Similar to failure-prone ball bearings, when cylindrical roller bearings are used for thrust control, the roller becomes compromised due to the limited surface contact area on the sides of the rollers.

If the bearing is shot at, then replace with a like for like standard sealed ball bearing but remove the dust shields so that it's lubricated with the engine oil.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've stated this on a few threads over the last few years about the cylindrical roller type IMS bearing replacements not being fit for purpose due to them nor being able to withstand any axial load (sideways), only radial load.
I've seen various comments from Hartech in the past stating the same issue..
Anyway, I've seen another reputable specialist-Sports & Classic Ltd - saying the same thing:
What is the ‘optimal’ solution then? Is it the regular bearing but with the dust shields removed?
Forgive me for asking, I know there is a pinned thread about this but I don’t fancy wading through 303 messages to find out
The best solution is the last revision Porsche did on the 997 which was a much larger bearing. Downside is you can only fit this by stripping the engine. Next best option that Hartech recommended and I'm in agreement with them, is to stick with the original and when you can get access to it, remove the outer dust shield of the bearing so that the engine oil can lubricate it and also check that it's in good condition and no play. If the bearing is shot at, then replace with a like for like standard sealed ball bearing but remove the dust shields so that it's lubricated with the engine oil.
I'd only ever extract that bearing out the side of the engine case if it was absolutely necessary, as the risk involved doing it is far greater that the original failing.
RPM Technik, a well respected Porsche specialist, fit EPS cylindrical bearing as an upgrade.

Could other factors such as poor maintenance over revs and or general misuse cause the small numbers of issues seen?
Mine is an EPS and looked fine when I last checked it. This subject is like Marmite, You'll always find someone slagging off one solution and bigging up another. They have been widely used for years by some long standing and well respected Porsche specialist and this is the first I've heard people doubting them.
To my eyes, that's not been installed correctly and is sitting proud. Also, it's worn, not failed and no mention of age or mileage. The IMS thing has been done to death and this sort of scare story is what made it such an issue in the first place.
EPS disagree with you.

WHAT MAKES OUR SOLUTION DIFFERENT?
Roller bearings are not intended for carrying large axial loads. Similar to failure-prone ball bearings, when cylindrical roller bearings are used for thrust control, the roller becomes compromised due to the limited surface contact area on the sides of the rollers. The results of using a cylindrical bearing for thrust control will be similar to all other ball bearing solutions.
In our
patented
system, we use a 15mm cylindrical bearing with thrust control that allows for the separation of the axial load from the radial load. Our roller bearings do NOT carry the axis load (thrust control) on the side, which leaves the roller free to carry only the radial load (main load). The axial load is carried exclusively on the entire permitter of the outer race. This results in a bearing that is not overloaded and
will last the lifetime of the engine
. "
That's why they're using a bearing not fit for purpose.
Sports & Classic have given a perfect explanation of why it isn't in the above post and this photo shows the result. Imagine all those particles shaved off the cover plate swilling round your engine:
I have the same this than this post with an IMS EPS (the case after opening was rubber)and mine didn’t even done 1000 miles. It was Installed in a reputable Porsche specialist. They have now my old shaft with the bearing to send to the brand. Long story short this may cause my engine needed a rebuild as this bearing was leaking oil constantly.
