Yes did a bit of reading on this last night, I think my hinge was fitted to the 996, but they have a propensity for breaking, so a lot have been replaced with the 997 part.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I’ve just treated my 996 to a new fuel filler cap as the existing one was looking a bit tired and had the usual broken rubber strap issue. I’ve gone through various posts on the topic and watched several YouTube videos, but I’m struggling to attach the rubber strap to the car. The end which attaches was missing on the old cap so I don’t have any real physical reference, but there was a small piece of what looked like plastic rivet still in the hole at the bottom of the picture, so I’m pretty sure it’s the right one - it also seems to match the other pics/videos I’ve seen. The issue I’m having is that there’s no clearance between the hole and the hinge (in fact the hinge even covers the hole slightly) so I can’t line the hole in the strap up with the hole in the car - even without the rubber in the way I can’t seem to get the new plastic rivet in. Am I missing a trick?

Bit of info in this thread W Thread 'Fuel cap tether' 30 Jan 2020 My existing fuel cap on my '99 C2 doesn't have a tether strap so I purchased a replacement porsche item with a tether thinking it would be a straight swap. I've come to fit the new cap and there is no obvious point to fix the tether strap to (I bought the little plastic rivet too). I've tried the hole behind the hinge spring but the fuel flap won't close fully. Is my car just not meant to have a cap with tether? wellsy Replies: 11 Forum: Porsche 911 996 (1997-2005)

Thanks - I had seen that thread and I guess mounting it in that middle hole could be an alternative, but I’m a bit confused as mine does have a hole in (roughly) the right place unlike that thread. One thing I did notice is that their hinge seems to have narrower sides than mine - I reckon if I had that design then my hole would work. From what I can see though the hinge I have is the correct part number for my car so it’s a bit of a mystery…

POST 4Original post

Here's the hinge on my 04, the hinge is definitely narrower like you said, don't know if you could remove a bit of plastic on your hinge to give clearance. Or order a hinge like mine and see if it fits. Alternatively you could drill a new hole above the hinge, or mount it on the back side of the middle hole. Still a bit of a mystery how it appears to have been in the bottom hole originally!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the picture - mine is an 04 as well, wonder why they’re different. Would you mind grabbing the part number from yours if it’s visible?

POST 6Original post

From what I could see it didn't seem to have a part number in the usual Porsche format, and I'm not sure if that's a BMW symbol on mine?! I'd have a look on ebay

POST 7Original post

My C4S had the older style hinge, like Mac996t, complete with BMW style logos on it. It broke last month and I ordered a replacement from my local Porsche dealer. They're now selling a much stronger hinge with a 997 part number that looks a lot like the one in Subtledee's photo. I also had issues fitting the cord - I had to put it back to front under the hinge, I'll try and get a photo tonight. I would guess that you've had the hinge replaced and that's why it's not making any sense!

POST 8Original post

Yes did a bit of reading on this last night, I think my hinge was fitted to the 996, but they have a propensity for breaking, so a lot have been replaced with the 997 part. This part is larger and partly covers the hole for the cap. Either that or SubtleDee's car is a cut and shut made from 4 separate cars welded together

POST 9Original post

I reckon going forward this is going to be the thing that 996's are judged by when they are sold. Only a very few will be able to claim their car as an "original fuel flap hinge car" and these cars will be worth thousands more than 997 hinged cars lol

Hopefully not Checked with my mate who has a 986 and he has the same “narrow” hinge with a part number of 1970450. This seems to mainly come back as being for a BMW (full part number 51171970450) which would make sense given the logos on both of yours. Debating whether to order one and give it a go or just bodge what I’ve got somehow…
