SrWilliams has the first official set from us and I don’t even have a set here to photograph right now let alone put on the car we have used for the new tooling.

I had a set of side vents from another supplier prior to fluid987 and one of theirs was a 2 piece job,the other used wires molded into the part that you would bend that didn't work very well, but the 2 piece part on the passenger side worked really well, it was the driver's side that was an issue.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am so impressed. Ordered some custom side vents from Precision Design Plastics, one of the sponsors of this site (or at least a forum member) and I just received them today and I am blown way by the quality of the craftsmanship. Superbly done. The finish is spectacular to the point you will not have to be wasting a bunch of time prepping them and getting them ready for paint (that is if you do not order them painted).
I had seen these side vents in earlier posts (2009 & 2010) and the guy who was previously making them went out of business. I absolutely loved the look of the vents because they flowed so beautifully with the contours of the
Cayman
. I talked to Dave Sodergram who owns Precision Design Plastics and he told me he would begin making the vents because there was a heavy demand for them. I doubted if his company could produce them. But he surprised me and the ones I purchased from him exceeded my expectations.
I asked that he not paint mine but to simply finish them in black because I will be having the outside of the vents painted pearl white the color of my car while the insides will be hydro-dipped in a fiberglass coating.
I tried to provide some pictures but I am not good at that. Perhaps Dave will come on this forum and provide some better pictures.
I just wanted to alert everyone as to the availability of a great new enhancement.
SrWilliams
I was not pleased with the pictures I took, as I did not believe they really showed why I fell so in love with these side vents having reviewed pictures of them in 2009 and 2010 posts to this forum. SO, I went back and did a search and got some pictures of the vents finished and painted and installed on members' cars. This way you can really see the beauty of how the vents flow with the contours of the
Cayman
and do not obtrusively stick out.
And no, I am not affiliated with the manufacturers of the vents and I personally paid full price for my pair (to my dismay!). But like they say you get what ou pay for and I certainly did.
Again thanks Dave if you are out there
SirWilliams
Thanks for the post SrWilliams and I'm glad you're happy with the quality.
The project took longer to get ready then hoped but we wanted the mounting to work correct and utilize the OEM mounting inside which required more tooling. I am excited to see photos once installed on your car. I don't have any photos myself other then a few when we test fit your set in the car we have here. I will take a look and post some if they look OK.
Thanks,
Dave
Dave,
If owners have a prior pair of side vents from the prior manufacturer, can they be converted to your mounting system if people sent them to you? Just curious since at high speeds mine still move around a little and I'd like a better mounting system if possible.

Ken,
While the tooling/molds are unchanged as far as the visible portion goes the mounting is significantly different. This difference includes 2 additional pieces on the backside of the Vents that match up with the new replacement Air Ducts. The Air Ducts utilize the 4 OEM mounting holes in the body so there are no holes to drill, springs or cables like the previous seller used. I did consider whether we or the owner could retrofit the previous seller’s parts but it seems complex for alignment plus a slight re-trimming inside the opening is required.
I know you are very familiar with how the previous sellers units installed and here is the basic difference. Our set has 2 pieces for each side (Side Vent and Air Duct) plus all hardware. Each Air Duct uses 4 plastic retainer pins in the OEM holes. The screen is attached to the Air Duct. The Vent is aligned at the bottom with a pin into a grommet and once slid down the top of the Side Vent moves in and uses 2 machine screws to secure to the Air Duct.
To answer you question with a yes or no I would say no. Mainly unfeasible because the new pieces are done while in the mold or fixture. If a part has been painted (not including removing trim and screen) chances are it will not fit correctly due to thickness changes and could scratch the finish and requiring a repaint.
I will consider some different fixtures for this modification though.

Here is a link to a now closed thread showing the Side Vents. SrWilliams has the first official set from us and I don’t even have a set here to photograph right now let alone put on the car we have used for the new tooling.

This is a huge thread so I would start looking on or after page 30.
Best to PM or email direct for prices and availability.
Thanks,

Dave,
If you can send me some pictures of the new parts and how the 2 pieces go together and mount then I can see if I can figure out something that will work for the original pieces and let you know what I come up with. I had a set of side vents from another supplier prior to fluid987 and one of theirs was a 2 piece job,the other used wires molded into the part that you would bend that didn't work very well, but the 2 piece part on the passenger side worked really well, it was the driver's side that was an issue. BTW will answer another question in this topic for you if you don't mind.
Thanks,
Ken
Because even if the whole thing were open, it wouldn't matter as the "hole" that goes into the body for either the air intake (drivers side) or cooling fan (passenger side) is only so big, and is roughly the same size as the opening in these scoops that match up. If you were familiar with taking the factory pieces off and what is behind you'd understand why they are designed this way, a bigger opening would only let air in between metal body panels and in fact would technically cause unwanted drag on the car...
Ken,
Thanks for elaborating on the part and opening design with regards to the internal area (hole) of the intakes.
I will send photos of all the new pieces and how they fit. We are putting another set together this week and finalizing some of the new tooling. Adapting the mounting system for your set is certainly something you are capable of. There will be one special fixture required to locate the lower mounting point which I will work on as we finish the set in process. I will take photos of the differences as we go.
Thanks,
Dave
Any updates on these? I'd like to acquire a set, for use on a dedicated track car. (So they need to be secure!) Anything I should do other than wait for an update?

Difool,
I just sent a PM with more details.
They are ready now in polished black or for painting with two unaccounted sets in progress right now. We plan to start selling the carbon fiber versions in July. The mounting is completely different and they will not move around.
Ken,
I plan on taking more photos on Monday and will send those to you so we can talk more about retrofitting the previous seller’s parts on your car.
Dave
This whole thread has me confused...no product pictures, no link to website, private emails back and forth detailing product. What gives, why all the secrecy and confusion?
I certainly have no intent to create what could be considered secrecy or confusion here. As this post was started by SrWilliams I feel my replies here are to answer or provide input to his thread or others who reply.
While I was not planning to talk about this I will give a brief synopsis of the Side Vents we are now just selling. We are the third company to manufacture and sell these on Planet 9. The previous seller sold these here possibly as early as 2011 through 2015 and they were well received other than mounting. After taking over the project we completely redesigned the mounting before selling. SrWilliams is the first to buy a set from us and we haven’t taken any photos other than for mounting therefore there are no photos to show yet. Even the car used for this project does not have a set but very close.
Here is a now closed thread with many photos. One visual difference is our part no longer has the neoprene trim around the outside.

We do not have a website and will use Planet 9 as our main sales outlet for now. It’s a great site with enthusiasts who we feel are aligned with products we wish to build.
The private messages are more for providing options, costs and answering specific questions asked. We are selling these in four basic finish choices; black or gray for custom painting, polished black, and two carbon fiber weave options. In addition to these options custom painting is available. The four basic options run between $500.00 and $995.00 (subject to change).
