Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The big improvement came when I installed the Numeric cables.
Leading evidence: 'Install numeric cables' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust stick' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

So instead, I have been using the same Oem shifter over the years on and off the track and it has worked just fine and spend the money somewhere else on the car.

Daniel, can you also adjust the stick to sit higher or lower as well?

the alignment tool is that green plastic thingy that locks the shifter in neutral and central position before you disconnect the two shifter cables.

The other benefit of numeric is you can change the throw to 3 different settings from normal to medium short to really short.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It looks like I can either get a Porsche brand for over $500, or one from Pelican and others for less than $200. Anybody have experience with the less-expensive ones?
Also, a nice acquaintance has offered to install the shifter and mentioned a special tool needed to align the shifter. From what little I've read, the install takes an hour and no mention of aligning anything. Again, anybody BTDT that can offer advice?
I started out with a "less expensive" Schnell kit. Worked fine for about 5 months, the throw was pretty tight which I liked, but reverse was sometimes hard to tell if it was engaged properly. After 5 months I was accelerating on an on ramp, going from 2nd to 3rd and the cable popped out of the housing. Thankfully had enough momentum to coast into a truck stop. Didn't have tools so had to get it towed 10 minutes back to the garage. I ended up taking it out and swapped in a 997 shifter and like it more than stock. The throw is a little shorter, but overall feels much smoother.
Not sure about an alignment tool that's needed. I just marked the cable position with a black permanent marker and dropped them in the new connectors at the same spot and it feels natural as OEM. There may be a tool, but it's not necessary for a standard swap.
the alignment tool is that green plastic thingy that locks the shifter in neutral and central position before you disconnect the two shifter cables. However people here have mentioned that it is unnecessary.
Mine came with a cheap short shifter. Felt very nice. Slightly notchy going into first when cold, but that went away after a minute or two. Tried a 997 shifter and it felt too sloppy after having the short shifter and I immediately took it off. Upgraded to a Numeric and it's perfect plus has three settings. Zero notchiness under any condition. I can swap a shifter console in 30 minutes or less. You do not need the aligning tool. You can make micro adjustments to line it up very easily. The tool isn't necessary at all.
how much is the Numeric? Mine came with the GT3 and I like it better than the stock shifter from my last 996, but something less notchy would be an improvement.
I've had the stock 996 shifter, the 997 shifter and now I use one of the blue B&M shifters that you can find pretty cheap. A little notchy when cold but definitely my favourite of all the options. The stock shift throw in 986 / 996 is horrible, don't know how anyone could enjoy it. Recently got a function first delrin shift **** that completes the whole package, really enjoy the shift feel now.
I was very happy with Ben's ball-bearing short shifter - much superior to the original.
Then I was given a Numeric shifter & cables. The shifter alone was very good - though actually about the same as Ben's.
The big improvement came when I installed the Numeric cables. As a project, it's a bit of a nuisance - but it sure makes a difference.
IMHO. Stick with an OEM Porsche product. Mine is a 997 short shifter. Works great and i love it. No need for a special alignment tool. Alignment is by eye. Very easy..
The big difference with the CAE is the look... Not everyone wants the look of a race car in the cabin. Part of the beauty of the Numeric is that you dont know its there until you operate it...
You bring up the million dollar point which many of us have been wrestling with. I like the industrial strength precision of the CAE as well as the look of it. Very cool. But do I want to transform my car into a race car inside and out, or can I get the same precision with the Numeric without the race car look.
The only way to answer the above question is to try both first-hand. Haven't tried either yet nor do I know anyone that has. So instead, I have been using the same Oem shifter over the years on and off the track and it has worked just fine and spend the money somewhere else on the car.
Sure. I was merely countering the nothing comes close to numeric statement. From a functional standpoint - it’s inaccurate.
I don’t give a **** what it looks like - I happen to think it looks cool but the function, the function is what makes it great.
My bet is that Numeric is not as precise from a functionality standpoint as the CAE. Your videos show the precision. Havent seen any Numeric videos that in any way compare. I always felt that a short shift kit was a waste of money unless you could get adequate precision in shifting. Shortening the throw isn't precision. It's just shortening the throw. Numeric was making the rounds and it took it to the next level for a street car. But it looks like CAE went even further. Hopefully someone viewing this has tried them both for an honest assessment on the street and track.
As the "re-imagined 996" world starts to expand, and ideas propagate on the 996, just like they did with restoring and modifying the 964 and 993, I suspect we are going to see more of the CAE shifter inside of the cabin in one way shape or form.
I am also very happy with numeric. I'm not sure how more "precise" you could get in shift feel and function but i don't have any experience with CAE. The other benefit of numeric is you can change the throw to 3 different settings from normal to medium short to really short. I run mine in the medium setting
It is a very cool looking piece of machinery and it looks good with a graphite gray interior. Thanks for the picture.
At this stage my wife and daughter don't like the 996 since I put in the GT3 seats. My son loves the seats. So at this stage, it really won't matter if I go industrial strength or not with the shifter. I did teach my daughter how to drive stick in it, but she did it when I had a racing clutch and it was either in or out. She was miserable but figured it out.
Suffice to say, my son gets the car when I can't get in and out of it in 30 years. He would like the CAE shifter.
