Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Before I start stripping off the front bumper and taking a look at what I need to replace, any one got any pointers. The thread that the tow eye goes into on the front is cross threaded / missing the 1st turn as I discovered during my recent break down when the tow eye could not be fitted... thanks Damo

POST 2Original post

Can you not use the towing eye (steel) to clean up the thread in the car which is aluminium? If that doesn't work, or to much of the thread is missing, then the towing eye screws into the bumper support beam which are not extensive on ebay. Also if you take the bumper off then remove the bumper bar you could get it in a vice which would make it easier to clean up the thread. I know what thread it is. Leave it with me, I'll have a dig round.

POST 5Original post

It's known as a knuckle thread. Spec is DIN 405, OD 20.318mm ID 16.825mm with a pitch of 3.175mm. Isn't it a LH thread too? You are winding it the right way aren't you? Your best option is to get a redundant towing eye with the same thread. Get a hacksaw or angle grinder and cut some slots around the front edge. The slots created then act as a cutting face so you've replicated what a tap does. When you wind the towing eye in it should cut out and material that's in the way. Similat to this:
