation - it looks to me like it may be the air oil separator that's leaking, or it could just be the variocam solenoid seal or something similar.
Does the gear noise on idling go away if the clutch is depressed?
yes it does. the mechanic said he this it is the valvet gaskets, you agree? because in leaks on both sides.
and leave the IMS alone? everywhere online all I can read is "if you have a 996 and unsure if the IMS was replaced, do it!" why shouldn't I?
Replacing the ims can do more harm than good. There is risk of damaging chain guides, etc. whilst doing it and there is no better replacement out there that can be fit in situ than what you already have. Best solution is to keep your original and remove the dust shield off the bearing so the engine oil lubricates it.
The 996 doesn't have valve gaskets. Sealant is used between the mating faces. There is also the spark plug tubes that leak from that area. Like I said, more investigation required. Best to wash the oil off, then run the car and inspect again.
As Alex has said, and to add some detail: Jack the rear of the car up, remove bothe rear wheels spray some engine de greaser where the oil leaks look worse and follow up with a severe jet washing.
Your car is quite old so there are bound to be oil staining of some sort. Following Alex's suggestion cleaning everything up underneath will expose any current fresh oil leaks.
Impossible to diagnose anything from photos , from what I can see it looks perfectly OK..if the oil leak is dripping you'll need to sort it out but if not just leave it and drive it. Forget the IMS bearing , pull the seal if you do a clutch.
Gear linkage noise could be anything, you need to get it back up on the lift and have a look with a good torch.
