Leading evidence: 'Install when i got her' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pressures regularly (automatic pump recommendations gladly received!!)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
and the N rates tyre isnt like a normal tyre so is able (supposed) to manage temp changes better

not to worry a classic case of incorrect alignment even tiny camber changes can have an effect
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All - I'd appreciate your advice...I've just read the recent thread about 4 wheel alignments with interest as I am experiencing similar problems with on my '99 C4. However it's the
outside
of the tyre that has worn unevenly?!
I became a Porsche owner in July and since then I've done about 10k (mostly motorway) miles. The tyres were newly fitted when I got her from Nick Whale Sportscars near Birmingham
About 2k miles ago I noticed that the outside tread on the rear off-side tyre had all but worn away. The other tyres seemed to have worn evenly and still look virtually new - should I be overly concerned that it's the outside that has worn?
I've got a good quote (£145 incl VAT & fitting) for a new tyre (Pirelli 265/35 18 N3) from a tyre centre (Pit Stop) in Congleton, near Crewe where I work. The guy has suggested that I also get a 4 wheel re-alignment at a place up the road called 'Daytona Motorsport'. Cost will be £25 for an inspection & £25/hr for any adjustments needed. Daytona's owner seemed to know his stuff when we spoke, although he was quite suprised when I said the wear was on the outside of the tyre...
Has anyone else had similar problems so I can appear 'to know my stuff' when I take her in next Wednesday? What could be causing it? Any other thoughts or comments will be much appreciated
Thanks in advance, Rich

911 requires special tools to do properly, normall aligment would cost circa £150 IIRC
worth taking it to an OPC ? OPC Nottingham
on a 911 the aligment is one of the most important features !

Sounds like the alignment is way out. Should get it done before ruining another set of tyres.
Proper 4 wheels alignment should cost @£200 and should be done by someone who knows about 911 with multilink rear suspension with kinematic toe, don't let anyone else touch it!

Thanks guys - I asked OPC Notts and they quoted £125 (incl) for a wheel alignment that would be completed by a third party company. I am a little suspicious of this guy at 'Daytona' because of the low cost, although he says he has the factory settings that he would get the car running well again, or would be able to spot if there was anything else wrong. Says he done Porsche's before, although he does seem rather cheap...

£125 is good value, worth getting it done annually but no more than every 2 years !
ring any garage and they'll say
oh yea we have done loads of 911's had one in today !

Nearside rear is more normal, from leaning on it round roundabouts.
Offside rear outside edge would most likely be an alignment issue, unless you have some fast slip roads onto motorways with an abrasive surface (I have a few and do see some wear on the outside edge).
Quite a lot of the weight with 911's, and turbos in particular, is on the rear wheels, and the tyres have to work quite hard if you are enthusiastic.
Tyre pressures at the rear are quite important.

If they are under inflated they will flex more.
Instead of the load being spread across the tyre, more will be taken by the shoulder when cornering.
If you corner gently, then under inflation will wear the edges from regular driving, but if you drive harder the outside edge will wear more.

arent the rears recommended at 44 ? or am I thinking 993 18's ?
although 41 isnt that much under..... although the tyre question was a Pirelli ?

You're right, the tyre pressure should be 44 at the rear - I reduced them to 41 when the weather started to get a bit wet. I bought her at the end of July and didn't check the pressure until about mid-Sept (oops!) and it had dropped to about 36 in both of the rears (and a few psi in the front). I now check the pressures regularly (automatic pump recommendations gladly received!!)

that would do it ! that's quite a bit of underflation
note in tyres pressures and this is where Porsche rated tyres are different...
dropping the pressure in the cold doesnt always work in N rated tyres, as the tyres are subject to colder temps and thus struggles to heat up so in effect you're less likely to get them up to temp, so a reduced rounding effect happens anyway........ and the N rates tyre isnt like a normal tyre so is able (supposed) to manage temp changes better
