Suggestion

When Hartech rebuild them, the use stronger better parts with greater longevity and do various other improvements to the engine, so I'd say you can probably extend that 100k figure on one of their rebuilds.

I'm looking for a 996, Tiptronic (don't shoot me please) car, and have seen a few with Hartech rebuilds all done around 2010ish or maybe older. Does that matter? I guess with, theoretically, so few done compared to how many 996's sold the numbers might not be there to determine longevity, but is it a major positive (ie less chance of failure compared to a standard engine) in 2024 that say 50,000 miles ago a car had an engine rebuild? Has the process changed since 2010 and therefore a more recent rebuild is more desirable? Or one that was done at 84k and now has 118k on it, but was still over 10 years ago? Yes, the 50k car has put (in theory) 50k on a Hartech engine without issue. There are some nice cars in my (ideal) budget with engine rebuilds, or there are cars over that with more recent builds that I am trying to work out if they are worth it. Not to mention the cars with non-Hartech rebuilds. Or am I far to fixated on it? I had a 986 S for a year and it never gave me a problem, but I almost felt a sense of relief when I sold it that it hadn't gone bang on me.

POST 2Original post

On a 996 engine, you're looking at around 100k and you're getting into borrowed time. When Hartech rebuild them, the use stronger better parts with greater longevity and do various other improvements to the engine, so I'd say you can probably extend that 100k figure on one of their rebuilds. Over time though, they've constantly (and still are) improve the components they use, so the later the rebuild, the more likely 'better & stronger' it will be. Personally I wouldn't be interested in a non Hartech rebuilt engine. Seen to many horror stories with inferior parts, etc.

POST 3Original post

I think there are a lot of scare stories and it's exaggerated, however, if I had the choice between a Hartech full rebuild car and a non-Hartech rebuild car and the difference in price was less the cost of the rebuild, then it's a no-brainer to take the rebuilt one. I bought a 996 as a project car with a knackered engine, before my ownership it was rebuilt at 60k miles by a very well known Indy that is considered one of the best in the UK, it was then checked 25k miles later during a PPI and confirmed zero bore score by another very well known Indy that a lot on here give favourable reviews of, and then a few hundred miles later it miraculously had catastrophic bore score that needed the engine out again and needs a full rebuild. I bought it cheap at that point. Hartech were not involved in any of the above, it was other very well known Indys. I'm having it rebuilt by the Porsche Indy that does all the work on my cars as part of a larger upgrade full car rebuild package (not Hartech) so I'll see what happens, but as I do a couple of thousand miles a year max it'll probably be over a decade before I find out whether it's going to repeat itself. I think there are some places better than others for sure, but everyone is basically winging it, with the amount of miles these cars do I don't think there is a big enough sample size to accurately predict who's rebuilds will be still in perfect condition 60k miles and two decades later. I only really know what I've read though and to be fair Hartech do seem to be the ones putting most effort into trying to get to that point though.

POST 4Original post

Thought there might be interest in this 996 vid, all be it US based content thus providing an alternative view on aspects of 996 buying and initial ownership experience. Buying in at circa 80k miles.... Interesting...?

If the price is right then i'd be completely fine with it. My engine has been done by Autofarm, some 40k miles and 10 years ago. I feel more comfortable about that than a none rebuilt one on 85k, thats for sure!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is all helpful, thank you! I am finding things are a bit all over the place pricing wise which is adding to confusion. For example, I posted this to PH - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/27659614...teid=0&campid=&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1 (don't look at the bottom of the invoices..lol) It is very cheap, too cheap since it has apparently had an engine build 3000 miles ago for about £10k! Yes, it apparently has a roof issue, but it is oddly priced. I smell scam or something hidden, but who knows? And then there is this - https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/17185792 which is lovely, ticks many of my boxes (although I would really like a targa) but had its engine build in 2006. Definitely nicer than the car above, a much older build etc. This is a targa (with issues), but had an engine build in 2013 - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202405290180225 And has been listed for AGES, but is 20 miles from where I live, which is a huge bonus. I was also re-browsing Autotrader today, and I have no idea how I missed this (possibly because I am not looking for a 997) - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202405059405728 Cheapest 997 without a blown engine? I'm not jumping on anything at the moment, but am I right that pricing is just odd?

There's always a range of asking prices for apparently similar cars - especially if you compare auction/ebay prices with private or dealer sales in the classifieds. The key is to build up your own personal database of what's being asked for what. For an effective comparison you'd really need to include mileage, service history and current condition (bodywork and consumables). Some of this can be done from adverts but speaking with sellers and viewing cars makes it more accurate. You'll quickly be able to cast aside those that are obviously well over-priced and be able to establish which are cheap. The situation you then have is to ponder why they are so cheap. I'm definitely in the camp of those that would only be looking at cars that have had a rebuilt engine (especially by Hartech) and would be prepared to pay a premium if it had been done within the last 20k miles.

POST 8Original post

You'll burn your head out comparing stuff, and then even worse if you buy something and then keep checking the market you'll burn your head out even more seeing what you could have bought if you'd waited There was someone on a Facebook group selling a 997 really cheaply because he's leaving to work abroad and yesterday another guy saying he thinks his 997 has bore score but he's got too many cars and simply can't be bothered throwing more money at it, he wanted £11k so you'd get it for ten, he'd previously spent loads on it, if I was in the UK I'd have bought it and put it on Hartechs waiting list, even if you throw £20k at it you'd have a superb car. I'd put a link but I'd have to search and you need to be in the group anyway, I'll see if I can screen shot it...

If I didn't already have a super nice 997 Tip I'd consider something like this and as I said, put it on Hartechs list and throw £20k at it, then if all else checks out you'd have a bulletproof car for a long time, you've spent £30k but if it's genuine then you'd get a couple of decades and tens of thousands of miles out of it and probably not have to spend much.

AAhh, that is very helpful, thanks!

POST 12Original post

Having looked at a lot of 996s up for sale over the last few years my thoughts on the cheap ones is that they are almost always dogs. Some times the dogginess is obvious upon physical visual inspection (ie cosmetics). Sometimes it’s a nasty mechanical issue (or collection thereof) just waiting for someone else to spend £5k on fixing it. It’s easy to get caught up on the engine on these, but if the car has got serious rot that’s going to be almost as much to put right, and that’s before you even get to suspension, clutch, brake, coolant & AC lines. The list really does go on. I’d go as far to say you should steer clear of any car that doesn’t have at least £10k of invoices for work done in the last few years, irrespective of the number or frequency of stamps in the book. The top of the market (high teens/early twenties depending on model) offers much better value than the bottom of the market if you actually want to drive a nice, sorted car. (That is to say it’ll cost you more than the difference to sort out a dog).

100% agree, see my rusty 996 rebuild thread for a cheap dog that's been turned around but at great expense. I'm now past turbo values and approaching GT3 money on my costs including the purchase price on my rebuild

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Whatever car I do buy will definitely get a proper PPI, no matter where it is in the market re price. Clearly though the cheap ones with alleged engine rebuilds are going to be eye catching. Funnily enough I did inquire about a car that listed a full engine and gearbox rebuild recently along with many, many invoices easily totaling more than 10k. Unfortunately that engine rebuild turned out to have been some head work - both removed, one welded, both pressure tested and refitted. It otherwise looked like a decent car, but that was slightly disappointing and the seller pulled the ad when I pointed it out (politely).
