Also ran wire from passenger outlet to concealed display that I mounted on steering column.
Leading evidence: 'Run wire' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'only easily visible place' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace on the v1' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I dont have the concealed display but it can be used with the 'hardwire' install very easily.

Suspected cause
your placement above the steering wheel is probably the only easily visible place for the concealable optoin.

the concealed display uses velcro to attach on steering column and the cable follows the column into the driver's well and then behind the center console piece to plug into the passenger power outlet...
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

For 'temporary' installation a Valentine 1 or any wired radar detecter requires a plug connection to a cigarette lighter port. Which of our 3 ports are people plugging into? I think the one in the passenger footwell would be the the least inconvenient with rewpect to wire pathway... assuming the absence of a passenger.
For 'permanent' installation on the windshield to the right of the rear-view mirror, is it feasible to tap into the wiring within the mirror support or interior light? Shoould I be concerned about wear of the power jack (male end) from regular plugging and unplugging.
Should I entertain the use of a Solo 2 to avoid the power supply issue altogether?
mkatz,
Do a search of 'radar' or 'Valentine 1' and you will find several threads that might give you the information you need. These topics have been thoroughly discussed here.

I sent in my old V1 for updating, got it back yesterday, and installed it last night. Smooth and easy compared to my '99 Boxster. Mounted main unit to passenger visor (for easier removal), tucked cord into window trim, and plugged into passenger footwell outlet. Also ran wire from passenger outlet to concealed display that I mounted on steering column. It is quite easy to conceal all the cables except for where they actually attach to the units. Now to see if I can find a cop when I need one (to test it out, lol).
Got any pictures yet Karl? We haven't seen it installed in that place on a Cayman with wires tucked away.
What did your update change on the V1? It's nice they offer that.
Karl; sounds like a pretty easy install. Post pics when you get a chance ok? I am looking at perm mounting mine but haven't even been using it alot lately.
just finished my radar install. I dont have the concealed display but it can be used with the 'hardwire' install very easily. The beauty of not using either the lighter socket or the 12 V in the passenger area, is that you wont have to worry about turning off your detector and draining your battery. As soon as K-Man S gets back to me, I will either post the directions in the forum on a thread or in the Articles section.
I traced the cable route in yellow... tucks in easily behind trim and just barely shows at base of window pillar... I haven't completed tucking it up in the passenger well so you can see it dangling for now... the concealed display uses velcro to attach on steering column and the cable follows the column into the driver's well and then behind the center console piece to plug into the passenger power outlet... no bogies to or from work so didn't get to test it out... I think they added Ka band and all new hardware in the upgrade
RedRocket:
I'd like to hardwire mine also, so awaiting your instructions... I was just in a hurry to get it up and running to prevent any bogey attacks!!! I like the visor mount, rather than windshield, because I think it will be easier and faster to remove the unit if I ever get pulled over and when parking the car when theft risk is high.
Karl, it is less noticable when on the visor. your placement above the steering wheel is probably the only easily visible place for the concealable optoin. I looked around to see if there were somewhere in the dash it would fit and still look svelt..no place i could find.
The keys I have found is mounting the detector as high as you can (anybody try the roof yet?!) and making sure the display is visible,... unless you can hear it above the whine of the engine and blare of the stereo.
Could anybody give me some advice on the best radar detector to purchase. I can't keep the car under 100mph on the open road and I do not want to take any more chances
ohh boyy.....your about to open a can of worms.....the kind with razor sharp teeth. Do a search on this board and other forums and I am sure you will find one that suits your needs.
cheers..../fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/MWPX/beer2.gif
Frankie, there is absolutely NO perfect way to avoid a ticket from 'instant-on' units, unless you drive below the speed limit. And that is not hardly possible with normal automobiles, which the Cayman is NOT.! We use a V1, a common 'accessory'' for all our Porsche friends. Someone should write a book about avoiding 'tickets', perhaps something like 'Avoiding traffic tickets for dummies', or something. if someone knows of such a publication, please pass the word. There are a lot of 'tricks' about driving to avoid speeding tickets, and these could be assembled, e.g. using large trucks as a barrier, passing only when a roadway barrier exists, etc, driving with the flow (that does not work sometimes if you are in a Porsche or especially a red Porsche Cayman S. ;-)
I was going to have my brother in law drive up the parkway ahead of me in the middle of the day to scan for bogies and then I was going to see what this car can really do. I think that might be one of the only ways to avoid the ticket and even then you still have to worry about the heli's in the sky.
The only way to safely see what the car can do is on a race track. I'm sure there are plenty of options close by that are a lot cheaper than even getting *one* ticket and are infinitely safer than being a maniac on a public street.
That said, I have a radar detector and would only use a Valentine 1.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt">Has anyone thought about mounting V1 in back of their Cayman.
One is on the handle bar of the rear deck.
The other alternative is to mount high under the back of the roof a few inches in front the hatch.
Both can be easily concealed with some sort of cover (plastic or ABS material).
The roof option is a bit harder, you need to pull the lining off and mount a support for the detector.
I am thinking about using a high mount brake light cover that found in many other autos to conceal the unit.
The wiring can be easily threaded through the pillar.
Conrad,
Honestly those are good suggestions! Valentine stress's the improtance of mounting it high and in the front window, soI am not sure if there is going to be some kind of problem with putting more towards the rear of the car. As long as you have the concealed display where you can see it I can't see why there would be a problem?
I will look forward to others input. I an new to the V1and not the best source of information.
Russ
I don't know that I'd mount the unit back in the car rather than up high on the windshield... in my experience, 90% of the hits I get are from the front, so I don't think it would be as effective toward the front further back toward the back window.
brad
I agree with beez, and also the biggest loss of radar is from the windshield glass. I think closer to the front would help with the refraction of light lost in the windshield (the primary target) - but I'm no optics specialist.
The best place is outside the car for sensors - but the companies that do that still haven't proven better results than the V1
