It seems as though the shifter is identical to the Boxsters. Not the gearbox...just the actual knob and bag. Has anyone removed the shifter hat to see how long the shaft is under it? And..has anyone replaced the OEM with an aftermarket either on a
boxster
or the
cayman s
? It would be nice to lower the profile of the shifter imo and i am ready to do it yesterday...thanks.
See the article I posted on the console swap in the articles section about the shifter and knob.
Not the nicest looking Knob IMO
Yeah, i read through it a few days ago..great write up. I am seriously considering a center console in gaurds red. But it doesn't look like you were ever able to get it off....any ideas why? My audi was a peice of cake. I am tempted to go out and pull up the boot and try the 90 degree trick, but if you tried it and it didnt work, whats the point.
According to my local dealership mechanic some knobs come right off after the 90 degree turn, others they need a pry bar to get off. I have a feeling mine is a pry bar example, but at least you can see how to check yours.
Hey Guys,
The knobs are pretty easy to remove. I can post some pictures if you're still trying to figure it out.

videodoctor....please do!!
Yes please post since my dealership told me that with the 90 degree turn many of them pull right off, others need a prybar. Mine did not just pull right off with a 90 degree turn.
I hope this works right. I think I have a number of duplicate images on your server now. Can't seem to get to them to delete. Sorry.
I hope this helps. I installed the EVO shifter on my 05
Boxster
and will do the same, with some modifications, on the
Cayman
. The stock shifter is a little shorter on the
Cayman
than on the
Boxster
.

Remove cap. Careful not to damage the leather
Remove the two Torx screws.
Pull knob off. It will be tight!
Twist collar. There are a couple of detents. One only one will work.
Pull collar down.
Pull knob off. It will be tight!
All done!
Great work, explains why the knob didn't come off as I still has screws in mine! Ugh, guy at the dealership should have told me that, maybe he assumed I had already done it. This should be posted in the Articles section as well and I will edit my article to reference yours once it goes up. Should make console installations a LOT easier. Speaking of the Evo shifter, did you have to take your console out for that or could you access everything with the console still in?
Glad to help. Feel free to use it any way you like.
You have to remove EVERYTHING to install the EVO shifter. You also have to modify the cage that holds the shifter, because the tip hits it in reverse. It also rubs on the carpet below. I think it makes it too 'notchy' as well. I will be shortening the extension a little. Taking .5' off should do the job. I'll take some pictures when I get a chance to do the install.
And by the way, great to have a site for the
Cayman
!
