I'll be using new thread sealant for the 3 bolts and replacing both o-rings.

It is not required for rebuilds where we use a fresh bearing without seals.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm about to assess and if all goes well pull the IMS bearing grease shield and then button everything back up. However, after a preliminary clean up I noticed there's soft grey gasket sealant around the IMS flange bolts and under the flange 'ears' themselves. Is this common practice for a MY1999 996 from a factory installation standpoint or should I assume it has been opened up? I'm guessing this will be the early single o-ring flange, and if so I may replace it, or maybe reinstall in likewise fashion to how I've found it. Anyone clear on whether this is factory or even an accepted method? Much appreciated.

POST 2Original post

The bolts have to have sealant on, otherwise it'll leak oil. It's standard practice.

POST 3Original post

Bolts have thread lock on them , they don't have the sealant in the picture from new , this has been removed before .sealant on the bolts is a common garage practise .

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the quick replies, I was a little suspicious of how caked on the gasket material is. Have to see what surprises await behind the cover!

POST 5Original post

It's a very common leak point. IMHO more that the RMS. No doubt it was done at a clutch change.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Alex, do you know if your original flange was reinstalled? There are so many guides and posts on replacement parts and very little on assessment and reinstallation. I know these early dual row flanges have different dimensions which further complicates.

POST 8Original post

There is no gasket , IMS flange has a rubber O ring seal on the shaft and on the flange you remove ( triangle bit ). sealant looks like dri-bond .. an old porsche sealant that is no longer used . You need to be locking the crankshaft and preferably a camshaft before removing this plate .. or you are in trouble ! A sealant on the bolt threads after refitting is standard garage practise .

POST 9Original post

Mine was just reused both times I had a new clutch.

Thanks yes, the engine is pinned TDC and both cams locked and tensioners removed. I'll be using new thread sealant for the 3 bolts and replacing both o-rings. Just unclear if I will/should implement some of these garage practices.

POST 11Original post

Get plenty of sealant on the bolts or you'll be misted up on the bell housing in no time. Have you though of fitting one of the new design Hartech flanges that force oil in to the bearing?

Not until this moment, I'm located in Canada and though I know of the company and have read many Baz threads I did not know about this product. This may be a consideration if I get in there and it's the single rib o-ring. Thanks for the heads up!

POST 14Original post

Slakker do them in the USA: (Need to check if there's a suitable option for the 3.4 bearing) Hartech IMS Flange Hartech IMS flange for the non serviceable bearing. This product provides better splash oil flow to bearings that have had the front seal removed while in the engine. It is not required for rebuilds where we use a fresh bearing without seals. sr.dev

POST 15Original post

will the hartech flange fit with the original bearing shaft ? the hole looks too big to me.
