Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Thanks for the thought, but you still either need to drill and tap the heads to fit the different bolt pattern, create an adapter plate, or add the aluminum lower intake tubes which would then require lowering the engine 1.5-2" which I don't want to do since I'll be running a deep sump plate and that's already dangerously low.

And for those that don't know, the M96 uses a lower intake that is made of aluminum that bolts to the block and then the plastic intake (aka "spider") bolts to that.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I've got an '07 CS with a blown motor. I've located a race-built M96 motor from a 996 for a good price. Does anyone have any experience doing this swap? If so, I'd love to connect with them to find out what exactly is needed for the swap. Yes, I've read the Pelican article about a Boxster swap, but it's not quite the same. Some of the specifics I'm hung up on are: oil pump - do they need to be swapped? oil and cooling lines, do these need to be swapped exhaust system, can you use the 996 exhaust wiring harness, can you keep the stock Cayman harness In short, I've ready that a same-year or newer swap with an M97 is pretty straightforward plug and play, but is this going to be a 100-hour guessing game?

POST 2Original post

Considering the engine is turned around 180 degrees I would guess the oil and cooling lines would need to be swapped over, same with the exhaust.

POST 3Original post

Welcome to P9, cool project you have in mind. From the reddit thread , u/fluffymufflerzzz says: Depending on your budget when I was trawling Yahoo Auctions Japan I found a 996 GT3 Cup motor for sale for around $12k USD before import. If you want to pursue that I can share the link to it with you too. Definitely keep us updated and help populate P9 with your swap information for other folks too!

POST 4Original post

Hi - thanks for the reply. I've seen the Reddit thread and was going to reach out. I can't believe nobody has documented this swap before. I'll pass on the GT3 as I'm in California and would have to deal with smog stuff. I appreciate the interested, though.

POST 5Original post

That's so odd that nobody has. Please do start a technical thread so we can all follow along! I think my motor will probably be a candidate for a Slakker 3.8 or 4.1L rebuild. I know that Brandon Clark (from Slakker) is highly responsive and helpful on the Porsche Engine Gurus facebook group. I'm also in CA, our SMOG is a pain. If you're in SoCal and want a hand wrenching do reach out, I'd be happy to come help out.

POST 7Original post

why don't you pm me and i will explain a few things on this engine swap you might be interested in BTW i have and 06 997 that is almost complete converted to go in to a Boxster that might be for sale

POST 8Original post

HI - sorry, but although I've lurked on this site for the past few years, I've only just registered recently and don't have the minimum # of posts yet to be able to PM. Is there any way you can try to PM me? OR,post things here in this thread? Maybe, I could ask some questions that you reply to in order to get to the requirement of 10 posts before PMing? Thanks

POST 10Original post

So I learned one challenging thing today about this swap... the 987 intake manifold mounting holes are not in the same place as the M96 mounting holes. To make this work, you'd either have to use the M96 intake, or make an adapter plate. And for those that don't know, the M96 uses a lower intake that is made of aluminum that bolts to the block and then the plastic intake (aka "spider") bolts to that. The M97 intake is only plastic and bolts directly to the block.

POST 11Original post

Sounds like you could use the 987 Boxster S (05 or 06) plenum. Thats an M96 3.2.

POST 12Original post

Thanks for the thought, but you still either need to drill and tap the heads to fit the different bolt pattern, create an adapter plate, or add the aluminum lower intake tubes which would then require lowering the engine 1.5-2" which I don't want to do since I'll be running a deep sump plate and that's already dangerously low.
