I left the battery connected as ignition switch is involved in stopping alarm when you disconnect and I didn’t know what would happen disconnecting ignition switch.

I found it as I was about to disconnect the negative to remove the starter - so lots of effort saved and a good lesson on how tight these connections need to be.

Hi everyone - was convinced my ignition housing had failed (key hard to get in and remove, stiff to turn, had to manually return to ‘run’ position after starting, ‘key in ignition’ warning remains when key (finally) removed, steering lock not engaging).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone - was convinced my ignition housing had failed (key hard to get in and remove, stiff to turn, had to manually return to ‘run’ position after starting, ‘key in ignition’ warning remains when key (finally) removed, steering lock not engaging). So was looking at £700 job at Porsche or indie. Then searched here and other sites and saw could just be the switch (£17 inc next day postage) - swapped the electrical switch for a Meyle one and all fixed. I never realised so much happened in the electric switch - allows key in, key out, spring back from starter position. I went in via air vent and also from underneath - however no contortion skills needed to get my head underneath as on the RHD car the grub screws face upwards. I undid them with a small 3mm screwdriver. Took about 20 mins from start to removal, and same for installation and getting everything back together. I left the battery connected as ignition switch is involved in stopping alarm when you disconnect and I didn’t know what would happen disconnecting ignition switch. Live connectors are all embedded in socket. Some pics to show how I could reach in via vent and also from underneath. Annoyingly the occasional ‘dead-man’s click’ from the starter solenoid is still there so that’s the next project.

POST 3Original post

Agreed, one of those jobs that wasn’t as bad as expected even with a damaged right wrist.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And the occasional ‘click’ failed start was down to tightness of battery negative terminal. It was already tight but needed to be really tight. I found it as I was about to disconnect the negative to remove the starter - so lots of effort saved and a good lesson on how tight these connections need to be.

POST 5Original post

I did this to, I followed infrasilvers post, https://911uk.com/porsche/anyone-done-ignition-switch-updated-with-easy-diy.119042/page-2#post-1396294 Fairly straightforward, the OEM part is a VW part. I grabbed it from the local VW dealer to save time, from memory I think it was about 50 quid.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
