Well I bought a clean
06 Cayman S
and I'm 99% positive it's got the dreaded bore scoring. I got the car cheap so I'm not too disappointed.
Here's the question I have a complete 986s that's a little beat up but the motor runs great. Anyone know ìf it's reasonably possible to swap the 3.2 in the
Cayman
. Not worried about the power loss and I can do so the work myself
Practical? Probably not. The electronics would be the issue. The 987 is one generation newer electronics than the
986
, and lots of things that were not controlled on the
986
are controlled by the ECU in the 987. The ECU's aren't a swap and play sort of thing, it's major wiring modifications to even think about using the
986
ECU with a 987.
Sorry - practical? Nope.
I think you're thinking about this wrong. I want to strip the 03 986s engine down to the just the long block. Then install all the 06 987s accessories on 03 986s block. If I'm not mistaken the only difference is how the cam timing is operated.
The 987's electronic throttle body is certainly also different.. and it's not only cam timing - starting with Variocam PLUS - the system not only alters the timing of the cams, it alters the lift (that's the "plus" part).. I have no idea how the ECU would handle that, but can only imagine not too well.. I think you'd need someone quite skilled to take the timing map from the
986
ECU and plant it into the 987 ECU so the 987 ECU isn't expecting cam-lift values. I'd also want to figure out if the cam lift/timing on the
986
camshaft is the same as on the 987 camshaft...
Lots of puzzles there to figure out.
I do know someone that's done the swap I'll have to consult with him. I think the only concern is the variocam plus. I'm praying my motors isn't bad and I don't have to do this 🤷🏾
Just a thought here. Have you considered looking into sleeves and pistons? It sounds like you’re already going deep into the project, and it looks like they do have that available for the engine series you have, that way you maintain all the rest of the engine.
Yup I'm already planning for the deep dive if this motor is bad 😟. I have someone interested in the
Boxster S
I have so that will fund a good portion of the rebuild
I will be interested on your progress. I hope you take a lot of photos. I don’t think I would be confident in disassembling a
Porsche
engine myself and I hope I never have to, but I must say I salute your endeavor and wish that I had that kind of mechanical ability with an engine like ours. I’m pretty confident I could do a VW if somebody else lifted it in and out of the car and onto the bench. 😎
I hope it doesn't come to that I'll be checking the aos and bores tomorrow after work..... Wish me luck 🤣🤣🤣
Well bought a man o meter on
Amazon
and tested the AOS at operating temp got 4.39 inches of water. Unfortunately I think that's a good number and not the cause of the smoke at start up. Started checking for bore scoring but couldn't finish because my shop closes at 7 and my scope really isn't good enough anyway. Going to take it to Powertect in Rockaway NJ on the 29th for a better look at the cylinders. Thankfully my buddy works there and it's literally behind where I work. I pray it's not scored but I know it is lol. If it's bad I'll start a build thread if anyone is interested
Definitely hope you don't find scoring.. but if you're doing a build - a thread on it would be great!
My 06
Boxster S
3.2L with ecu and all associated security modules is still available...
I think I figured it out. You need to use the
Boxster S
engine from years 05/06 280hp 335tq and can be bought for around 6k. Best part no bore score problems!. Off to the wiring diagrams
