When my car was serviced they used 5w 50 Mobil 1 - but at home only have 5w 40 Mobil 1 oil lef tover from my Boxster.

Following a thread on here asking if the digital oil gauge or the dip stick was better in telling you the actual oil level, I decided to check my oil using the dip stick.

Suggestion

Better to have some oil in it than running low, i would suggest putting it in, all your doing is changing the viscosity slightly fron 50 to 40, it would probably be like 47 once mixed.

Dear friends. I need your help please. Following a thread on here asking if the digital oil gauge or the dip stick was better in telling you the actual oil level, I decided to check my oil using the dip stick. The in car display has always indicated a decent oil level, with it rarely being any lower than full. However, when i checked using the dipstick, it was showing minimum. I asked my local indie if they can sell me 5 litres of oil to use as top up, but they are closed until Monday. My daughter needs to be dropped of at Uni tomorrow morning which is a round trip of around 200 miles. When my car was serviced they used 5w 50 Mobil 1 - but at home only have 5w 40 Mobil 1 oil lef tover from my Boxster. Is it ok to add this to bring the dip stick level up a bit before the long trip tomorrow?

I wouldn’t see it being a huge issue using 5w40 as long as you drive the car sensibly. I’m sure someone with more technical knowledge will hopefully give you a more definitive answer soon though ..

It’s more important it’s the same brand / type than viscosity, so yes I’d say it’s ok to use. As others have said make sure you don’t over fill. Did you check when the car was cold and level?

Checking again this evening to be sure. Cold and level..... and the dip stick shows at the minimum mark. I topped up with les than a litre of my Boxster oil. Its just over minimum now. I will go and buy the correct grade of oil as soon as i can, but this should be enough to get me to Swansea and back, starting at 06:00 tomorrow. Thanks all.
