I'd really like to think that the 996 would indeed become a proper classic even if just for the fact it was the very first water cooled 911....

There is no limit and it’ll be a refreshing change from the 964 backdated generic style that are everywhere now - I love some of those cars, they’re gorgeous but it’s time to move on.

Rauh Welt have been using the 964 as a doner like Singer for years, but recently started working on the 993, 996 and 997.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is it time for the 996 to follow the 964?
I was talking to some guys in the States and they reckon the 996 is starting to take off there, prices are rising, although we all agreed that generally prices are down everywhere in this market, but the 996 seems like it's holding it's own and even showing promise of rising more, whilst others are falling.
This didn't sell, but it had a six figure estimate.

That's really nice love the colour as well, when you look at cars like that it's easy to see the 996 will be the next modded 911 and become more desirable i think the .1 may make the jump first though.
To be fair that's not just any 996 . Loads of modded 996's over in the states and Japan where they embrace the car culture. UK seems different but very much depends on the marque. Subaru's and Nissan just 2 examples. Over here sadly if you " mod " a Porsche it's seen as spoiling the brand. I've slowly started personalising my 996 and I've no doubt that the "purists" would offer their 2p worth should I overstep the mark. I'd really like to think that the 996 would indeed become a proper classic even if just for the fact it was the very first water cooled 911.... time will tell and once the cheap, unloved ones have perished...the decent ones will become collectibles.
Singer will soon be snapping them up as donor cars for their new design 911.
996 is a fabulous car to work on and the knowledge and info knocking about beats most other cars. I've been working on the birds mini one cab this week and finding info out about simple stuff has been a mare. As for mods, there's so many little tweeks and changes you can make to them that don't even cost money and mostly go un-noticed, but for me have made the car so special.
Most Porsche lovers get so hooked up on the looks, when in reality, the best thing about these cars is the handling and performance, and with the 996, the realisation of what a top raw sports car they are is starting to get through to folk.
I’m like a stuck record on it but I think once all the knackered ones have gone to the scrappers they’ll start to climb and if ever Singer did start to use them then they’ll go stratospheric, imagine a GT1 styled Singer with those headlights!
As I said, there is plenty of talk stateside and in the Middle East about the next modern classic to explode being the 996. MLR have US cars in the queue waiting to be done.
Rauh Welt have been using the 964 as a doner like Singer for years, but recently started working on the 993, 996 and 997. This is a sign that these cars are going to become collectable.
I think the 996 is particularly perfect for custom builds, huge parts choices, loads of donor cars and parts, an easy 400bhp, excellent reliability once the liners are done, and it looks like no other 911, it’s unique, that front end is never to be repeated - it’s just unfortunate that they nicked it for the Boxster
There is no limit and it’ll be a refreshing change from the 964 backdated generic style that are everywhere now - I love some of those cars, they’re gorgeous but it’s time to move on.
Le Mans and GT1 style builds but with Sterrato style ride height for nasty UK roads
become popular maybe but pricing.... too many produced 175,000 996 sold so will be 'cheap' for a long time to come. that's what brings people in to start with, that's how i got mine. 10k for a 911 yes please..... I may have spent 20k over the last 5 years on it but that's another story
I think opinions are changing. When I got mine it was still seen as the cheap one to get. Mates where still complaining about the headlights… because the boxter had them… but who cares! I think these cars look amazing. Lights included! In the last couple of years I’ve noticed more people giving it compliments. One guy knocking on the window when I was parked up, just to says it’s a beautiful car!
And like others have said they drive so well. The feel of them is incredible. What’s not to love! I think we are very lucky to be able to have cars like these. So I’m not surprised companies are starting to work on them, reimagine them.
Classic, definitely!
As others have said, there are simply too many of them around for scarcity to drive up prices. I think you might see sought after ones increase slightly (early manual 996.1 aero kit cars, manual C4S, manual Turbos), but they're always going to be the cheapest 911. And Tiptronic cabriolets will always be the cheapest 996!
It won’t happen overnight, or even in a decade, but there are examples that demonstrate it’s very possible, I just read on Google that Ford made about 1.5m MK2 Escorts in just under six years, but now there are so few of those 1.5m left that prices 45yrs later are significantly higher than most people would have guessed at.
Fewer numbers make it happen quicker.
I’m willing to bet that you’d have laughed me out of the room fifteen or so years ago for saying that by 2025 JZM would be advertising a 964 C2 Tip Cabriolet for £90k, but yet there it is….
It might take another decade or even two, but the 996 will eventually stand out because it’s different than every other 911 and it’s also a very good car to drive. The car itself has got every ingredient going for it to propel it upwards when all the rough ones have died and been scrapped.
And on top of what the car has to offer, the stage is also set to create the perfect storm, macroeconomic factors, high costs of parts, high tax, high cost of loans, etc.
We’re going to have a few more rough years so a lot more of them are going to be considered not economical to repair, that will thin out the stock and then all of a sudden JZM will have them advertised at £90k and there will be plenty of people wishing that they’d picked one up when they were cheap.
