Gentleman who know all kinds of stuff: I disconnected my battery to install my new steering wheel on account of I didn't want an airbag explosion in my face.
Disconnecting the battery and that 60 sec ignition on (but not start the engine) routine do both the same thing - although disconnecting the battery for a longer period of time does it more completely.

Suggestion
If the engine runs a little poorly after a battery dissconnect , no big deal, just means the engine has changed a bit since new condition, and will adjust/trim to ideal conditions.
Leading evidence: 'Disconnect battery' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust /trim' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Funny, I had the battery disconnected for the same reason (airbag) while I replaced a window regulator.

If there's an issue with the car then it might be a different story as the ECU has adjusted some values to correct the values that the car needs to run properly and adjust to the driving style.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

If there's an issue with full throttle response at full RPM range there's some issue and certainly Durametric (or any other scanner that can read Porsche DME) would help in this case - check the actual values - esp.

Are you saying that disconnecting the battery loses the adaptation settings and that those settings were compensating 4 suboptimal conditions to approximate better air fuel mixture?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Still not getting Full Throttle response through the full RPM range.
Gentleman who know all kinds of stuff: I disconnected my battery to install my new steering wheel on account of I didn't want an airbag explosion in my face. The computer will need to relearn whatever it is it needs to relearn. What's that all about? is it necessary or myth?
Funny, I had the battery disconnected for the same reason (airbag) while I replaced a window regulator. Started it up for the first time a few days later and my heart sank when I was met with a rough idle and smoke out the back. Took a bit for me to remember why, and it cleared up after maybe 30 seconds.
Ooops. Started it up and it had a rough idle, hard to keep it lit without feathering the go pedal. Research shows the motor, (or, more correctly I), will need "adaptation". There's a key on, wait, key off process that adapts the oxygen sensors or something.
Disconnecting the battery and that 60 sec ignition on (but not start the engine) routine do both the same thing - although disconnecting the battery for a longer period of time does it more completely. They clear the fuel trims etc settings so you car goes to default settings which in normal situation should be ok.
If there's an issue with the car then it might be a different story as the ECU has adjusted some values to correct the values that the car needs to run properly and adjust to the driving style.
As far as I know "adaptation" needs reasonably amount of driving in different conditions (speed/rpm/load level) so a drive around the block is not enough - drive at least 50 miles.
So it's like DBJoe said - after disconnecting the battery just drive the car normally and you should be fine - if the car is otherwise fine. In other words you don't have to do anything anything special after disconnecting the battery.
If there's an issue with full throttle response at full RPM range there's some issue and certainly Durametric (or any other scanner that can read Porsche DME) would help in this case - check the actual values - esp. fuel trims, MAF.
Disconnecting the battery for a period of time will usually clear all memories and reset to factory settings.
This means one-touch window features, one-touch sun-roof feature, radio pre-sets, seat positions pre-sets , all will have to be re-done.
If the engine runs a little poorly after a battery dissconnect , no big deal, just means the engine has changed a bit since new condition, and will adjust/trim to ideal conditions. If the engine runs EXTREMELY poorly after a battery dissconnect, it means the engine has moved a long way from new and may need a few things re-freshed ( ie. clean the throttle body, clean the MAF sensor, clean the fuel injectors ect.)
A Software Flash can change anything the designer wants to change but they usually stick to changing the factory timing maps and fuel maps with sometimes turning off undesirable functions like SAI and post cat 02 sensors.
They normally don't change the self-learning functions.
Could this be used as a sort of diagnostic for things like MAF, injectors etc? If after a hard reset, everything started up and ran smooth, would that mean those items are likely at or very close to original factory parameters?
Yes, if after a reset it runs smooth with no hick-ups, you can assume everything is really close to factory parameters, although I wouldn't use this technique for diagnostics, ( there are better ways to diagnose) just consider it a symptom..
Hey, my Weber idle circuit main jet emulsifier air correction brain is kind of adapting to my 996 adapting process. Are you saying that disconnecting the battery loses the adaptation settings and that those settings were compensating 4 suboptimal conditions to approximate better air fuel mixture? And a vacuum leak is revealed, particularly with a cold engine, as the mixture 4 cold start up needs to be rich and that is difficult to achieve with air leaks and resulting lean fuel to air ratio?
