I know the later 996.2 car just used double sided 3M tape to affix along the top edge but I'm struggling to find any pictures or definitive information on the retaining strip element of the early cars.

I know my side skirts were retrofitted by a previous owner and they are genuine Porsche, but I guess whomever never went as far as sourcing the full mounting kit and just used the drop tab as the mounting for the 3M tape against the body.

My skirts are off currently while I've been checking the sills so I'll need to refit them.

The instructions are to fill the void with epoxy, then slot the skirt down into the slot.

Does anyone have any direct, first had experience of removing early skirts that use the retaining strip who can guide me on how to tackle this without breaking damaging anything because these are stuck solid.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone removed the side skirts from a 996.1 who can confirm how they are attached to the retaining strip?
I know the later 996.2 car just used double sided 3M tape to affix along the top edge but I'm struggling to find any pictures or definitive information on the retaining strip element of the early cars.
Some say foam tape, yet I've read that they might be bonded on with epoxy?
I've removed all the screws and clips and they kind of hinge outwards without too much effort, but they absolutely will not budge even in the slighted along the top edge, or at least a little down from the top edge where the retaining strip is. I can get a credit card down the very thin cap greated to try and feel for foam tape, but it bottom out firm against the retaining strip.
I've tried a hair dryer to soften the bond on any tape that might be used, but this feels way more solidly attached that tape. I'm confident that if I pull or pry hard enough I'll just snap or crack the skirts which is the last thing I want to do.

EDIT: It's been confirmed to me they were bonded on with an epoxy on early cars. I can;t be the first person in the world to try to remove them, is there a prescribed method?
The trouble is you never know if they've been removed before so they could be stuck down by any method. I guess there's a good chance they'll crack if glued down.
I removed mine once and they were bonded at the top with a foam strip, it didn't offer much resistance so it may not have been the OE tape.
Could you try the dental floss technique as you may if you were removing a badge? I.e. by threading it in from one end vertically, pulling it taut against the sill whilst using a sawing action holding from above and below the skirt?
I was hoping that would be a useable technique, but another forum member posted pictures of the actual attachment method which would thwart this technique.
The inner top edge of the skirt slots down into this void on the retaining strip which is firmly attached to the sill. The instructions are to fill the void with epoxy, then slot the skirt down into the slot.
I can't see them coming off without destruction, so can stay happily married for all eternity.
I have retrofitted the GT3 Sideskirts on my car. The forum said that you should attach them with 3M foam tape. But that simply doesn't work because there is too much leverage on the adhesive area. The adhesive will always come off.
That's why I fit my sills the way they are designed ex works.
If your sills are original and you can't see any tape between the Sideskirt and the car, then you just have to unscrew all the screws and push them upwards. I would perhaps help with a little penetrating oil.
Mine are bonded on with epoxy as per the instructions. If I peep down the very thin gap, I can see where it has oozed out a touch from the end of the retaining strip.
There’s no lifting these out from what I can see.
That's interesting to see, mine didn't have that body mount fitted.
This thread may not have provided any answers yet on how to get yours off but it's enlightening to see how they should fit correctly so you've helped me out, I assumed the factory method was just the tape so I hadn't investigated it any further, thanks for the input
From your experience I'll give the epoxy a miss though, looks like silicone would be a better option to keep the top edge seated and still be removable.
