I am not happy with the A/V options available in the Cayman (specifically, lack of bluetooth, ipod support and sat radio) and so I would potentially order just a plain old stereo and then rip it out and put in what I want. My question is, would a double din sized head unit fit? Specifically a unit that is 4 inches high and 7 inches wide. I am looking at the upcoming Pioneer AVIC-Z1. It has nicer navigation, built in bluetooth, ipod support and XM radio with their navtraffic service. Also, what about trim kits to fill up any opens spaces not covered by the new stereo?
I have no idea if it will fit properly, but sounds like a nice modification to try out and a nice unit.

It looks like some custom work may be needed. The following link has a boxster with the Pioneer radio installed

I installed the AVIC Z1 in My Toureag and it works very well. Making it look correct in the dash requires talented installers.
Ok on my way Orderd Pioneer Avic Z1 and JL 500/2 Amp..2 8' JBL Sub woofers which will go in the rear welled out areas with thin enclosures and set of 6.5 ' 3 way Focal speakers replace the crappy Bose and 2 more in the back to replace Bose. Getting Bluetooth option as well with Sirius Tweeter is installing whole job about 5500.00 installed. When I get it all in I will upload pics should be about 3-4 weeks
Cant wait to see the pics. I thought the Cayman was to difficult to get aftermarket audio installed.
Well we shall see they took a look and say should be ok they have already done a lot of Boxsters
We shall see soon enough
A guy over on ******** installed a double din unit...here's the link, hope it helps you out:

podman,
have you read '
How to kill a Cayman S
'?
Thanks guys I am going to do some more research before moving ahead. I will also get a guarantee from installer that if they screw it up they pay to have factory stuff reinstalled.
Sometimes it sucks to have a great affinity for audio. However, my stock M5 stereo totally kills this stereo and it was made 5 years ago.
good luck podman...if you move forward please document and share with us.
best, michael
Will do.....
PS 18 year old saw Gator today and I quote 'Holy ****'
I should know this week what is possible with swapping out the base stereo unit, etc. as we are going to take the car in to have the electronics analyzed for add-ons such as ipod, sat radio, etc. I will report back the findings after they are through going over my car. Nothing is getting changed at this point, it is merely a diagnostic check, checking voltages, wiring diagrams, connection points, etc.
